It's hard to believe how small and easy to overlook it was, but luckily we found it. The staff are very nice and helpful and they managed to squeeze us in. The food is simple with no extra garnish as it perfectly defends itself as it is. The haggis with heavenly whisky&cream sauce was second to none. Beef, lamb and venison cooked to perfection. We were even convinced to try some puddings and one must love that parfait!. All was flushed down nicely with a beautiful Californian zinfandel. If I were to change anything, that would be a selection of sides with those meats, because potatoes might seem too mundane. Just a personal opinion. Altogether, a great experience.

Always wanted to visit and with Italian guests had opportunity on Saturday when it was a busy International rugby day. We missed it at first by walking right passed it but quickly found the way down to this hidden gem. Our guests, like us where totally impressed by the choice, the quality and portion size of dishes. They had a fantastic choice of haggis dishes to try if you are unfamiliar with this traditional delicacy. Steaks where beautiful and cooked to perfection, "blue". Fish was moist and full of flavour. Ample vegetables and desserts to die for. We would recommend this restaurant to anybody and will certainly be returning on our next visit to Edinburgh.

We were lucky enough to book a table on a busy Friday night. The restaurent is eay to miss with just a door leading down into a cellar. It is small but we did not feel crowded. The manager was very welcoming and while the menu is not huge every dish we had was beautifully cooked and presented.Ihad smoked salmon and my partner had wild mushrooms for starters followed for both of us by the collops of beef which were cooked to perfection. I managed the Atholl Brousw pudding while he went for the chocolate special. The wine list was good and would suit most pockets. All in all an excellent evening and we hope to come again next time we visit Edinbrgh.

I choose Dubh Prais as a suprise restaurant for my girlfriend to celebrate our first anniversary. In truth it was the first time I'd managed to get through on the phone to make a reservation, and it was well worth the wait. The welcome was warm and the dining room is small and cosy but enough space between tables for hushed, discreet conversations :-) The food was excellent - I opted for the Inverawe platter with duck, venison and ham, collops of beef in a yummy port sauce and a perfect butterscotch terrine, while my parter went for the West Coast (seafood) Broth, chicken breast stuffed with ham and cheese, and the selection of Scottish cheeses. And the coffee came with shortbread and fudge - result! The service matches the food, considerate and attentive without being intrusive and, as we were leaving, we were introduced to the manager and chef, James McWilliams. So thank you to James and your team for an excellent evening!

Lovely small restaurant beneath the Royal Mile... All the positive reviews on here don't do it enough justice. Excellent food, quite good value for money. Had West Coast broth & leek and potato soup for starter, venison medallions with guinea fowl fritter & stuffed chicken for main, chocolate terrine for dessert... Worth a visit if you have a chance while visiting Edinburgh. 5stars!!
