Dining options: Breakfast, Late Night, Dinner, Lunch, Delivery, Reservations
Dining style: Casual Elegant
Neighborhood: Old Town
Description: Close to the Royal Mile, La Garrigue is a low-key yet chic French restaurant in the buzzing heart of Edinburgh city centre. Smart hyacinth and white-panelled walls strike a stylishly understated tone, with simple wooden seating and bright windows offering views over Carlton Hill. Cuisine is similarly deceptively rustic, specialising in signature dishes from the rural Languedoc region of southern France heartened by deft modern cooking.

I hate over the top pretentious French restaurants and so was delighted to find this lovely rural style French restaurant - with a very relaxed atmosphere, good service and great food. A real gem!

“A Treasure”
Reviewed September 11, 2012

We had a fantastic lunch in this lovely restaurant. The service was second to none and the food delicious. So much so we have booked to eat again with the family this time. One could easily forget the restaurant is not in a lovely French town or village. Go on give it a try and you won't be disappointed.

“Lovely surprise!”
Reviewed September 9, 2012

We decided to leave the grandeur of The Balmoral and turned down a side street close by, it was actually rather seedy in the evening, Then we came across La Garrigue, the aromas pervading tickled ones taste buds and the interior looked most inviting ,so much so ,we simply had to enter. The decor was simple, with some bright paintings of French village life, the whole atmosphere was jolly, welcoming and all the clientele appeared happy, enjoying good food wine and each others company. We had a window table so could observe the hustle and bustle outside. My husband selected the grilled mackerel fillets and I enjoyed the twice baked souffle which was delicious, this was followed by grouse for me and my husband had a steak. We enjoyed a robust red wine which complimented an excellent, inexpensive meal.
We will certainly return when next in Edinburgh.

“Proper French cooking.”
Reviewed September 3, 2012

Simple decor, with imaginative, very tasty food, prepared with attention to detail. Unusual dishes, such as casseroled snails and duck gizzards, which was sublime despite sounding grim. Highly recommended.

“Fantastic Lunch”
Reviewed August 26, 2012

We decided to treat ourselves on our last lunchtime in Edinburgh this festival time and booked a table (which we got by the window looking out across to Calton hill). The set lunch was wonderful: we both went for the ham hock terrine which was delicious and really tasted of pork. I had the grilled mackerel filets which were lovely and fresh and my wife had the chicken breast on basil mash which was really rich and smooth. We both treated ourselves to pudding: I had the strawberries and the (homemade I think) aniseed ice cream and my wife the cheesecake and vanilla ice cream (again it seemed homemade). Only the cheesecake let the meal down being more like a French flan (which is maybe not surprising in a French restaurant) but not what was described. We accompanied our meal with a lovely 2009 Languedoc white wine (bags of flavour – not necessarily to every bodies taste). Will definitely be going back.
