“Excellent 2-night stay”
Reviewed April 22, 2013

We stayed at the Salisbury Green Hotel whilst visiting our daughter in her second year at the University - on previous occasions we've stayed at budget hotels. Having experienced Salisbury Green, we won't be bothering with the budget options again in Edinburgh!
The 'standard plus' double-room was modern and spacious and was serviced each day of our stay. Breakfast included choices from a cold buffet and cooked breakfast - both were delicious and plentiful. The service was excellent; from on-line booking, to check-in, to catering and service staff. The free car-parking is a bonus. Only a short walk into the city centre. We would definitely recommend and return for another stay.

Room Tip: We were on the ground floor which was perfect for us after a tiring walk round Edinburgh.

We stayed at this "hotel" whilst attending a post offer University applicant open day with our daughter. We were keen to get a feel for the Pollock Halls campus and the local area, so chose to stay at the Salisbury Green Hotel. We had specifically asked for one double and one twin room and had been assured of this in a confirmation email from Edinburgh First. When we arrived there was no record of this request and alternative arrangements had to be made. Not a major problem but frustrating.

The "hotel" communal areas were closed and breakfast was served in Masson Hall (very nearby). The rooms were comfortable and well equipped but the batteries in the TV remote control and the clock alarm were dead. The service (such as it was) was perfectly pleasant and the breakfast freshly cooked and plentiful.

Overall, I would say that Salisbury Green was perfectly acceptable accommodation but it is not well described as a "hotel". On this basis, I think it is slightly overpriced.

We stayed at the Salisbury Green for the Easter weekend for my first trip to Edinburgh. I found the staff to be very helpful at all times. Our room was very clean and serviced every day while we were there. Breakfast offered a cold buffet and a cooked breakfast. The building was well maintained. We found it a great location being close to Arthur's Seat and with a 20 minute walk into the centre of town. The hotel had the Salisbury Arms just across the road for an evening meal. Overall we had a great time and would definitely return for another stay.

The building itself is very pretty. However, consider the following if you want to stay: (1) the hotel is located inside university accommodation, so there is a curfew. If you arrive after 1am, you have to walk around the big campus to find your way to the hotel. Not convenient if you plan to go out at night! (2) the room was extremely cold even when the heater was on. I requested an extra heater at the reception twice! But I only got one when asked the housekeeper. (3) Internet has a university code that you have to rewrite every time you use! (4) The reception, and sometimes breakfast, is located in another building. (5) The emergency exit closer to my room was locked!!!!
If you are looking for a proper hotel, I recommend you stay somewhere else for a similar price. I you feel like being student, this is an expensive dorm for you!!!

The Salisbury Green Hotel is set on the edge of the Edinburgh University student accommodation campus just behind the Commonwealth Pool. It is an old building which has undergone a conversion into a hotel, and so each room seems to be a different size and shape. The fittings and furnishings are to a consistent, modern standard, however. The reception hall in particular seems quite grand.

The check-in is in the building next door, and entry to both Salisbury Green itself and the room is by credit card-type key. Breakfast can be served in either building; there was some confusion on my recent visit (March 2013) when I was wrongly advised at check-in - if you are told breakfast is next door, it's probably worth checking in the breakfast room (if open!) in Salisbury Green itself before venturing outside (like I did, through the snow...).

The rooms have always been clean, each time I have stayed here (numerous times now). Perhaps it was just the unseasonable weather, but it did seem a little cold in the room once the central heating shut off at 11pm.

My double room had tea and coffee facilities, and the ensuite bathroom contained shampoo/shower gel dispensers, shower caps and shoe shine kits. The small wardrobe had a safe (apparently included in the room price) and iron/ironing board. I seem to recall a trouser press too. The bed was comfortable too. There was a desk with chair and desk lamp.

The wi-fi was free and excellent. Note that if you are a visiting academic, you can also access the local eduroam network without needing a login to the guest network.

Breakfast was also excellent - don't forget to have the haggis pudding.

The location is a little off the beaten track, although the High Street/Royal Mile is only a ten-minute walk away and a bus stop just two minutes away. Edinburgh buses are very frequent and good value (£1.40 a trip). The Pollock Halls site is next to Edinburgh's extinct volcano - Arthur's Seat. Some rooms in Salisbury Green have a lovely view of Arthur's Seat, and it might be worth asking at check-in about this.

Price: I paid just over £70 a night at a "well-known online travel agent". Very good value for Edinburgh.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view - some rooms on the ground floor have high windows without much of a view...

After staying in this hotel September 2012 and loving it, we booked for 1 night in March 2013. Upon arriving we did not have a key card prepared for our room. The receptionist tried to cut one but the machine was not working. She was lovely and did everything she could to help. After an hour waiting we decided to go for dinner. We were away over an hour. On our return, there was still no key. We were let in with the master key. The room was spacious but the bed was very uncomfortable. We got a key the following morning. Breakfast was average, not as good as our first visit.

We stayed at the Salisbury Green for a night in March. The building and the room were clean and had everything we needed for an overnight stay. The breakfast was great, there was loads of choice and the staff were really friendly and and helpful. Free parking on site was a great bonus. I would recommend this hotel to anyone who doesn't want to be in the town centre and will return in the future.

Room Tip: SG15 overlooks the front of the hotel. It was a lovely bright room with a lovely bathroom. There was...
