“A Perfect Weekend”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 17, 2012

We would like to say a big thank you to all the staff at the new inn, first class meals, the host John Marini had plenty of golf talk about the time Tom Watson had Fish & Chips at the new inn, we even stayed at the farmhouse where tom was. The menu was excellent very good balance.
Very good size of potions, plenty of sweets to choose from, Sticky Toffee, very tasty.
We found the locals very friendly.
Can't wait to go back to try John's special fish & Chips, hoping he might put mushy peas with the fish & chips on the menu

10 / 10 well done.

Enjoyed a perfectly satisfactory pub lunch at the New Inn. Classic menu included good soup, prawn cocktail and pate starters; scampi & chips, etc for main course. A good deal is two courses for a fiver. Friendly chef/barman. Lots of stares from the regulars propping up the bar for a lunchtime pint - made us feel we looked like aliens from another planet!

I stayed at the "The New Inn" with 2 of my friends last week on our first trip to St Andrews and it's a very nice place to stay :). The staff was very friendly and attentive and the rooms were wonderfull. We eated there for dinner and the next day for breakfast and the 2 meals were excellent. We were to early for check in and so our rooms weren't ready but we could let our baggage at the hotel. I forgott my glasses in the room and only saw it when I was bac in luxembourg. I sent them an e-mail and god a response very quickly.
I can just recommend this hotel :))

We have recently stayed at the The New Inn on our first trip to St Andrews for a family wedding and can honestly say it is a joyful place to stay.

On arrival at the Inn the staff were wonderfully attentive and friendly and we were in fact early for check in and the rooms were not quite ready. This was dealt with in a speedy and professional manner and they proceeded to get the rooms ready as quickly as they could and let us check in early. This was much appreciated as one of our party was over 80 years old and was travel weary!

The rooms are bright and spacious and have all the facilities you should need. WE had three rooms in total for our party and none of them was a disappointment.

The hearty breakfast was freshly cooked and of a very high standard. The bar staff and locals were all very friendly and made us very welcome.

My partner and I researched and then booked this " boutique hotel". It had been newly reburbished. Paul Daniels ( the magician) was obviously their web designer, and Aldridge Prior (the hopeless liar) their copy writer.

The web site advertises comfortable rooms. A warm and welcoming atmosphere, sea views, good food and live music in the bar.

We parked outside, right under the Tennents lager neon sign to the right and the Carlsberg lager sign to the left. We entered the bar, but only after the" lively locals" eventually stepped aside to allow us overnight paying guests entry with our overnight bags. We did this under a moss laden roof.

Our warm "welcome" was that of the local postman, and very obviously a local of the bar as he was absolutely steaming drunk. He assured us that the rooms were" first class" before he fell on the floor at our feet.

When the barmaid had finished pouring Tennents down the already refreshed "regular's" throats, we were shown to our room. Apparantly we had the top floor to ourselves. The twin attic room we were given had no wardrobe to hang even a jacket on, but we were given the single room opposite to use as this room also housed the shower-room and toilet. This room did have a rail and a few hangers to hang a thing on, albeit no lock. You had to run in your towel across the short corridor in case some wayward guests from down the short flight of stairs lost direction.

We hot-footed it out the side door and took a taxi straight to The Jigger for dinner. On our return, the "live music" was in full swing. The juke box was turned up to full volume and the even more drunk regulars were belting out" I wish it could be Xmas every day" - all this on the 4th of February.

Our "seaview" was somewhat spoiled by the housing estate that lay a few hundred yards away from the bottom of the "large" beer garden. The broken flower pots and over turned tables were nothing to the fag-butts and glasses left over from summer days gone by. Beyond the grey stoned, small, box-like houses you could just make out a stretch of sand, in front of the municipal car park .A veritable rainbow of lime green Ford Fiestas, canary yellow Fiats, and a solitary retired ice cream van.

Breakfast in the morning was a surprise. I persuaded my early rising partner to go and discover if breakfast indeed was for "real". It was, and the chef/proprietor gave him a tray to bring up to me in my attic room.

Nice people to be fair. They are trying their best but they are in the wrong category of (self assessed) accommodation. A local bar with rooms, better served for people looking for simple "digs".

If you arrive here, I suggest a "disappearing" act - right quick. Unless you are a joiner, painter or electrician that is. A good few jobs needing done for sure before they can call themselves a " boutique hotel".

Room Tip: Drive on!!! Beautiful b and b's in town centre of St Andrew's. Not suitable for tourists at...

Whilst we are extrememly disappointed that you did not enjoy your stay at The New Inn we believe your issues are with the fact that you believed you had booked a "boutique style " hotel.
We do not and have never classed our selfs as a boutique hotel and have examined our own web side, laterooms, booking.com and visitscotland and the word boutique is never mentioned once.
There fore I can empathise with your disappointment when you had discovered the error but do feel that you have taken out your error rather unfairly on our property. We would have welcomed the chance to discuss any issues or problems whilst you were at the propery but this opportunity was not afforded to us.

This was the worst dining experience of my life. Don't be fooled by the nice advertising signage welcoming you in from the Fife coastal path. This is a traditional drinking bar and not a family dining venue. The roast chicken lunch was a reheat in a burnt yorkshire pudding, the childrens sauasages were burnt and the baked beans were horrendous. The cook /chef when challenged was totally in denial of the apalling standard of food served. Neither my family or I would ever go back. This venue really disgraces St Andrews.

I am sorry to learn of your very disappointing meal and apologies for not responding sooner as for some reason I did not receive an alert for this. I am not going to offer excuses as it probably a bit late in the day for that but can assure we take very seriously your comments and ensure we up our game for future guests. If you are ever back in St Andrews I would like to invite you back for another try with our compliments so please contact us on heidiorr@btconnect.com so we can demonstrate that this is not our usual standard of service.

stayed in a twin room. the room was a bit on the small side but had everything in it and was kept very clean. bathroom was quite spacious and nicely furnished. breakfast was good and hearty. you can also order lunch or dinner at the bar during the day. no-nonsense food at no-nonsense price.

a nice 15-20 min walk to the campus and the town center. owner John and Heidi are very friendly and helpful. Would definitely come back. best bang for the buck.
