Description: Set in the heart of Edinburgh is Hanam's Kurdish and Middle Eastern Restaurant and if you think that's a mouthful, wait until you see what on offer! Voted one of Britain's Top 5 Middle Eastern Restaurants by the Telegraph, owner Ahmed ensures the personal touch, by being there seven days a week to offer advice and banter. The menu offers starters such as falafel and baba ghanoush, main courses that include Kurdish pizzas, vegetarian casseroles and halal meat dishes, such as Kurdish-style lamb biryani. There are also a selection of shish kebabs and desserts. Three courses from this banquet-like menu will cost an average of just £20 per person. And, if you're so inclined, you can even smoke a traditional hookah after your meal.

Wen to this lively open plan restaurant the week before Christmas and enjoyed a really nice well prepared meal. We shared a starter of dips and pitta and there was plenty of lovely flavours. I chose the lamb fillet kebab as a main with my wife opting for the biriani. Both meals were excellent choices. My only observation (hence the title of this review) was that because my kebab arrived directly from the charcoal grill the meat had had no opportunity to rest. The first mouthful was therefore a little tough as the meat was still a bit tight. Within a few minutes however the lamb had relaxed and the rest was delicious.
I cannot understand the reviews about the staff. They were great and if there is a time of the year when tempers could get a little frayed then Christmas would be that time.
Don't forget this is a 'dry' restaurant so bring your own or buy from the pub next door but one.
Remeber to tell them you are eating at Hanams and get a small discount.

Tried this place for the first time recently and thought it was great. Food was really delicious and it's got a nice cosy atmosphere. I recommend the falafel and the chick shawarma wrap. Will definitely be going back!

Been to Hanam's 3 times and loved it each time. Had both the Hot & cold Mushakal starters and they were both lovely. Also had the Kubba Halab which was equally as good. Naan bread is very light and different to the usual Indian Naan.

For mains we've had Chicken Biryani (quite different to the Indian version), Qozy Lamb & Chilli Gosht Kebab which were all delicious. The only slight disappointment was the Kebab refers to a fiery kick and whilst the chillies were noticeable I wouldn't refer to them as fiery, but everyone does have different views on the strength of chillies. We also had Shilah sauces each time and mainly stuck to the Qaysi as it is so good. I can't recall the other one we tried but reverted back to Qaysi as it wasn't so much to our taste.

For deserts we've tried Rosewater Sorbet, Mango Sorbet, Rose Ice Cream & Mahalbi and would recommend them all.

It should be noted that the food is about a blend of subtle flavours and not hot & spicy like a lot of Indian or Thai restaurants.

The restaurant operates a loyalty card which provides excellent value if you intend making more than one visit. With this in mind and the BYOB policy it is a quality yet good value restaurant.

Went to Hanams on a cold Edinburgh night. Restaurant was pleasantly warm in both temperature and its warming red decor.
Had the cold starter of "Mushakal Dips" (to share). All were delicious - very fresh. Naan was light and tasty.
For main course had the Mushakal Kebab consisting of 3 skewers of - minced lamb, chicken breast & cubed lamb. The minced lamb kebab was soft and tender as was the chicken kebab. Would have preferred the lamb kebab to be less well cooked as it was a little dry.
But overall tasty.
It's also BYOB with no corkage. So good prices.

We went back to Hanam's having been taken there by an Iraqi friend. Second time around it was just as good. Friendly with a family business feel, the food is great. The tastes and flavours are very subtle and it is a welcome change from what can often seem like similar styles in Edinburgh's many other restaurants.
Portions are generous so make sure you leave room for the dessert where the rose petal ice cream and sorbet are outstanding. Perhaps not the flashest of places, but if you want something different, and great value for money then head to Hanam's. Best to book since others seemed to have twigged.
