“Quality country hotel close to St.Andrews”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 22, 2013

The hotel is clean, stylish in a modern country house way and has a lovely relaxed atmosphere. Our room (a suite in the main house, room no.7) was large, well appointed with a separate seating area and with its own tv, fire and fridge. The bathroom was adequate with a shower over the bath and two sinks although it was beginning to look a little dated. The room overlooked the terrace and as it was hot while we were there, conversation and cigar / cigarette smoke wafted up through the open sash windows. Smokers should be allowed to smoke freely in the open air but I mention it as the tables on the terrace are directly below the windows and could cause problem to those who do not like smoking.
Breakfast was lovely, particularly the Finnan haddock with poached egg. The choice for dinner was limited but was fresh, imaginative and nicely served.
We found the staff to be friendly and efficient but did witness a lack of tolerance at breakfast towards foreign guests who did not fully understand the menu options available. There was rolling of eyes and sharp tones directed at guests which was out of character with the establishment.
The decor is very tasteful and high quality.
The location is a few miles out of St.Andrews with the hotel set in nicely kept grounds with ample car parking and storage for golf clubs, golf being the main attraction of the town.
If you are planning to play the Old Course and have not booked a round at the time of arrival, a 5:00am or earlier start is required to queue for the list for the day's spare places (the Starter arrives at 6:00am to prepare the list for the day) The hotel will pack a continental breakfast or you can return from your queuing mission to enjoy breakfast in the dining room once your name is on the list.
I would recommend the hotel. It is not cheap at over £300 a night (for a suite, which was a bedroom, bathroom and small sitting room) but is a very comfortable place to stay to enjoy the history and town of St.Andrews.

Room Tip: room 7 is a suite in the main room overlooking the terrace and gardens to the rear. There seemed to...

We took some friends to Rufflets for Sunday lunch to say thanks for letting us stay with them. We were hoping for something nice, but we got all that and much more. From the reception onwards, all of the staff were extremely friendly, but never familiar. The food was truly excellent and the range and quality of drinks available was superb.
We took a walk afterwards in the beautiful grounds and we WILL return!
All in all, a perfect lunch!

We are all pleased to read how much you enjoyed the Sunday lunch at the hotel.

This is one of our most popular services (and we recommend booking in advance) - and with such wonderful weather at the moment, it can be rounded-off with a stroll in the gardens.

Hope to see you again soon.

With my best regards,

Stephen Owen

My partner and I stopped off at Rufflets today for a light lunch and found a perfect escape from the busy town centre of St Andrews.

The Rufflets hotel is immaculately set out and the service from Angela enhanced our lunch time treat. The food was very well presented and so tasteful...our compliments to the kitchen team. We enjoyed sitting out on the patio area looking over the well maintained gardens.

We would highly recommend the hotel to anyone passing through or visiting St Andrews as it offers you the ideal space to relax after a busy day wondering through the centre, golfing or even visiting the Fife area.

We will be returning

Dear Jayme

Many thanks for the comments - and now (in November) it does seem a long time ago when our clients were able to sit out on the Terrace and enjoy the peace and tranquility of the gardens.

We are so close to the (busy) town of St Andrews, and know that we can offer that idyllic haven, and I am glad that you had such a good lunch (and Angela is a star!!).

Regards,

Stephen

We have stayed at this hotel twice on a dinner bed and breakfast basis ,lovely rooms and staff who are a credit to the hotel .. restaurant has fine food and wine and staff gave us plenty of attention for anything we needed.
Gardens are lovely ,plenty of choice in the bar the suite we were staying in (the turret room ) was fantastic ..Super nights stay cannot fault it at all . Very good base for st andrews and area
Relaxing first class hotel.
One little gripe to the manager -i agree with one of the earlier reviews -breakfast time ,needs a more staff as 2 girls serving a full restaurant makes for longer wait for customers and pressure on staff -but all in all my wife and i loved everything about this romantic traditional scottish hotel

Room Tip: Pay extra for the THE TURRET room -PRO GOLFERS Choose To Stay in this super room..also great view of...

Many thnaks for the feedback after your stay at Rufflets - and I am very much aware that the staff are a real credit to the hotel, and I am always grateful to have such a good team to work with.

Have noted the comment on the staffing levels at breakfast time - and we have been working on getting the balance right to safeguard this important part of the Rufflets experience.

Everything about Rufflets was superb. Although a last minute booking the room we had was perfect. The staff were lovely - so helpful and couldn't do enough for us. The food was of the highest quality and the service was terrific. We had a most relaxing two days in beautiful surroundings. We will certainly stay here again and would certainly recommend it.

very accommodating, great service, good food but like dining in a morgue :)....could lighten up a bit. Not to mean the food or service was lacking just didnt seem to be enjoying themselves. I guess that's European. We were a group of golfers and it was very lighthearted all week and the dining there seemed stuffy and formal. But overall a great stay and wouldn't hesitate to recommend to a friend. I have a pillow top mattress and it hurt my back as beds were very firm. I think that's the case everywhere because it was the same in 2 other locations we stayed that week.
