Description: Up and coming chef Jason Gallagher has done a fine job in turning the former haunt of local 'celebrity' chef Juliet Lawrence Wilson into a luxurious showcase of his own exciting style of Modern European cuisine. The basement space really is a lovely little restaurant for a romantic meal or special occasion. Black-painted walls decorated with modern art work well with plush golden upholstered chairs, thick white table linen and fairy lights to create an especially intimate atmosphere. Gallagher works with fresh, seasonal ingredients so the menu often changes, but the offerings are guaranteed to be indulgent and of the kind that feel like they're a real treat to be eating. Perfect service too.

“A wonderful warm welcome on a cold night!”
Reviewed October 26, 2012

I had been recommended a few places by friends but couldn't get in on that night so I saw some reviews of Stockbridge and decided to try it. From the moment we arrived we knew it was an excellent choice. The place has a dark but warm decor with some nice paintings. We were welcomed warmly, the starters were excellent (especially the pork with black pudding and apple puree) and all the portions were substantial without being daunting and all the various dishes universally good. The wine list was short but high quality and not expensive (we had a Gewurztraminer x2 and a Malbec x2) the total bill for two courses, wine, drinks and coffee for 6 was just over £200....great value. All in all a great find - we will be back!

“Fantastic night.”
Reviewed October 14, 2012

Staff and atmophere in here were great but the food was absolutely fantastic. I had the scallops for starters which were delicious but my husband had the pigeon and it was even better. We both had the partridge for mains and couldn't fault it. Cooked to perfection. Forced myself to fit in a pudding and didn't regret it one bit. My husband had coffee which came with exquisite petit fours which I promptly helped myself too as well. Appreciated that they did champagne by the glass as well. It wasn't a special a occassion but having a glass of bubbly always sets things off on a celebratory note even if it is only a Tuesday :)

Beautiful decor and really should have been much more expensive than it was.

“Excellent Restaurant do go!”
Reviewed October 12, 2012

This restaurant is situated along St Stephen Street, so down the bottom of Circus Place then turn right. Look for the twinkly lights outside and watch the steeps steps down to the basement restaurant.
Once inside you are greeted warmly, and the tables are dotted about to not make it over crowded or intrusive. It has a cozy, romantic atmosphere, with beautifully set linen tables.

They offer a set menu which usually has a chicken main, a fish main, or a vegeterian main. A choice of three starters too. The cost for three courses I think is £23.95 and if you have Mellis cheese selection (very generous),instead of pudding, then it's an extra £3.00 on top of that.

I didn't look at the wine list but we had a very nice Pinot Grigio at a reasonable price.
You are presented with wonderful bread and dips on arrival, then a very pretty amuse bouche.

I had the chicken, it was delicious. Beatifully presented , lots of different flavours and a generous helping. Compare that to Castle Terrace restaurnt with a michelin star and I would say The Stockbridge Restaurant offered' tastier food', plus I prefer the ambience in the Stockbridge Restaurant.
So, two people ate three courses, two gin and tonics on arrival with a choice of gin, and a bottle of wine, all for £70. The surprising thing was it was a wet Thursday night and we were the only two in the restaurant.
So go on treat yourself !

“A gem”
Reviewed September 21, 2012

We found this restaurant, which was very close to our hotel, on Tripadvisor and it was our favorite in Edinburgh. Quiet and atmospheric with beautiful food that we thought was a great value even though we didn’t book on a Sunday and get the special deal. The quality of the bread was a nice surprise, homemade and delicious, and things stayed uphill from there with every course and the wine as well. Can’t remember the specifics of our meal, but we were pleased with everything, and we’re not always that easy to please. We also liked that the restaurant had an intimate atmosphere without seeming at all crowded. We will definitely be back next year when we come back for the Fringe Festival. A real find on a quiet street in Stockbridge.
