“A beautiful piece of design and a fantastic place to stay.”
Reviewed September 14, 2011 for a stay in August 2011

It was the name that did it. I'd spent hours browsing for a cottage and 'option paralysis' was starting to creep in when 'Bag End Cottage' called out to the old hippy in me. And the pictures showing the smart kitchen an the large bath!

Booking was very straightforward and all my advanced communication with the proprietor (Mark) business like but friendly. Mark sent us a very clear and useful set of booking-in info and directons well in advance and so come August, off we set.

When we arrived I was genuinely very impressed with the house. Set in a quiet hamlet in the rolling Fife countryside, it is quiet and rural without being isolated and just ten minutes in the car from Cupar which affords all the amenaties you'd need.

The house itself is fantastic; designed and self-built by Mark it's both functional and lovely. Clean and modern but warm and welcoming with obviously so much thought put into not just the structure, but the furnishing, the decoration and all the little details. Bags of style and quality everywhere.

The kitchen is lovely in itself but also has everything you could possibly need both for the enthusiastic gormet to the committed ready meal warmer-upper. The living areas were simple, clean, stylish and had everything you could need. Lots of stylish little touches too, but also plenty of good practical things. A great downstairs loo hidden away, a fine big cupboard room by the front door to store all your boots and coats (well stocked with games too) and a bright and airy dining room with a good sized table. The lounge is well stocked with DVDs and continues the design theme seen throughout the house.

Upstairs is every bit as good as downstairs - three good sized and quirky bedrooms; immaculate and well thought out with a great bathroom. A nice powerful shower with plenty of hot water and oh! The bath was wonderful. It's all so clean and lovely and comfortable. There's a great little laundry cupboard hidden away too with an amazing stock of everything, inuding beach towels and mats.

Mark was wonderfully friendy, helpful and enthusastic... and he left us to get on and enjoy things, but was there to elp when neeed. Nothing was too much trouble. He's a fountain of local knowledge and recommendations and has provided possibly the most comprehensive set of local information (in the dining room - perfect for post breakfast planning!) I've ever seen in any holiday cottage. There's also a section for vistors reccommendations which we found very useful.

Around and about; Fife is lovely and seems to have something for everyone; the coast is brilliant as is the countryside. The cottage is really central so nothing seems further than half an hour away; tons of historic sites, loads for the children to do, plenty of award winning beaches, fantastic food, great pubs and good restaurants. Communications are good too if you want to venture further afield with easy access to the motorway and a train station in Cupar.

We tacked our weeks' stay onto the end of a friends' wedding and I can honesty say that even two weeks wouldn't have been enough. The house is amazing ad Fife is grand.

I liked it. A lot.

We have stayed at many self catering places ourselves over the years and hate when things are not provided, so we are very happy when so many of our guests seem to find everything and more that they need to have the best possible time at Bag End. Hope to see you again in 2012.
