Whenever we've been to Edinburgh, we've always made time to stop by the New Town bar.
However, we went in yesterday (Sat eve/Sun morning 15/16 Sep) after midnight and we've come away hugely disappointed.
Bar service upstairs poor. You can get served with a scowl and a sniff fast enough, but the place is dead now, Whatever happened to the smiley guys who would find you in a crowd and serve you? Last night was Bear's Night - the place used to be mobbed - not now ! ...and where's the cheesy music ?
Downstairs bar service is a world apart - beaming young guy was doing a great job.
But the fiasco is the new dance floor pumping out noise to a completely disinterested bunch of guys who looked as bewildered as we did.
No cloakroom now, and the place was uncomfortably warm.
No dark area anymore either - there was a black curtain partly pulled over in front of a 10 x 6 ft recess but there was a bunch of guys in there drinking and chatting, and filling the space.
And the toilets ? Well blow me, I've seen cleaner toilets in the 3rd world.
The place has clearly lost the plot...and that is a real shame. End of an era for us.
