“A flushing toilet would have been nice!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 26, 2010

There was good and bad.
The bad: When we arrived at the guest house the lady who greeted us tried to hand us a room key but then realised that we both had our hands full with cases, bags and coats. Rather than offer to carry something for us, which would have been nice, she just commented that our hands were full then asked us to follow her up the stairs.
On arriving in the room she mentioned that the previous guests had a problem with the flush for the toilet. She said her husband had tried to fix it but there was still a problem - yes there was a problem, it doesn't work!!! In this day and age, the one thing that I would say was a resonable expectation, is to have a flushing toilet! We put in a lot of effort trying to get the toilet to flush which was very frustrating.
The kettle, cups, tea and coffee etc are set on a small fridge which means you need to crouch down to make a cup of tea. My partner has a bad knee so this was inconvenient for him.
In the shower room, although there is a hook on the back of the door with a robe, there are no towel rails so there is nowhere to keep a towel near the basin or while you are in the shower. Its little ommissions like that which make a big difference to you impression when you stay somewhere. There was evidence of holes having been covered over on the wall so I think there probably used to be towel rails.

The good: The lady who greeted us, on realising we were going out to a restaurant kindly offered to phone for a taxi for us and came to let us know when it had arrived.
The decanter of sherry in the room is a nice touch.
Having a robe to use is nice.
Breakfast was tasty.

All things considered, £75 was too much to pay for a small room with a non-functioning toilet. When my partner mentioned it as we left, the lady just acknowledged that she was aware of it. We had paid in advance so thought a small refund would have been nice as a gesture of goodwill, however none was offered.

We stayed at the bonnington guest house for 3 nights, all of which were very comfortable and cosy. Staff were very helpful on where places were and how to get there, Bus information and taxi cards were all at hand. Breakfast was lovely, was very filling. I dont know how anyone can complain.! We are planning our next visit to edinburgh soon and are definatly using the bonnginton guest house again.
Thankyou for a lovely stay.

The B&B where we usually stay when in Edinburgh was fully booked, but we were lucky and struck gold again with The Bonnington. We were given a warm welcome and many apologies for the fact that their phone was out of order (I had tried to call a few times during the day in order to inform then about our arrival time).

We had a family room at the top of the house, tastefully decorated, with a view over the street. A folder was provided with lots of information about the house and the city. There may be some noise from passing traffic, this according to my fellow travelers, but I didn’t hear much myself so I can’t say how much there is. Good towels (to quote my sister, “the size of a small country”), and I also appreciated the fact that there were washcloths as well.

I have to say that the breakfast is one of the best I have experienced in a B&B. There was a lovely buffet and I especially liked that you could make your own toast instead of getting a rack of dried out toast plonked down on the table. There was a breakfast menu which they were very flexible with, for example one of our party wanted scrambled eggs and bacon, which was not an choice on the menu, but which was accommodated without any problem.

We enjoyed our short stay very much and wished we could have stayed longer.

The Guest House was clean, bright and comfortable. We had a really friendly reception when we arrived and our room was ready even though we were a little early. Just on the outskirts of the city centre but we liked that. There was ample parking so that we could happily leave our car at the Guest House and were able to take a very short bus trip to Princes Street. It was just what we wanted and good value for money.

We only stayed the one night but will definitely use this B & B again. We hate driving in Edinburgh so parked our car in their private car park. The Bonnington is on a very good bus route and only takes 10 minutes to the city centre. Our room was huge with beautiful period features, comfortable bed, TV, tea/coffee making facilites and loads of extras which make this a 4* B & B. They deserve it. The breakfast was good too. Our daughter said her room was large and very comfortable too. The owners were very nice without being too 'fussy'.

The Bonnington Guest House is an excellent B&B, situated very close to the Royal Yacht Britannia (one of the places we visited whilst in Edinburgh).

Whilst it wasn't all that close to the centre of Edinburgh (about 2.5 miles), and the car parking and taxis are very expensive, this meant that the guest house was in a quiet location, which suited us.as was the very nice park next door, which was clean and tranquil.

The staff were friendly, and the breakfast was first-rate, as was the whisky they left in the room for us!
