“Best value in St. Andrews”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 14, 2008

St. Andrews is all about location - and the Russell has it. From our room (Room 5 again), you have a view of the sea and beach and the Jubilee course, but step into the bay window and you look left towards the R&A and the 1st and 18 holes on the Old Course.

We were a group of 15 (golfers and wives) and found the Russell a great combination of value and quality. THe rooms are very comfortable with king size beds and modern renovated bathrooms. Breakfast is excellent and cooked to order, while the continental breakfast is slightly limited. But you need a cooked power breakfast to get around the Old Course!!! We had dinner at the hotel on three of 4 nights as it offered an excellent selection, great prices and interesting specials - thats why it seemed to attract so many locals. You can walk around all the tourist sites and shopping from the hotel and there is free street parking outside.

Look forward to returning.

The Russell Hotel is in a brilliant position a few mins walk from the Old Course and very handy for the town for shops and evenings out.
We stayed in Room 5 for most of our stay, a large recently refurbished room and bathroom which was just right - with a large bay window with fantastic views!
Breakfast was also very good - the full Scottish could not be faulted.
Well positioned accommodation in St Andrews does tend to be more expensive, but we would recommend this hotel, so long as you get a large room facing the sea, for a special break.

The Russell Hotel in St. Andrews is an excellent hotel. Its location is top notch, looking out right into the Fife and only a minute's walk to the Old Course. The rooms are above average for a Scottish B@B and the staff is exceptional. They make you feel right at home. The restaurant in the bottom floor of the Russell was exceptoinal as well. You know its first rate when, in a tourist town like St. Andrews, locals fill the dining area every night. If your traveleing to St. Andrews this is the place to stay.

Everything was perfect. and what a wonderful time! When we travel, we usually stay at the “Ritz Carltons” of the world. That being said, we couldn’t image a better experience than the Russell. Very authentic and exactly what we were looking for in our first Scottish experience. The wind was blowing hard, and I shot a 72 the day before the Curtis Cup at The Old Course. What an experience!

Truly a pleasant and memorable stay. Gordon, the manager/owner, was on-site and hands down the best I have seen in years at treating customers right and making them feel welcome. It is instantly obvious how much he loves his job and interacting with people. He led his employees' hospitality and genuine concern for the patrons' enjoyment to set a standard that others can only strive to reach.
Can see the R&A Clubhouse and holes 1 and 18 from the front door and sidewalk tables. A 200 yard walk to the first tee of the Old Course, thru a park overlooking the bay and aquarium. Good food and bar service, reasonably priced. Room was older and small, but clean. Bed comfortable. Staff very helpful in obtaining information and assistance for activities.

  • Liked — The friendly, helpful, attentive staff.
  • Disliked — Room was small, but it was a last minute booking and only one available.

Wow, how to make the customer feel unwelcome. I love St. Andrews and this hotel has one of the best sites in the town (with the exception of the Old Course Hotel), but they really need to brush up on their customer service.

The bar staff are more concerned with counting the contents of the till rather than serve the customers.

"Sorry sir" appears to be the catch phrase as they smile and tell you the kitchen closed 5 minutes ago or they are not allowed serve you a drink in the run up to closing time - even a problem for residents which I have never encountered anywhere before.

The owner is no better and seems to advocate this ethos. It seems to me that they can be relatively successful without trying to please the customer and hence appear to take delight in telling you what you can't have. As said - Forget the customer!!!

If you subscribe to the American way of customer service then stay in the US don't come here.

I've just returned from a wonderful trip to St. Andrews and was so happy with my hotel choice. The Russell is a 5-minute walk from The Old Course and overlooks St. Andrews Bay. Each morning we awoke to a spectacular view of the Bay and the Links. The rooms were charming and the beds were very comfortable. The hotel has an excellent restaurant and bar and serves a delicious hot breakfast every morning. But it was the friendly staff and personal service that made our stay at this hotel so special. Gordon went out of his way to see that we enjoyed our holiday. I recommend it highly.
