My mum and I stayed one night at the Fairmont St Andrews last weekend, in a comfortable twin room (2 double beds). The hotel is fantastic - well maintained, with a superb view over the sea. It is a little bit of a drive out of St Andrews, but this didn't bother us as we had a car, and weren't bothered about going out at night. If you want to go in to St Andrews for an evening meal, I understand the hotel will organise complementary mini-bus.
We spent some time in the pool/spa area. The pool is a good size, and there is also a steam room and sauna. All staff were very pleasant and helpful. We particularly enjoyed the breakfast which is good quality and there is lots of choice!
We stayed at the end of half term, so the hotel was very full. However, we never got a sense of it being too busy - they even put on complementary valet parking to ease the car park congestion which was a nice touch, and the staff were great. Overall, fab weekend and recommend this hotel!

Having just returned from a 2 night break over valentines we were very disappointed by the service provided at this hotel. Having travelled extensively we were keen to experience some comforts nearer home but were disappointed by what the hotel had to offer. Firstly we were amazed that a hotel of this calibre had a charge for wifi and not even a free communal wifi area. The room itself was fine if not in any way special and stiflingly hot! The food at the restaurant (squire) was distinctly average, my wife's seafood chowder in particular was embarrassingly poor. We used the spa facilities the second day and whilst the massages were good they were very priced for what was provided (£95 for hot stone massage). The pool facilities were okay but again nothing special (the pictures make it look better than is the case). On the second night we tried to change our booking to a different restaurant but were informed this was not open - back to the squire it was. Breakfast buffet was good but when my wife ordered off the menu we were surprised to receive a bill despite what she ordered being cheaper than the free buffet - go figure?

This hotel is nicely located but is very large, impersonal and looks to charge you for facilities that in our experience are usually provided at '5star' hotels. We will return to st.andrews as it's a golfers paradise and a nice short break venue we will look to stay elsewhere next time. We stayed at the ruffles previously and would happily recommend that hotel.

Thank you for choosing to stay with us at Fairmont St Andrews and for taking the time to share your feedback. We are always happy to receive feedback and work diligently to ensure our service is of the highest standard.

We are disappointed the dining experience was not to your liking and have passed your comments to our Director of Food and Beverage.

I was also concerned to learn you found Wi-fi Internet connection was too expensive, our rates are comparable in size to other competitive hotels. However, visitors can sign up to the Fairmont Presidents Club. It provides various complimentary benefits, including internet usage. We are currently liaising with our Corporate Office to review internet charges. Hopefully these matters will be resolved in the very near future.

We constantly strive to improve our facilities, achieve and maintain the highest standards at Fairmont St Andrews. As a result we are performing essential maintenance work to our Spa facilities and swimming pool in March 2012.

We believe the breadth, range and quality of our facilities provide an unsurpassed choice of first class experiences for our visitors. Your feedback enables us to continually review and maintain our range of services. Please accept our grateful thanks.

We look forward to welcoming you back to Fairmont St Andrews in the very near future.

We stayed at this hotel for 1 night as part of their Sunday night spa package. My friend raves about this place so I had high expectations, having had great spa breaks at other hotels.

We arrived early therefore didn't expect our room to be ready and would have lunch first. We ate in the Rock & Spindle which was very enjoyable. Our waitress, Leni, was most helpful and friendly. As we had mentioned in conversation that we were there to celebrate a birthday, she arrived with a plate of petit fours, compliments of the chef. This was a very nice touch and much appreciated. We were pleased to find our room ready after lunch. We had booked a Studio Suite. Whilst we were very happy with the room, I wouldn't say there was much "suite" about it. It was simply a larger version of the standard rooms. For 3 ladies for one night it was more than ample, but Studio Suite could indicate some form of seating/table area, which there was none (aside from the usual writing desk). Therefore I'd suggest this type of room could be called an Executive Room or something else to avoid any misconceptions. The room was well furnished, spotlessly clean and very comfortable. We enjoyed the spa treatments, although I did prefer the manicure at Carnoustie, but this is just a personal preference, no reflection on the treatments offered here. We again dined in the Rock & Spindle for dinner, preferring to dine casually. Again, the food was enjoyable except the banoffee pie cheesecake, which all 3 of us felt was not particularly tasty (was more like a blamange than a cheesecake consistency). We mentioned this to the waiter who took this off the bill, so a satisfactory outcome.

The breakfast is fantastic, if you can't be pleased with the breakfast on offer here then you cannot be pleased anywhere! The hotel was particularly busy being half term school holidays therefore there was a bit of a wait to be seated for breakfast. But all staff were working hard to turn around the tables and extremely pleasant despite being so busy, so full marks for their efforts.

As others have pointed out, this hotel is just massive, and it could be easy for such a large place to lose their touch on service. But I have to say that every member of staff we encountered were first class. Despite how busy they were at times, nothing was too much trouble. Even asking a member of staff who was moving some furniture about where the nearest toilets were, he immediately stopped and showed me directly to the nearest toilet, rather than just pointing in the general direction.

Many thanks to everyone at the Fairmont for a fantastic stay. This was my first visit here and I certainly hope it won't be my last.
