I really enjoyed my recent short break in Edinburgh and though the eating and drinking places I enjoyed there were first rate the Mussel and Steak Bar stands head and shoulders above any restaurant in which I've dined anywhere this year (2013). Faultless!

Can't rate this restaurant more highly. The staff were lovely, food delicious and for a table of 5 - 2 bottles of wine, water, soft drinks, mains and puddings - £120 - really really good value!

My partner took me here for my birthday and we entered at the same time as an older couple, most likely tourists yet we were seated first. Initially we thought this was great yet we soon realised it was because the seat was in the worst location - right next to the toilet. Furthermore, the seats were bar stools which easily felt like they could tip over. It became clear they were holding out the good seating for their 'older guests' and gave the students the rubbish table. This was further emphasised by the lack of respect from the waiter who laughed at us when we just ordered water over wine - even though we could have easily afforded it yet i had no ID. He smiled and spoke to all the other tables since they were either families or older couples and checked to see that all their needs were met, yet ignored us the whole time failing to even to check our meal was okay, despite the restaurant being empty at this point. Moreover whilst cleaning he tried to avoid all eye contact with us and as a waiter myself i though his service was just pathetic. It seemed that this waiter had a chip on his shoulder about students being there for some reason even though we acted in a very mature manner which is more than i can say about the table next to us who were loud and very drunk!! The only reason i haven't rated this worse is because of the food. Wont be back!! Felt very unwelcome

My wife and I visited this restaurant in Aug 2012 and give it full marks. We returned to Edinburgh at the end of May as I was running the marathon. Since we enjoyed our experience so much last time we decided that we wanted to eat here again. Anticipating that the restaurant would be busy on the night we made a reservation the night before and specifically requested certain seating (where we sat last time).

After completing the marathon I was a little hungry and really looking forward to a nice juicy steak. We arrived at the restaurant on time only to find someone at the table we had requested. We would have been happy to wait a little while for them to finish but they had literally just been shown to the table and ordered. Clearly this was not the fault of the diners so we accepted seating upstairs, where it was very warm and quite cramped for space. I decided to opt for the 16oz rump steak, my wife went for surf and turf and my daughter opted for a children’s steak. All the meals were cooked really well, especially my steak that I ordered medium rare. I do find that chef’s sometimes air on the side of caution with medium rare and it can be more medium but not this time. My wife particularly enjoyed the mussels from her surf and turf and requested some bread to soak up the left over sauce. Unfortunately the bread never materialised and by the time we could attract someone’s attention the sauce had gone cold and lost its appeal. I was too tired to complain but my wife wasn’t. After she pointed out the fact that our seats had been given to someone else and the bread she ordered never arrived we were offered free desert. I was full so opted for coffee and my wife had a desert and a coffee; none of which we were charged for.

The food was still excellent, not only in quality but also in value for money. Perhaps we chose a bad day for customer service and attention. The free desert was an acceptable compromise but we would have preferred our table and bread. However, I am sure to return the next time I am in Edinburgh.

Table for two ,taken upstairs told to watch out for the champagne bucket on the stair that was collecting water from a leak in the ceiling , dumped at a table next to toilets .oh we'll I thought not to bad lets not complain and get on with the evening !
My wife and I ordered one kilo of mussels to share as usually that's plenty ,chips and also bread which buy the way is 1.95 for four slices .
Mussels arrived and bread but no chips . Opened the pot to find roughly 20 mussels at the bottom , not enough for one never mind sharing .Some where just shells with no meat at all! Asked the waiter if this was a kilo and was told yes it's all weighed before hand , but he kindly said he would bring another 1/2 kilo for us to compensate this was promptly dumped on the table by some other waiter along with the forgotten chips my wife said thank you to this gent three times and was totally ignored he just walked off ..Classy. The second pot of mussels was the same size as our first which was strange as it was 1/2 a kilo ...hhmmm.
Asked for bill which could,nt come quick enough and was left to find my wife's jacket (which they hung up earlier) myself.
Never again ,live in town and there is so much better on offer than this place, and much cheaper .
