Old Course Hotel, Golf Resort & Spa
Ranked #1 of 17 Hotels in St. Andrews
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed January 17, 2013

We stayed one night in January 2013. It is a lovely hotel with great service and a wonderful Spa. The view from the Road Hole Restaurant over the 17th hole of the Old Course must be one of the great hotel views in the world. It is also just a short walk to the historic town of St Andrews and the lovely sandy beach but wrap up well!

Room Tip: If you are willing to pay extra choose a room overlooking the golf course.

Can I live here?

The old course is a great hotel and will make memories that last. The hotel is situated next to a famous golf course which provides relaxation for those who enjoy the game. From the bar located on the fourth floor you have a great view if you like to watch. The beach invites for a good walk. The city centre of St Andrews has a much celebrated Thai restaurant. But for the top cuisine you come to the right hotel. The breakfast is a party at it self and after two hours you should stop. Wonderful. The Road Hole restaurant has a menu worth a two Michelin star. The chocolate mouse will make you smile. The Sands grill restaurant situated on the ground floor is Brilliant to visit. Top of the bill grills and seafood. Dessert tip if you like chocolate: the sands rocky road.
The Eden rooms are luxury and relaxing. Nice big beds and a bath in which your whole family can sit. Pay attention when using the shower. read the instructions or wake up quickly. If you want a view than take the rooms on the front side with view to the sea and over the course.
The known fact to everybody who visits hotels is that the staff can make it or break it. Claire, Rachel, Elliot, the Cheffs, marc the concierge and Graeme are, with all the others the nicest asset of the hotel. Treat yourself on being spoiled and pampered. Can I live there?

From the minute you are welcomed to the Hotel, there is a feeling that you are somewhere really special !! The location, overlooking the "Old Course" is what certain golfers dream of, and they would not be disappointed. The memorabilia, photographs and history, are worth a visit, on its own. !!! The staff are brilliant, well trained and very professional. Our room was large, small balcony, excellent bathroom....all amenities included obviously !!! Nice muted colours, with a great bed and pillows !!! Could perhaps be improved by a "cable caddy" to restrain all the wires at the desk. The green flashing "wifi router" lights were also distracting, during the night..... The Spa was brilliant, great Thermal Suite, which was ideal for January. The hotel quickly became one of our all time favourites.

Room Tip: Make your choice of room a priority, then decide if you want to pay the price !!!

We booked a 1 night midweek stay at this hotel and both my wife and I enjoyed the whole experience. However, I’m afraid I have to add a "but" and this is room 115. I appreciate that we booked as part of a deal and was more than happy with this well-appointed Eden room apart from the view off the spa roof and at night, when trying to sleep the noise from the fans, which I assume are for the spa conditioning units. At midnight I called reception to enquire if this noise would stop and was told unfortunately, no. I asked if we could be moved and was offered a choice of 2 rooms one being across the corridor which we were moved into right away with no fuss. I must ask, why does the hotel use this room when it's not busy as I now know that there have been issue’s with this room before? With that out of the way, I would say ALL the staff were so attentive and helpful, we dined in the road hole restaurant on the tasting menu with the wines, which was excellent, as was breakfast such a wide and varied choice and the view's from here and the bar are great. We did use the offending spa which again was excellent. I will not let this small "but" put me off as I will be making plans to return for my retirement celebrations as our stay on the whole was superb.

Room Tip: Avoid room 115 if you are a light sleeper due to noise from roof fans

It has now become a tradition for us to have a couple of cocktails in the bar on New Year's Eve. It is always a treat with great service and great drinks. A brisk walk home for a great dinner. What more could you want!

We returned to the Old Course for our 5th Anniversary and we were treated like complete royalty.

Soon after we arrived in our suite which was amazing there was a knock at the door, room service brought us two glasses of champagne!

The suite was huge, living area with a TV, Massive bed with TV and a huge bathroom with sunken bath (enough for a small family ha ha) and large walk in shower!

We decided to walk into town and browse some of the 30 odd pubs and bars....ST andrews itself is so much bigger than I realised! After a few hours of cocktails and browsing the shops we returned for our dinner reservation.

We booked into the Sands Grill, we'd been there before and knew the quality of food and service was great. We were seated in a booth and immediately given a glass of Laurent Perrier Champagne each and wished the best and congratulations. Our server was amazing(just in the sands for 1 night, he usually worked in the Dukes), he really gave us a dedicated service, even got me a set of earplugs so I would get a good nights sleep (my other half is a snorer!). I dined on the SEafood platter then had a fillet steak followed by creme brulee. The other half had garlic bread, fillet too. It was simply delicious!

We then went for a walk through the hall of champions (again) it is lovely and full of history, it also helped us settle after the lovely dinner.

On entering the room, there were rosepetals on the bed, a bath had been run and there were rose petals all round the bath. Just lovely! It made us really celebrate.

I had the best nights sleep for a long time, really comfy bed.

We had massages in the spa which were brilliant the Kohler Water experience was great, we then had our supper again in the sands grill.
Both Mornings we had breakfast delivered to the room which was great, very prompt service and delicious food on offer!

All in all this is an amazing resort and perfect for a relaxation get away!
ST Andres itself is a gem of a place with something for everyone - only 10 minutes from Dundee too which makes it so appealing!

We will definately be back

Room Tip: getting the view onto the old course is well worth the extra money....also the suite upgrade if you...

We booked a 1 night stay the night before we went, and chose the 50 shades of winter luxury package. From the moment we arrived to the minute we left, the service from the staff was amazing. The hotel itself is a fantastic 5 star and you can tell from the decor, staff and facilities.
We had a eden room and couldnt fault it - loved the space and the huge deep bathtub!
As part of the package we had lunch included at the Jigger Inn - amazing food and service, a great place to spend a few hours of the day.
We went to the bar in the evening which is on the 4th floor - gorgeous place to spend time in winding down after the day, and sooooo many different varieties of drink you can choose - the menu is a must to look at to see what selection they have.
Breakfast was in the restaurant on 4th floor so great views whilst enjoying your breakfast, a great selection and again the staff were brilliant.
We had a wonderful stay - wish it was for longer than 1 night!!
