Owner description: The Duke's, owned and managed by the Old Course Hotel, is a lush, heathland golf course perched on the hillside just a few minutes from the hotel. Noted in Golf World's Top 100 Courses in the Scotland, this championship 18-hole course has magnificent greens, beautiful fairways, a fleet of electric golf buggies and five tees on every hole, making it most appealing to golfers of all abilities. Don't forget to visit The Duke's Clubhouse, a popular and relaxed dining venue with stunning views of St Andrews and beyond. The award-winning Duke’s Clubhouse offers a hearty selection of traditional food to warm the cockles of any weary golfer’s heart - tune in to the post-golfing analysis over a pint of beer or head on to the deck and catch a few rays of sun with a gin and tonic in hand.

Perhaps I expected too much since Mr Kohler took over the Duke's (having been blown away by American Club visits in Wisconsin since it opened in the 80s.) Views are great. The course is fine. But the course conditions left a lot to be desired, especially given the world class competition from Crail, St Andrews Links, Kingsbarns, etc. Pathways between green and tee were outright muddy when other area courses were fine. Lots of traps that should have been GUR--washed out and unplayable. The halfway house was closed by 4pm. Kitchen was closed at 6pm on Sunday afternoon. Lovely clubhouse but not much available except a drink. Overall, was expecting a better experience.

Took a Golf Lesson at the Duke's Club. Amazing Views, Beautiful Club, Great Pro Shop. The golf pro gave me practical advise that I was able to put into my game right away.

Disappointed that at 5.40pm on a Saturday the halfway house was closed so no refreshments could be bought for the back 9. Also when finishing just before 8pm the restaurant was no longer open which 8 of us would have been happy to use.

Other than these minor grumbles the course itself was very good and challenging without being overly long for a mixture of low to mid handicappers. A buggy may have been useful though as there is a fair bit of walking from the greens to next tees throughout the course. It benefits from a choice of 5 tees so caters for all levels of ability and the greens were running fast and very smoothly from first to last. All in all a great day out, pity they didnt want us to spend more money with them, but the bars of St Andrews benefitted instead!!
