Description: Memorable flavours and world-class cuisine. A truly outstanding culinary experience, worthy of its Michelin star for the 13th consecutive year. As one of the finest Edinburgh restaurants, 'Number One' presents an innovative blend of Scottish and French flavours. Saute Foie Gras with duck confit. Borders lamb, broad beans and grelot. Rhubarb and white chocolate panna cotta. Take a seat on the golden banquettes and sample some of Scotland's most creative dishes from our tasting menus. Equally striking are the original artworks from The Royal College of Art that hang on the red lacquered walls.

“Empty - why did we have to come at 6:30”
Reviewed September 30, 2012

We picked Number One for a special 30th Anniversary Dinner on our visit to Edinburgh. Our hotel made the reservation but we were told our only options were 6:30 and 8:30. We went in at 6:30 and in the 2+ hours we enjoyed a great meal there were only 5 parties in the restaurant. Number One is located on a lower level of the Balmoral Hotel so perhaps they were saving all those empty tables for hotel guests? Who knows?
The food and presentations of each course were first rate. I feel the chef is doing a great job. There are two choices for price fixed menus available, 55 and 64 GPB. Several unique choices for each course plus they bring several small surprise bites between courses and after the meal. Overall the food was excellent but I feel our total experience was only Very Good since we had to eat so early.

“Impeccable. With no measure of judgement.”
Reviewed September 28, 2012

My first experience of Number One was a Hogmanay Black Tie Dinner. Mr Gary Quinn was a very gracious host. As at every subsequent visit over the last nine years. With reference to a previous review; I'm disappointed that some diners in the 21st Century still expect a Blazer for Dinner. The world has moved on.

Took my niece for her birthday and it outshone anything I've experienced in a long time. the food was something I will rave about for a long long time. My niece who is a real foodie was totally in awe of the quality and presentation of the food and the service was unfaultable
Will return again as there is no other experience of the finest food to beat the Number One in our opinion.
Well done the Number One your name rings true.

“the best restaurant in Edinburgh.”

The quality of the food, the superb service and even the amount of room diners are given ( you are not all stacked in as close as possible ) makes this the most pleasurable dining experince in Edinburgh

“Real Deal 5 star stuff. Tasting menu exceptional.”

Fantastic. Lives up to the long held reputation. Tasting menu a perfect combination of great ingredients with clever cooking. So, scallops, beef etc, but probably as you've never had them before. Special place for a special occasion in quiet, refined surroundings.
