“Bad experience”
Reviewed July 15, 2013

I have stayed at this Novatel a few times for work, and after my last stay I am really going to try and avoid having to stay there again.

The hotel itself has a totally souless atmosphere. The staff are ok, but a couple of the reception staff were not very helpful.

The evening menu in the restaurant is uninspiring and the food is below average. The Breakfast food is also not great - unappetising undercooked bacon and sausages are not really what you want to start the day.

The 'air cooling units' in the room do not work properly, so it is impossible to get a comfortable temperature in the room. Also, the fans are incredibly noisy and seem to turn themselves on without warning in the middle of the night which makes it very difficult to get a good nights sleep.

Novatel had also messed up my booking so I was allocated a disabled access room. The bathroom made it feel like you were in a hospital, and I was horrified to see what looked very much like a blood stain on the shower curtain. Also, around the room there were buttons to call for assistance which had an annoying green flashing light. This together with the noisy 'air cooling unit' meant I had a terrible night's sleep.

All in all a very disappointing experience. Next time I have to stay in the area I will definitely try and book into the Premier Inn across the road as this is a much better option.

Brilliant location for getting in and out of Edinburgh. Two minutes to the train arriving in the centre of Edinburgh for just £3 return. Hotel clean and modern. Only complaint was very poor air on which had been switched off outside the room. Room lovely and spacious with modern clean bathroom. Would book again

I spent one night here in July 2013 while attending a conference. It was my first time staying in a Novotel and I found it to be a very efficient, well-designed hotel for the business traveller. It’s very easy to get to, as Edinburgh Park station is only two stops from Waverley station, and you can see the hotel sign when you come out of EP station. Staff are friendly and amenable and check in and check out were very rapid. My room was clean and comfortable, with everything I needed – except perhaps some moisturiser! The bed was very comfortable, the room spacious and I liked the sofa which made spreading clothes out easy. The TV picture seemed a little poor in quality but this wasn’t a great problem for me. The star was definitely the bathroom, which had snazzy fixtures including a large ceiling shower and a big bathtub with nice, hot water. Breakfast was varied and catered well to the vegan or vegetarian traveller, with soya milk, soya yoghurt, vegetarian sausages and so on. It is a five minute taxi or twenty minute walk from Sighthill Campus (Edinburgh Napier) and makes for a comfortable place to lay your head outside the city centre.

Recently stayed at this hotel and enjoyed the location. It is close to the railway station (2 minutes walk) and costs only £3 return per person (off peak) directly into the heart of Edinburgh. The room is standard Novotel fare but this was my first experience of climate control in a room and have to say I was not impressed. The purported minimum 18 degrees simply could not be reached and the system itself was very slow to respond, Accor please take note. Directly across from a KFC but also has a nice restaurant and had a very good value dinner. Internet was a good bandwidth but the desk was not large enough for business purposes. This room had a nice balcony but this could not be accessed through the glass door because of health & safety ( I asked). Crazy but true. Breakfast offered a good Scottish variety but I had to ask twice for a cup of tea as the first guy had clearly forgotten. The pool was an excellent temperature but a little heavy on chlorine. There was also a decent sized sauna available. The parking facility was right by the hotel and was free. i had a small issue with admin but this was swiftly and efficiently resolved by the front office staff. In summary a typical Novotel and worth it for an Edinburgh visit.

I stayed at the Novotel in July 2013 while on a business trip. It's located outside Edinburgh centre but there is a train linking it to town. The tain is cheap and reasonable if you are alone but for families it maybe better getting a cab which would cost about £15.

Breakfast is ok. Service is below average and selection limited. It is included in the price but double check. Staff are friendly but not great at their job

The hotel is clean, it's is close to a retail park and some industrial unatractive area. The rate is not bad if you book through Internet.
The room is basic so is the tv. There is now free wifi

The bathroom is again basic and the whole place lacks attention to detail. Shower head wasn't working when I arrived and the safe was locked. The curtains are clean but had some sun damage.

The pool in the photo is no where near that size. It's about 7-8 meters long at best. Steam room is ok but changing room again look like council facilities

In all, if you are not going to spend time in the hotel, it should suit you well. Don't expect much is call it a good b&b

Well positioned hotel just off the Edinburgh ring-road and close to a railway station, so it is perfect for leaving the car behind (there were plenty of parking spaces and it was free) and visiting Edinburgh centre via train. The hotel looks new and the room was very clean, the bathroom had a good large walk-in shower and nice toiletries. The room did not have a very inspiring view of a tram building site, but it will be great once the trams are running – if ever… Breakfast was included in the reasonable £75 advance rate and a large and tasty continental breakfast was delivered to the room for free. Pity about the air-conditioning which is quite noisy and cannot be switched off.
