Balmore House
Ranked #341 of 393 Edinburgh B&B and Inns
Reviewed March 16, 2010

Just got back from a stay at Balmore House in Edinburgh. I was very anxious everything went smoothly as I was taking my newly wed there for a surprise weekend to Bonnie Scotland. Was slightly anxious about our late arrival time in Edinburgh as the last reviewer seemed to have had some problems as they arrived late in the evening. I double checked Booking.com reviews first before I made my reservation *good tip*. I gave them a call in the morning and told them we would be arriving at 10pm, I expected a bit of a fuss but they were very helpful. I asked whether we would be charged and was told 'no', because we called and let them know what time we would be arriving. Seemed reasonable to me as afterall it wasn't a hotel but a B&B and probably family owned.

I was still a bit anxious but instead was put at ease by the friendly staff who greeted us and showed us to our room. My husband was suitably impressed the next morning with the breakfast offered....various hot and cold dishes, cereal, fruit compote etc. I even made a request the night before for something that wasn't on the menu options and was quite surprised to see they actually provided it for me.

We really didn't want to leave as we were spoilt rotten by the staff who were so kind and hospitable to us. Admittedly it wasn't the Ritz, but I don't think it was marketing itself as that, just a homely B&B type place and close to the city centre. Long live the Scottish B&B as they still offer amazing value for money- was very impressed and left very happy :-) Thank you Balmore House!

I don'r recommend staying in this hotel. Check-in is only awailable until 9pm, afterwards we had to pay extra 20 GBP, but we could only pay this sum in cash. We asked ourselves, if the Scotish tourist board knows about this. We were not informed about this before, neither the 5% charge for the room, if you pay with credit card. The hotel is difficult to reach and the street is somewhat dobious with mattresses lying aroud. The breakfast has to be choosen the day before, because otherwise "it is not possible"(quotation) for the staff to prepair it. The staff is really unfriendly and rude. After this experience we could not enjoy the room, however it was new, modern and nice. The furniture is from Ikea. The rooms look large, but becouse the bath of the neighbours was built in our room, there was not much space left to move. This hotel is especially not suitable for leasure and holiday, neither for working in the room.

We have just returned from a weekend at Balmore Guest House. From the moment we arrived we were made welcome by all the staff. We were shown our room which had been recently refurbished and was very comfortable and clean. Breakfast was excellent too - most important. We visited Edinburgh for the Tattoo and were given direction to the city centre and where to visit in Edinburgh. Should we return to Edinburgh would certainly stay here again.

We stayed at the Balmore for the second time and already booked again for 2009. Lovely room, great shower, excellent breakfast with a lot different choices and above all - marvellous hospitality! Not only good value for money - much, much better!

Very comfortable stay and convenient location for city centre, either by bus or walking. Room was large, well appointed and decorated in keeping with the style of an old Georgian terrace house. The en- suite, although well fitted out was extremely small - needed to step outside into the bedroom to have space to properly dry off after a shower.

The information provided in the rooms was very general, rather than anything personal from the owners - recommendations for nearby eateries, etc would have been helpful. Breakfast was satisfactory, but somewhat limited in scope and flexibility for a 4 star establishment. Staff were very pleasant and helpful on arrival and at breakfast, although the owners seemed rather surprised to be offered cash for payment and reluctant to accept it....is it really that old fashioned ?

Stayed for 5 nights.Booked into Balmore house but on our arrival we were told that we were infact staying at Bowmore house directly opposite which meant having to cross the road for our breakfast. Lovely breakfast,no complaints there. Parking a problem! We were asked to move the car twice due to some reshuffling. Before going out for the day in the car we were reassured that a parking space would be saved for us on our return. When we returned there were no spaces available! Needless to say when we got our space back the following day we never went out in the car again!
