We have just returned from Aaron Lodge after our second stay there in two weeks--the first was due to needing somewhere a minutes drive from the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary as my mother was gravely ill and the second due to being in Edinburgh for her funeral. I can't express well enough my thanks to Ted and Dot for the way they took care of us at such a traumatic time--- Ted even driving me to the hospital on one occasion with a cheery: 'It's all part of the service!'
Room 4 was gorgeous---a large room with muted decor and a generously sized en suite complete with a big double shower. My daughter's room, on our second stay, was a lovely 'single' room with a double bed.
I call this place value for money. You would pay a lot more in many hotels for rooms inferior to the ones at Aaron Lodge.

Nothing much to complain, and the owners, Tad and Dot are very friendly. Good homemade dinner. Two things for improvement. More variety in breakfast, and better sound proof in the room.

My sister and I had booked a twin-bedded room for one night, 25th September. We had booked it in June and had also phoned ahead earlier that day as requested to confirm our arrival time. When we pulled into the car park the owner, Ted, came running out as if he was waiting for us to tell us he had a water problem in 2 rooms (he didn't mention that when we called earlier) but would take us to his son's place 2 mins away which had the same furniture, wifi etc but that we'd have to come back to Aaron Lodge between 8 and 8.30 for breakfast the next morning. When we got to the Alpha guest house it was 3 star and not 4 star; there were no staff there and only ourselves and another couple who had also been moved there. In the room the twin beds were only 2ft 6 wide, 2 of the lights didn't work and a couple of bathroom floor tiles were cracked. Ted did replace one bulb but left the uplighter saying it was a "special" bulb. The bedside light shades were only balanced on their bases, the towels were thin and threadbare and had holes in them, none of which we'd expected when booking a 4 star B&B and having had excellent accommodation in other B&Bs on our travels through Scotland. The following morning was an early start as we had to pack up everything to get back to Aaron Lodge for breakfast which finished at 8.30. The owner's wife came out into the car park when we got there at 8.15 and had already taken tea and coffee orders from my sister before I even got into the restaurant. The cold buffet had fermenting mandarin oranges and the hot buffet consisted of pre-cooked bacon, sausages, fried eggs etc which had obviously been standing for some time and were very poor quality eg fatty bacon etc. Breakfast was not a very relaxing experience with both Ted and his wife constantly hovering and removing plates etc almost as soon as we had finished with them. When we came to settle the bill Ted had already mentioned making a reduction for the inconvenience as well as giving us a free bottle of wine. The advertised room rate was £75 and he suggested £65 but quickly agreed to £60 when we mentioned having checked the Alpha guest house on line and it only being £70 and 3 star with no bar facilities. We hadn't consulted Trip Advisor before and had based our booking on the comments on Aaron Lodge's own website. However when we did check Trip Advisor after leaving and saw the experiences of the couple who reviewed it on 6th September, plus a number of others, it confirms our suspicions that over-booking is a regular practice. Having stayed there we are amazed at the number of glowing testimonials. The Alpha guest house does not appear to be a going concern in its own right, merely an overspill facility despite it having its own breakfast room. The owners appear to be "in it for the money" with no level of customer service and Ted has a very patronising manner. An experience not to be repeated.

Room Tip: Choose a different B&B!

Ufortunately we had to change these ladies room as we had a burst pipe and had to put 2 of our rooms out of use. We had hoped to get the rooms up and running before they had arrived but where unable to do so
As the ladies requested a twin room we had no other alternative but to change them to another guest house
We have not had nor did have any complaints from the ladies with regards to breakfast and as they seem to think that we hover !! they had plenty of opportunity to let us know their feelings
This is a first as we have never in 7 years had any complaints about the buffet breakfast.
As these ladies where obesely overweight we should have been informed and we would have looked at larger beds. We have 3ft wide beds in the Aaron lodge and they may not have been suitable either
We do try do our best but some people you just cannot please

This is not the first time we've had the opportunity of staying with Ted & Dot at Aaron Lodge, largely because the facilities and standard of cuisine in their relatively new restaurant are second to none for the price paid top marks !

Room Tip: all rooms seem to be of the same standard

My partner & I just had a 2 night stay at the AARON LODGE EDINBURGH, and can't wait to go back again! The owners (Ted & Dot) couldn't do enough for you. Whilst entering the car park for the 1st time, Ted came out and welcomed us, got in to the hotel, took our bags up to our room and showed us where everything was, unfortunately, we had just missed the eve meal time, but Ted , Dot & the (EXCELLENT) chef saw to it that we both got a superb 3 course meal. The service from Dot & Ted were 1st class. beautiful room, great location, excellent food, great prices, def going back. HIGHLY RECOMMEND TheAaron Lodge!!
