We had a great time staying here. There was an excellent breakfast with loads of choices and well-cooked. The beds were comfy and there was a sea view from our bedroom window. Friendly hosts. Bus stop into Edinburgh only one minute walk away. We will stay here again on our next visit to Edinburgh.

Stayed 4 nights in October for the Great Edinburgh Run. This is an excellent B and B. The hosts could not have been more helpful or have done more to make you feel welcome. Extremely clean and comfortable, The breakfast was 5 star. Located in Portobello just east of the city center, bus access very frequent, only 15 minute ride, just a few feet from the beach
strand. Very quiet upscale neighbourhood. Whatever you need, Mac and Marion are more than pleased to help out. First visit to Edinburgh....a lovely city and this is most certainly the place to stay. Thanks for a wonderful visit.

We stayed here with another couple for a few nights in September, 2012, we were 2 American couples in Scotland for the first time. I cannot say enough good things about this place. I love Victorian and Edwardian architecture and this house and the others around it in the PortoBello neighborhood are stunning in a well-loved way, beautiful, elegant, unique- and not stuffy. I have already picked out my dream home. The rooms are lovely, comfortable and immaculate. Mac and Marian are extremely friendly and make wonderful breakfasts! We were paces from the pretty beach which was lovely to walk and only a 15 min doubledecker bus ride to the center of Edinburgh, where we had an excellent time taking in the sights. Mac was super helpful to us in getting to the bus and getting bus passes-VERY EASY AND CHEAP. Great little vintage shops, nice pubs, friendly locals in the village. Can't wait to go back...

Room Tip: We occupied 2 rooms and they were equivalent in decor, Room 4 a tad bigger than Room 2 and was direc...

My wife and I visited this inn while visiting with our son who was studying abroad at Edinburgh University. This was our first time to Scotland. Mac and his wife were the perfect hosts. Mac had a particular knack to sense exactly what we needed throughout our stay, and was very accomodating and helpful. I enjoyed his pleasant wit and sense of humor, too. I particularly liked the beach/promenade location. Very unique. It was nice to escape the city at the end of our touring day, and relax along the shore in this quiet friendly beachside neighborhood. For an inexpensive and tasty local dinner, we enjoyed the "Espy" restaurant a short walk down the beach. I would return here in a heartbeat. Wonderful guest house.

Straven Guest House was not only a great value, but cozy and very clean. Transportation into the heart of the city was easy . Mac was a delightful host. It was also the best breakfast of any hotel we stayed at. I would highly recommend to anyone.

This B&B is located in Joppa, a suburb of Glasgow that is by the sea so, from the location alone you have the best of both worlds - the promenade and beach is about a minute's walk away and the centre of Edinburgh is about 20 minutes bus ride. Buses are every 10 minutes and cost £1.40 for a single. This guest house is a lovely old building with high cielinged rooms that are light and airy. From our room window, we could see the Firth of Forth and began each day watching the sea birds diving for fish before going down for breakfast. There are several choices of breakfast and the full fried breakfast was excellent, as was the porridge with cream. Standards of cleanliness are very high and the proprieter made us feel very welcome with his easy cheerful manner. I would have no hesitation in recommending this place to anyone or returning myself when in that part of the world.

Room Tip: Room no 3 has a great view of the sea.
