I have just returned from having a meal at this venue after purchasing a living social deal. The main and cocktail were fine but the rest of the night was spent waiting for a dessert that never arrived. To top this off, we also spent most of the time telling groups of students to stop rocking the end of the table we were eating off and to move away as they were literally sitting in our laps while we tried to eat our meals. I would never recommend this venue to anyone.

I've eaten lunch in Assembly on several occasions and have never been disappointed. It has a lovely relaxed atmosphere with big comfy sofas and armchairs and a bit of a quirky but cool feel. The menu is select but offers a decent range. On my most recent visit both myself and my friend opted for the fajitas, at £7 they sounded like a bargain and we weren't disappointed. The portion was great, it was piping hot and the accompanying salsa, etc had great flavour. The staff were welcoming and friendly. If you're looking for a cheap lunch and somewhere nice to relax with a drink it ticks all the boxes.

I opted for the penne carbonara, bacon and garlic cream sauce. It was truly awful. There was a peculiar minty flavour, but no garlic flavour, throughout. I found earing the food quite an endurance, as overall it was rather unpleasant. My mouth was also unusually dry afterwards becasue the bacon was so salty.

The décor was not very exciting and there were very few people dining or drinking in the bar, which was just as well, given that one young man was left to take all orders by himself.

I had invited people to attend after a business meeting and I understand that most unfortunately one of the attendees, who had a wheelchair, could not enter the building due to lack of wheelchair access. One would not expect this to happen in a restaurant close to the University of Edinburgh, as it is to be expected that a large number of students in similar circumstances could have similar needs to that above in terms of access.

Myself and some friends ate here last weekend and had a lovely time. It was a cold and wet night but as soon as we stepped into the bar it felt so warm and welcoming. It has quite a varied layout with some booths tucked away at the back and some tables dotted about, there is an area out front which when those elusive Scottish summers do appear you can enjoy sitting outside. A few of us chose the chicken and chorizo pasta dish which was gorgeous and the others had the chilli which was a huge and very tasty portion. The prices are brilliant and you will not spend much for a main meal and drinks. This is in the student part of Edinburgh but it has a nice vibe about the place. Would definitely go back.

Used to go to this place a lot last year being a student & enjoyed the food for under a fiver. At that price you can't really complain and the food was decent for what it was worth.

However, start of term and a group of friends and I returned not only to find the prices had increased but the standard of food & service had dropped. We were told at the bar that new staff were on but this should not have been a cover up for our experience.

The soft drinks are almost always watered down or of poor quality and at roughly £2+ a drink, this is simply unacceptable.

Service was poor, we weren't greeted upon entrance and we had to place our order ourselves at the bar because the waiter failed to return to our table and get our orders.

When the food arrived, it was poor. Our food was cold and the Nachos were disappointingly dressed - such poor presentation and hardly any cheese or dips.

They forgot a few things from our order and these items arrived 5-10 mins later with no apology or smile. These things remained on our bill and in one case, we were overcharged for something.

Unfortunately, never going to return to this place. Better spending your money elsewhere. Easy to get wooed by the cool environment & this place is always busy at lunch because students are nearby but don't let that fool you, but you'll end up disappointed (and £10-£20 less well off!)
