Rooms- not bad for what you are paying, decent size, toilets and shower were fine
Restaurant - worst experience ever; i was told that i would be waiting half an hour for food which i accepted. An hour later i got my chicken burger, it was rock hard, bread burnt and chips were like cardboard, i just ate the coleslaw. My friend ordered his pizza 10 minutes befre me and disnt get his food. we went to the bar to tell them that he hadnt got his food and the hispanic looking man just shrugged his shoulders. So my friend got his mOney back and went to the takeaway around the corner.

Overall edinburgh is a good city, i would stay in sch again but wont it their food.

Hi there,

Thanks for leaving us a review.

We are glad you enjoyed your stay at Smart City Hostels, and can only apologise for the food quality and level of service you experienced in the bar that you are saying you received.

A half hour wait is not common in Bar 50 unless we have a really busy night, so can presume that on the night you and your friend ate with us, we were exceptionally busy. However, this is no excuse.

If you are back in Edinburgh soon, please do let me know (jayne@smartcityhostels.com) and you and your fiend are welcome to a complimentary main course dinner with a drink each.

Thanks,

Jayne @ SCH

Found this hostel online and thought it looked great for a girly weekend for my 21st in the capital. I picked up the phone and spoke to a male who was about to take my booking when the system crashed and asked me to phone back in half an hour. I called back an hour later, spoke to a lovely women who took my booking (card details included).

Upon arrival, I gave the receptionist my name and number of people I had booked for and she went on the system and found that there was no booking under my name. I was furious and we were stranded!

The receptionist didn't seem like she knew what to do so asked us to wait and the manager would come and speak to us. After a 30 minute wait I spoke to the receptionist about seeing the manager and she informed me that the manager had found us new accommodation, which was great but i still did not get to speak to the manager and after lengthy explanation to the receptionist the manager appeared. The manager on duty was apologetic and very helpful in booking our new accommodation and even took care of the taxi fare as compensation. I cannot rate the service we received from the manager highly enough but the booking service was shocking and I was so embarrassed in front of my closest friends.

From what i saw of the reception are, the place looked very nice, but for a five star hostel they need to sort out their system and ensure that staff know how to confirm a booking properly.

Hi,

Thanks for taking the time to post a review.

Unfortunately, sometimes system errors occur and we are sorry this put a taint on your stay in Edinburgh. You hadn't received any confirmaiton of your stay, nor had we taken the deposit out of your account.

We are glad one of our duty managers helped you out - we do try our very best to provide everyone with good service.

Thanks,

Jayne @ SCH

This hostel is in a great location for the Royal Mile, railways station and the university - we were attending a university open day. The building is a bit of a rabbit-warren. Our room wasn't easy to find and the key-card didn't work - which was frustrating. The reception staff said there had been problems with the key cards for our room - which made it more frustrating as it was already late in the evening when we arrived. It was a shock to walk through the lounge area to get to the room and to see full-frontal male nudity on the large TV screen - not sure what channel they had tuned into!
The room was basic but adequate and clean with bunk beds, a shower, toilet and wash-hand basin. No TV in the room. The cooked breakfast was good value but the room was not cheap for hostel accommodation.

Hi,

And thanks for your review.

It's important to note we are a 5 star Visit Scotland accredited hostel, and therefore we price ourselves in the market in Edinburgh according to this.

Sorry about the key card issue. We are in the process of fixing these intermittent key card problems.

We hope your uni open day went well.

Thanks,

Jayne @ SCH

I have been to this hostel twice, as the location is really perfect, just off the Royal Mile.We booked a private two bed room the first time although we were give a four bed room as they had double booked, and a triple room the second time. The private rooms are tiny and very basic, but very clean with a good shower/wet room. The triple room had a triple bunk which had a double bed on the bottom and single on top, so wouldn't be suitable if you didnt fancy sharing a bed.
The lift wasnt working the first time i stayed and we were on the fifth floor which was a pain, and the wait for check-in can be long.
The breakfast is good and simple, cereal, full scottish with haggis, with good coffee and toast and is till 12 at the weekend which is great, and the staff are very on the ball keeping things stocked up.
There is a lively bar with a very mixed age/nationality - students, travellers, hen/stag parties etc so is pretty entertaining, and the food and drink is reasonably priced and good.
This is a budget hostel so meets budget needs- nothing is fancy, but the location alone definitely makes it worthwhile.
I wouldnt stay here if i was intending to spend a lot of time in my room but that really has never been an issue in Edinburgh!

This is a great hostel. Perfect location, you're literally within walking distance to everything you need to be (high street, the grass markets, royal mile and train station) and the price is fair. Breakfast is good, better to wait until after 8.30-9am to eat though as the 8am rush when it first opened was ridiculously busy! Showers (with great water temperature and pressure) and bathrooms are clean and the beds are basic but comfortable. The only issue we had was that someone came into our room as a late lodger (around 1am) after we had settled into sleep thinking we had the whole dorm room to ourselves. But to be fair, it is a youth hostel, you get what you pay for. Staff were helpful when prompted, not over friendly but not harbouring an awful attitude either. Will definitely stay there again.

Very good hostel in Edinburgh, it's cheap and people are very friendly. The room was very clean and the breakfast is good. They also do 20% student discount! Good position. I recommend it. The bar is very good and it is open until 12.00 all nights.

This hostel is located in a FANTASTIC location which 30 seconds walk from the Royal Mile.
The crew was OK (but they didn't seem to want to help you more than they have to).

The rooms were VERY BIG and had a lot of room. The shower was great. The beds were also very good.

Having stayed in a couple of hostels in Scotland, the atmosphere here was not so good. It's more like a hotel than a hostel: there isn't really a lobby where people sit and talk or something like that.

Overall, a good place to stay if you worry about the location and the quality of the hostel itself.

Hi there,

Thanks so much for reviewing us.

It's good to hear you enjoyed your time here over all, but it is disappointing to learn our staff and the atmosphere in the hotel didn't live up to your expectations.

We are a large hostel, with the comfy couches in the bar being used as the main social area. There are no smaller, more intimate areas that maybe you expected.

We hope you had a good time in Edinburgh.

Thanks,

Jayne @ SCH
