We have always wanted to have a meal in this restaurant and have at last realised this ambition. The food was nothing out of the ordinary, I had the sea bass risotto and was rather underwhelmed. It was just lacking in flavour. Our shared starter of pork pate was lovely and the cheese platter was good, although overpriced. What lifts this establishment beyond the norm however is the surroundings, the stained glass windows are beautiful. The staff, a Malaysian guy and a young Bulgarian student, were exceptional. We will be back!

“Lovely decor disappointing food”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 9, 2013 via mobile

This is a gem in Edinburgh in architectural terms with lovely wood panelling. The good points are the environment and the service. The menu is enticing and should be good. Two of our party had risotto but this was a disappointment. The rice wasn't properly cooked. It just wasn't a risotto! On the other hand, the fillet steak was good-very good.
Looking around, there is a bit to be done in clearing up the place. There is a lot of dust about.

“Don´t miss!”

As soon as you walk through the door you know this will be great. The place is beautiful and packed with years and years of ambiance. Staff friendly and efficient - of course- and the food excactly what you want in a city so close to the sea. We had the seafood platter and enjoyed every morsel!

“Not your usual pub”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 2, 2013

This is a characterful pub/bar/restaurant (with decor not unlike the Philharmonic in Liverpool). This was a return visit, having had lunch there about 3 years previously and being mightily impressed with the huge central bar and the wall tiles. This time it’s a Friday night, just arrived in Edinburgh for a weekend visit, so we decided to have a drink here and eat in the bar. The atmosphere was great, full of jovial people ready to chat at the drop a hat. There was no room to sit and eat in the bar area, so tried the restaurant part which was also full but a table would be available in a bit …. so back to the bar for a drink while we waited. The staff were excellent, opened a tab for us and retrieved us after about 10 mins. I’m pretty certain our ‘down under’ waitress was there on our last visit, very on the ball (maybe she’s the boss now !?). Settled in with a bottle of wine, ordered food. We were entertained by the revolving door facing our table. People kept appearing presumably expecting to enter the bar, some twigged and kept revolving out again; others came in and stood like bunnies caught in headlights, looking all bewildered! Had a great night, great food, great staff. Highly recommended if a little pricey, bit then we did go for the fillet steak & venison. Do call in, even if it’s just to admire the bar and those fantastic historical wall tile displays.
