“Very nice traditional hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 29, 2014

Beautiful traditional hotel with very helpful staff, that could help us with recommendations to restaurants and also places to visit , such as Edradour whiskey distillery (Scotland's smallest distillery, well worth a visit!)
Nira Caledonia had a tasting breakfast menu, which also became a quite nice restaurant at the evening.
The rooms were nice and clean, the only withdrawal were we lived in the basement, and it was the warmest summer in a very long time, so we simply had to sleep with our balcony door wide open. Due to there wasn't any air condition in these old buildings.
We had a very nice stay at the hotel, lots because of the friendly staff, bending over back words to make our stay a pleasant one.

Hello idme
Thanks for a nice little review, you are right, it was a hot summer in edinburgh , (hardly every happens) but due to the hotel being a listed building we do not have air conditioning , we do have a great little bar though where a cold gin and tonic will keep you cool. You seem to have enjoyed your stay with us, please visit again soon

The furnishings in the room were very smart, as were the features in the bathroom, but for 300€ a night (peak season) it was a ridiculously small space for a couple.

There was one tiny wardrobe, about 50 cm wide, with 6 hangers. There was no space to keep 2 suitcases, instead they provided fold.out stands to put them on. The problem being, there was so little space to put them that once set up, one blocked the entrance doorway while the other forced you to step over it in order to get into bed.

There was a lovely writing desk and chair facing a window, but again there was so little room between them and the bed that it was barely possible to sit down at it.

There were not enough hooks in the bathroom to hang up sets of towels for 2 people, and the shower unit was tiny. 'Tiny' meaning that turning around in it required pinning your arms down to your sides and swiveling on your feet.

We were unable to check in till after 2pm - the reason given that they'd had a late check-out. However, after requesting a late check out for ourselves based on the fact that we had to wait so late when we checked in, we were reluctantly given an extra hour (of course they stated their Ts & Cs of not guaranteeing check-in before 3 pm!)

Technically of course they are legally covered but it would have been a doable concession to make for a disgruntled customer (it would take 15 minutes to turn the room over).

Yes the location was lovely and the breakfast excellent, but given the price of the hotel we left with a sour taste due the lack of comfort and the slight meanness on the hotel's behalf.

Room Tip: Demand a room with a reasonable size.

Hello Damovski

Well this is difficult! Let's address this and see where we end up. It's hard to know which room you stayed in as you don't mention but it's clear it was one of our "petite double's". Now with out sounding rude, these are small rooms hence the name. I'm always slightly annoyed when guests have a choice of room, take the smallest and thus the cheapest and then complain about the size of the room when we go to extreme lengths on our website to show pictures, square footage etc, yes some of the rooms are tight on space if there are 2 in the party and more than perhaps 2 suitcases but we do offer storage in other areas if requested. It's also worth noting that we are a listed building, this means we simply cannot knock down walls or replace bathrooms due to the age and historic value of the hotel so again, the bathroom size in this room , although small is as practical as we can make it.

You mention that you were unable to check in until 2pm as we had a late check out from the room you were due to go into, as you are aware we ensure all rooms are ready by 3pm and guarantee this in our terms and conditions and on your confirmation from us at time of booking, of course we do strive to have rooms ready before this time but will very much depend on the day it's self and just how busy we are. Please note, it does not take 15 minutes to clean a room in this hotel, perhaps in a budget hotel yes, but here the average room clean for a Petite double is 38 minutes and then it's checked by a supervisor and a final sweep by myself or our Operations Manager before we return it for any guest arrival.
The cost of rooms in August is high, it's Edinburgh festival and every room night in the city seems at a premium so I understand your point about high costs, but trusts me we were on average priced more competitively than most of our competitors in the city and pound for pound given what we offer with our amazing breakfast, stunning rooms and amazing service , I think we are priced correctly .
I as always wish that you had brought these points up to us at any point during your stay and allowed us to try to assist you while in residence with us, but instead reading your review now there is nothing I can do. Please feel free to contact myself at the hotel directly if you feel the need to discuss your review or your stay in more detail.

Well Mr&Mrs Y

What can I say? It was a real pleasure looking after you both during your time with us at Nira Caledonia. I'm glad the F&B team looked after you well and I hope the tattoo was great (despite the rain that night ) hope to see you both again next year.

Just back from a 2 night stay in Edinburgh. The Nira Caledonian is a fantastic little hotel right near the centre, prefect for sight seeing. Being a listed building it has lots of character and is decorated to a really high spec. We stayed in the petit room which was small but had everything you needed and more. The room was furnished beautifully, with good quality pieces. Little touches made the room special, such as classical music playing on the stereo and a good coffee machine. However the best thing about this hotel is the friendly staff, the reception team are excellent, along with the porters and dining staff, but a huge thank you must go to the hotels manager Rory, who made us feel welcome from the minute we arrived. Well done to all, we will be back.

Room Tip: All rooms are beautiful

Well hello nation1
You guys were great fun, I love when arriving guests "get it" . Arrive , go out for a few drinks and a nice lunch , come back about 3pm ish, happy and joking with the staff and straight to your beautiful rooms. The 4 of you were a pleasure to look after and all the team enjoyed your time with us. I hear you are all coming back next year. I'll see you then.

My family and I stayed at Nira in July on our UK trip from Australia. It was the first time we had brought my two young sons to the UK and with one of them having severe allergies we were somewhat paranoid about where we stayed and how we would be catered for. When booking we were told there would be no problems and we were not let down! We had the most wonderful stay, the rooms were perfect and we were looked after beyond expectations. Every member of staff were so helpful at all times, my son's allergies were catered for and nothing was too much trouble. I could not help but recommend Nira to anyone looking to stay in the centre of the beautiful city that is Edinburgh.

Thank you Rory, GM, for such a wonderful stay, please pass on our thanks to all of your staff.

Room Tip: Talk to the staff to ensure they have what you need.

Hey AndrewC
We loved looking after the 4 of you and the fact we catered for all your sons dietary needs makes me happy. The whole F&B team loved bringing you room service as they loved your accents and both your boys were great fun. Families at our hotel are always well looked after and we thought that you guys taking adjoining rooms allowed for some private time for mum and dad, this was a great move, I'd have done the same, hope the trip back to Oz was ok. Hope you come back soon.

I acknowledge our experience was a bit different. We needed a room for three people and so the price for the suite was rather expensive in this little boutique hotel. The room was very nice. Both the bathroom and bedroom have been updated and have a very modern, classy look--it was just pricey. The shower in the jacuzzi tub leaks onto the floor unless you position the glass correctly. The morning breakfast was excellent. The staff was outstanding and very helpful. They almost justified the price. It is a bit on the outskirts if you are walking to the castle or the Fringe Festival, but definitely doable if you don't mind an invigorating walk. Points for being away from the craziness of the Festival. Hats off to the front desk who helped me download the scalped tickets for the Military Tattoo. Loved Edinburgh--wish we had booked another day.

Room Tip: Ask for a view of the water.

Hello Bradsd1
Yes your stay was a slightly different one , working 3 people into 1 room but I'm glad we managed it, in August all rooms everywhere in Edinburgh are at premium rate due to the festival and we do charge for extra beds so this will have added to your bill. We like to think we are central enough for a dander into town but hidden away enough to miss the madness and any way Stockbridge is way cooler than town. Glad you thought the team were excellent we have all pushed through a crazy summer and as I write this the festival has just ended and we me can all go and hibernate.
