Owner description: St Andrews Castle is the ruins of the castle of the Archbishops of St Andrews, dating in part from the 13th century. On a headland to the north of St Andrews stand the ruins of the city's castle, the main residence of the bishops and archbishops of St Andrews and the focal point of the church in medieval Scotland. Explore the underground 16th-century siege mine and counter-mine, and the 'bottle dungeon', one of the most infamous castle prisons in medieval Britain, which was cut out of the solid rock. John Knox and George Wishart may have been imprisoned in this dank and airless space, and this is where its believed Cardinal Beaton’s body was kept when he was murdered in 1546. Interesting history regarding the church reformation in Scotland. Within walking distance of the downtown area and most hotel locations. You will also get to stroll along St. Andrews University on your way there. A must see on your visit to St. Andrews.

We had a great time at the castle. The visitor centre is very interesting with lots of life size models that make for some funny photos, (I have some great ones with my kids and an axe-wielding executioner!!) but the castle itself is excellent. Lots of places for children to climb/jump/explore/imagine....and some exceptional views along the coast. If your camera has a panoramic photo function then use it when you visit this magical place.

Visitor centre also has a great wee shop to buy your mementos. Lovely staff in the centre too.

PS - unless it's the height of summer, wrap up really warm. The wind can be biting!!

Played the Castle Course the next day after playing the Old Course in really tough conditions with 52 degrees, 40 mph winds, and scattered rain showers. The course is really challenging with very difficult greens. Shot 75 and played as well as I could play!

Very scenic after seeing the Cathedral. We did not enter, but got some great pictures from the street, with the ocean in the background, and thistle in the foreground.
