“Not just called smart - it really is!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 5, 2012

Smart City Hostel has lights in the halls and ensuite that are motion activated. Brilliant way to save power - and prevent room mates from leaving light on all night. Everything was modern and clean. Upon entering the room (which was spacious) there was a tile floor area by the ensuite and seperate shower room. Over by the beds there was carpet. Individual lights at the head of each bunk, and lockers.
The Bar/cafe downstairs is a great place to get food and drink for a good value. It is also the spot to hang out and use the free wifi (very complicated sign-on), watch tv or play pool.
On top of all the above good things, the location in great. Just a block from all that is going on in town. Unlike some of the other posters, I did not hear any noise that I couldn't ignore.

We stayed at Smart City twice before when attending the Fertival and both times were a positive experience .... This time we stayed in July and were kept awake ALL night with two stag nights on our floor .. It was terrifying !!! Don't stay here unless your 18 to 20 yrs old and you don't plan on sleeping !.....

Hi there,

Thanks for your review.

We are sorry your experience did not live up to your expectations.

All guests (including stags) are told when they enter the building what type of behaviour is expected of them. All guests are also told about noise levels.

Management would have been more than happy to speak with the groups you are referring to, if you had informed them of the noise that was potentially being made.

We do hope to see you back in Edinburgh.

Thanks,

Jayne @ SCH

Great hotel but the attitude of the bar staff is terrible, One red headed girl, well how she even got a job i dont know! But apart from that a great stay! The food was nice and the breakfast was a great spread, Just off the royal mile so its a nice walk up to town, where you can go and see the bars and what else Edinburgh has to offer, will be going back in the near future.

Hi,

Thanks for your review.

We are glad you enjoyed your stay with us.

Your stag group may well have been impeccably well behaved. As I'm sure you'll understand and appreciate, this is not always the case and bar teams everywhere are put under pressure to deal with several large groups of people consuming larger quantities of alcohol all at the same time. This may cause frustrations between the customers and bar teams.

We would really love to see you back here in future, if the opportunity arises.

Cheers,

Jayne @ SCH

Stay here as part of a Stay party. The location is excellent, and close to everything. Rooms are very clean. The bar and kitchen is excellent, great value, and tastes great. If your want they have a cooking area for guests to cook their own food. Rooms are a good size, and all have key codes. The front desk is always manned and very helpful and friendly. There is also free wifi in the bar50 and reception will give you a code to access it.

I would go bad and stay here again, as it is excellent.

Room Tip: Free wifi downstairs in Bar50 (code given at reception)

I am a school teacher and have just returned from a three night stay at the SCH. The location is superb - just off the Royal Mile.
The restaurant is superb and the breakfast is brilliant value for money.
The rooms are spacious, clean and have a great bathroom / ensuite.
The hostel is also a good mix of school parties and travellers and the bar facilities are suitable for both.

I would recommend this to anyone who wants a cheap and cheerful stay.

We stayed in this hostel after having booked through the stag company, it served us perfectly. We had a room of 8 of us in bunk beds, 2 showers and 2 toilets.

The interior is hardly top class, but you have to remember it is a hostel. The bar area is excellent, nice and large with pool tables and cheap drinks for a big city.

The location is perfect, 5 minute walk from Waverly station.

Reception were very helpful in helping us to find things around the city.

If planning a cheap lads to trip to Edinburgh in the future, then we will definitely stay there.

Awful stay. We will never try a hostel again. En suite smelled strongly of mildew and mold. You could barely breathe in there with the door closed. It's no wonder - the shower soaked the whole bathroom when it was on. That made using the bathroom to get dressed difficult which was a problem for our family. The room was hot making it necessary to leave the window open. Though this didn't help much, it allowed a ton of ambient noise from other guests to keep us up all night. We are talking teenager block party noise - kids screaming just to hear their echoes at 3am noise. There were signs asking that guests keep it down and don't drink all night, but no enforcement or security. Someone even pulled the fire alarm! They need more elevators - they were packed and slow. The stairwell had a trail of blood going up it. There was no wifi on the rooms making it necessary to sit in the bar. The bar was crowded with underage drinkers and teenage revelers. TERRIBLE experience. We didn't sleep well for days while there. There are serious security issues that need to be addressed. Don't waste your money unless you are 16 years old and into partying!!!

Room Tip: DO NOT get a room over the courtyard.

Hi,

Thanks for your review.

We are sad to hear that your stay did not live up to expectations that the majority of our other guests are accustomed to.

As I am sure you'll understand, it's impossible for staff to ensure those outside are behaving in accordance to how we have stipulated they must. We do make all of our guests aware that noise in the courtyard is not acceptable after 10pm at night. Noise does carry up from the courtyard, down from the mile and up from the cowgate, given we are right in the city centre.

We oprate strict age drinking policies, and work closely with the local police on this along with other camapigns. Given we are an accommodation provider, those under 18 years of age are allowed in the bar at all times aslong as they are with an adult.

If you had made reception or the management team aware of the problems you feel you had with your room, they would have been very happy to help you and suggest possibly another room for you to stay in.

Thanks,

Jayne @ SCH
