A very interesting mechanical device, take the boat trip to appreciate the engineering. Great to see the two canals rejoined using modern technology.

“A technological wonder of the world!”
Reviewed December 5, 2012

Visiting this was my husband's choice on the recommendation of a (male) friend. I must admit that it wasn't high on my list of 'to see' attractions, as it's a bit like boys' toys, (husband would undoubtedly give it 5 stars, but I am looking at it from a general perspective!), but once there even I couldn't but be amazed by the whole construction. It is so clever, and the video explaining it all was well presented and clear, even to a technophobe like me. The Wheel connects two canals which are at very different levels, and rather than use a closely positioned and so time-consuming series of locks the Wheel takes barges between the two levels in a comparative instant. We went in a glass sided barge-shaped boat which went into the arm of the 'wheel' and then took us painlessly (and without any vertigo!) up to the higher level. Then we went along the top canal for a little way and then came back down on the Wheel again. Fascinating. The structure and construction was of real interest to husband, who spent ages outside looking at the works, whereas I escaped into the gift shop. We had lunch in the cafeteria which, whilst being a bit canteen like, has good lunchtime food at reasonable prices, (although unsurprisingly I wasn't tempted by the soup of the day, advertised on the chalk board as 'Leak [sic] and potato' !!)

“Brilliant engineering”

A good day out especially with kids. Well worth getting the bike out and make a day of it by riding allong the Canals, stopping off at some of the good Pubs and beer gardens on your way. There are many other attractions to check out in the surrounding area.

“"Brunel would also have been amazed with this" Amazing.”

We visited the Wheel in September 2012 whilst on holiday. I was really looking forward to seeing this wonder of the world (maybe in my eyes only) when i first saw it on one of the late great Fred Dibnah programmes, amazing or what. There is a good gift shop, the cafe looked good but we did not use it, plus outdoor vendors selling food. You can for a charge travel on the wheel, well worth the visit even from Yorkshire.
