“Convenience, comfort, and whimsy”
Reviewed June 4, 2015 for a stay in May 2015

Russell Ogg’s “The Writers’ Pad” is convenient to Edinburgh’s centre city, it is comfortable, well maintained., and the flat reflects a touch of whimsy in its interior design and furnishing. My dear wife and I visited Edinburgh from the United States during May, 2015. 25A Scotland Street is a 15 or 20 minute walk to Waverley Station and the City Centre, but a five or 10 minute walk to a Tesco Super Store, and it is within easy distance to Broughton Street’s many pubs and shops. Several bus and tram stops are within a short walk.

The two bedroom flat is large enough for four adults. The beds are comfortable, and the flat’s owner provides bedding and towels. The small kitchen is stocked with plates, glasses, pots, pans, and other cooking accessories. The clothes washer is adequate for the needs of four people, especially if wash is undertaken regularly. There is no clothes dryer, but the hallway hoist and pulley arrangement provide dry clothes within 12 to 24 hours.

Interior decorating is pleasing and carries out well the flat’s “Writers’ Pad” theme. I especially found whimsical the addition of an old portable typewriter as a conversation piece and the unusual living room wall paper depicting books on interior design. We appreciated the cable television and the reliable wi-fi. There is no land-line telephone, but we experienced strong support for our mobile devices.

A gas grill is provided in the flat’s back garden for guests’ culinary adventures, and the garden provides a pleasant outdoor retreat.

We came into the Edinburgh airport, made a stop at the ATM machine, purchased tram tickets, and traveled from the airport to the tram’s St. Andrew’s Square stop, and from there walked across York Place and down Dublin to Drummond, across London to Scotland Street, and with a right turn off Drummond onto Scotland Street it is but a short distance down the hill to 25A on the right. The basement flat with its stairs down from street level brings to mind Alexander McCall Smith’s description of the stairway to his 44 Scotland Street’s fictional Big Lou’s coffee shop. Regrettably for romantics like me, there is no actual 44 on Scotland Street nor is there a Big Lou’s; however, did 44 exist, it would be but a few doors down the street from 25A. Even so, if one has read the entertaining series, the spirit of Smith’s tale seems to hang gently over the the real Scotland Street neighborhood. One undeniable reality of the Smith series is the fun, genuine Cumberland Bar. The Cumberland is a five minute walk around Royal Crescent. We made several visits to the restaurant and pub during our stay in 25A Scotland Street, and we found the Cumberland much as Smith described, friendly, good food, good drink, and as Smith relates, in the bar, were a few happy canines and their masters. However, we saw no smiling dog with a gold tooth, neither did we see a dog drinking beer from a bowl.

Our only criticism of 25A Scotland Street is the small bathroom. The bathroom is poorly ventilated, and the huge old tub takes up more than its fair share of the tiny room. In my opinion, the owner would serve guests well if the tub were replaced with a walk-in shower and the wee corner sink replaced with a larger unit set into a vanity. The current arrangement certainly meets basic needs, but with a few modifications, it would be more comfortable, efficient, and better reflect the overall comfort of the flat.

My dear wife and I had a delightful and comfortable stay in 25A Scotland Street. The location is convenient. The owner apparently takes pride in maintaining his rental flat. We certainly hope to return to Edinburgh for another extended stay, and should that dream become a reality, we certainly hope to stay again at 25A Scotland Street.

“HIGHLY RECOMENDED!”

We loved the Writers Pad! Great location just a short walk into the city. It was on a lovely residential street which was very quiet. The beds were comfortable. The kitchen was nicely equipped with everything we needed. There was even a cute little yard in the back. We would definitely stay here again. Russell was a very accommodating and helpful host.

“Absolutely fabulous and will be back!”

Fab location, about 10 mins (or less) walking distance to Harvey Nics, and the day tour bus station. Great place for adults, and good enough for kids of 5YO and above. Short walk to amenities, and nice eating places and easy to get cabs (owner provides a list of very useful info, so read your welcome pack!).

Owner is organized, and reps were friendly and professional. I am impressed, and defo going back. Love the simple but tasteful deco all around. Quiet area, which was perfect for us, family of 4 adults and 2 kids.

Even ordered a fab takeaway when we were too tired to go out, but unfortunately I forgot the name to share it here :( And forgot to take down the owner's email too (must do for future bookings!)

All in all, wish I could keep this place a secret :) but it won't be fair. No hassle refund of deposit too :) Thank you, we really had a blast ; we tried to extend as soon as we arrived (which was of course not available) but, we'll be back ;)

Enjoy!

“Beautiful and stylish apartment in a grand Georgian townhouse only a short walk from the centre”

Beautiful and stylish apartment in the basement of a grand Georgian townhouse in an affluent part of the city. The area was peaceful, felt safe, and was only a short walk from the centre.

The apartment is stylishly furnished, very clean, and has good quality linens and carpets. Lounge and bedrooms were homely and welcoming.

The largest bedroom is at the rear, which can be made up as a double or twin. We had a 9 year old with us who had this room, and liked the garden view. The smaller double bedroom at the front of the property is just off the lounge and looks out onto a small paved area.

Well equipped kitchen with dishwasher (tablets provided) and washing machine, and upon arrival we were met with the keys and tea/coffee/milk was provided, a really nice touch after a long journey!

Loads of useful information was provided in a guest folder, including closest supermarket and a great Chinese restaurant just up the road.

Wifi provided by a mobile 3G router, easy access and was fast enough.

We usually stay in 4 or 5 star hotels, and were not disappointed with our first short stay in an apartment let.

Prompt and efficient booking experience. Highly recommend to couples and families :)

“Very comfortable flat in a great location!”

This was our first visit to Scotland and we enjoyed every minute. That we had this comfortable flat as our "home base" certainly contributed to our enjoyment. The flat is very well located, in a quiet residential area yet within walking distance of all the major attractions in Edinburgh. There are many fine restaurants close by, as well as places to buy food should you wish to cook for yourself in the well-equipped kitchen. The flat has two bedroom with extremely comfortable beds, and the back bedroom has the additional advantage of facing onto a pleasant little garden. Everything was in mint condition, extremely clean and ... in a word, comfortable. All the amenities you might expect were provided, from Wi-fi to a first aid kit. The owner has even provided a library of books by selected Scottish authors, so if you are rained in one evening, you can always curl up on the sofa with a good book. Communication with the owner was extremely pleasant and the check-in was both friendly & smooth. All in, this flat provided great value for money, and we were very happy with our stay.
