“Wedding Weekend”
Reviewed October 4, 2011

We attended a super wedding reception here this weekend. Function room was set up to a very high standard. The food for a large party was very good. The staff were helpful and friendly. Bedrooms very clean and smart. Breakfast very good.

Room Tip: Rooms facing roadway are noisy until midnight.

Well, until this evening we were fairly regular customers here - we live locally so have come many times for meals and drinks. Tonight we came as a party of 12 for a birthday dinner, which we had booked well in advance, only to be left waiting, waiting, waiting, first to place our orders, then for the food itself. An hour and a half to be exact, and when it did finally arrive it was mediocre to say the least, and in one case at least, inedible. The birthday boy was very disappointed, not to mention embarrassed that his nearest and dearest had such a dreadful dining experience. Needless to say it spoiled his birthday. The waitress did her best to apologise, and to her credit she heavily reduced the bill, but hardly the point! If you can't cope with a table of twelve on a Monday night then don't take the booking! Very, very disapointed and won't be going back :-(

Our stay at the hotel was fantastic. We were greeted by Sean, the owner, who arranged for assistance with our luggage. All of our needs were taken care of promptly and efficiently. The rooms were full of charm and character. The free hot breakfast was quite a good change from the usual pastries and cold cereal that we get in the U.S. We were easily allowed to change from one night to two nights stay. It was well worth the 45 minute drive(as the frightened U.S. tourist travels) from the airport to this beautiful village and its charming hotel.

Room Tip: All rooms have a view of the town square.

Judging by previous reviews, this hotel has obviously undergone a big change for the better recently. Stayed for one night on 28th May as we were attending a wedding reception in the hotel's function suite and we found this to be an excellent place to stay.

We arrived in the afternoon and were greeted by a nice, helpful man (might have been the manager, not sure) who checked us in and showed us to our room. The room was a good size, neat, tidy and clean. Everything we needed was in the room, including an iron & board, the usual coffee/tea making facilities and a large screen TV. The bed was very comfortable.

We unpacked and headed down to the bar/lounge/restaurant area for some 'refreshments' - this part of the hotel was very good and the bar/waiting staff we very helpful and curteous. The food seemed to be going down well with various guests and walk in patrons. Prices were reasonable and the food definitely smelled good. The seating is great too, including several tables with comfortable sofas to relax on. We had a great night at the wedding reception in the suite and retired to our room quite late. I can't comment on the sound proofing as we were both asleep as soon as our heads hit the pillows due to an evening of excess!

Next morning we headed back down to the restaurant/bar area for breakfast and again staff were very good. We had the full cooked breakfast which was excellent (and much needed).

Overall an excellent hotel, with great service and nice rooms. We'd certainly go back here if we need a place to stay in the Glenrothes/Markinch area again.

We arrived at the laurelbank hotel last weekend (21st may) for a wedding reception - on entering the hotel main entrance no signs to point you in the direction of reception which is in haigs bar - haigs bar area was very clean and tidy - wall mounted tvs which delighted the teenagers - also staff very helpful even asked our kids if we would like the internet access login in order our kids could use the internet on their electronic gadgets. Drinks were 50p cheaper than my local so very respectible prices. Our room was big enough for the four of us, the ensuite had plenty towels and shower gel etc. The room has wall mountred tv and tea + coffee making facilities, clean (no dust on surfaces) and bed linen was fresh. Had a great nights sleep as mattress was soft to firm.
On the down side the room could have done with a coat of paint to hide marks that have been there for sometime - on asking we were advised the refurb was ongoing and the rooms would be painted. Sorry can not advise on noise levels from other guests as we were tired after a long day.
The breakfast was a full scottish - excellent food - started with cereal, accompanied with tea, coffee, fresh orange juice, and toast then tucked into the full scottish breakfast

This is the second time i have stayed in the Laurelbank - it is a far better hotel and under new management - the staff were very poloite and went out there way to ensure i was well looked after - when the refub is complete im sure the hotel will become a popular venue for travellers and parties alike
The hotel is only a 5 minute walk from the train station in markinch - the location is superb.

Well done to the management and staff - will def see you again.

No clear reception area.
You are left to fend for yourself. Staff do the bare minimum. No attempt to exceed your expectation.
Bed had no mattress cover or a sheet next to duvet. Just a badly fitted flat sheet.
Furniture and walls are damaged and a bit tatty despite recent refurbishment. Walls are incredibly thin. I doubt there is any soundproofing. You WILL hear your neighbours. Presumably the child created next door will be named after me.

Breakfast is pretty poor, scrambled egg is mainly made with milk or has sugar added.

When I complained about the nights disturbed sleep there was no proactive solution offered and there was no manager on site able to deal with it. The staff have no authority.
Its a £30 night hotel and they are charging £50 plus. I was offered £10 off. Whoopee.
This could be a lovely hotel with soundproofing, staff training, and Visit Scotland membership.

Room Tip: Book another hotel.
