Neighborhood: Old Town
Description: The Gonzalez family opened Viva Mexico in August 1984, intending to bring the true taste of Mexico to Edinburgh, and 31 years later we are still striving to do the same. In the intervening years there have been many changes, notably in how the restaurant has grown, but we are still trying to do what we set out to do all those years ago - to give all our guests a real flavour of Mexico. With three rooms spread over two floors the restaurant is equally suited for romantic dinners for two, quick business lunches or parties, the back room particularly can cater for a single group of up to 25 seated at tables or 40 as a buffet.

“small portions!!”
Reviewed January 24, 2013

A group of 12 of us had dinner here for a catch up - we were at a long table on street level which was a shame for the people at the 2 small tables next to us as we were quite noisy.

Service was pretty quick and as I love Mexican Food

I had the chicken burrito - this came out with damp rice and refried beans that did not look fresh. The burrito was half the size I would have expected and the flavours were very bland.

Everyonelse seemed equally disappointed by portion size.

I would not recommend here to anyone!!

“Tasteless.”
Reviewed December 29, 2012 via mobile

We ordered burritos. They arrived with a pile of brown sludge (retried beans) reheated savoury rice from a packet. The burrito itself was filled with damp, cold shredded chicken with no seasoning or flavour. It was drizzled with sour cream and guacamole. This made the tortilla very soggy and unpalatable. The jalapeños were bland. No kick or spice of any description. I certainly would not recommend this place as a taste of Mexico. More a taste of cardboard.

“Nice atmosphere - good location - average food”
Reviewed December 27, 2012

The restaurant is conveniently located next to the Royal mile and close to Princes street.

It's a cute little place, very cosy and the staff are friendly.

The food itself wasn't too bad, but nothing special either. And, taking into account its quality, I'd say a bit pricey as well. We got Burritos and Chimichanga for main, with chicken fillings both, they were ok, but felt more like a cheap takeaway, than a proper dinner.

“Good service, average food, a tad pricy.”
Reviewed December 12, 2012

I am a big fan of Mexican food and one of my favourite places to eat is a Mexican(the excellent Amigos in Sheffield). This was considerably less good though a nice warm welcome set the tone for good service throughout. The food was far from impressive My starter was pretty cold, the main was somewhat tasteless and I would have liked more sourcream but was unhappy to pay £1.75 for it as a side order. At £11 for the main (twice the price of Amigo's) and with expenive drinks (2 quid lemonade and 4.50 a beer) this does't really represent great value. Nothing massively wrong with it, but nothing massively right either.

“Fantastic food great location”

Viva Mexico has an authentic feel to it, the staff are very helpful, and there is. Great range of food on the menu. The lunch menu is particularly good value.
