Stayed at the wonderful Nira Caledonia for my husbands 50th birthday. We only stay over the bridge but we could have been abroad, this hotel is intimate & every detail is covered, the staff are wonderful & unobtrusive. Our suite was lovely & the food was excellent and not expensive. The location is perfect between princes street & Stockbridge which has wonderful bars & restaurants. Can't recommend this hotel enough.

Room Tip: Room 1005 suite. Lovely

I stayed here on business earlier this week, travelling as a solo female which can be a tad daunting. The staff were most welcoming and the room was lovely, with some lovely extra touches. The bed was extremely comfortable and it was quiet and conducive to a good nights sleep. I didn't eat in the restaurant, but I did have breakfast which was freshly cooked to order. There was a great choice. The hotel is a little quirky, it isn't a big chain/corporate and I like to see these endeavours succeed, and they are clearly trying very hard.

I went here for afternoon tea with a couple of friends for my birthday.

The waiters and chef were very attentive offering to our drinks and offering us more sandwiches and cakes on several occasions.

There were beef, ham, egg and smoked salmon sandwiches. Followed by lovely fruit and plain scones with jam and clotted cream.

Then there were lovely little strawberry and lemon cakes, marzipan bites. There were some other little cakes that none of us fancied as they were all nuts but to be honest we couldn't have fitted them in anyway.

At the end they also offered us a goody bag of the remaining bits.

Overall, a lovely experience and very good for £14 a person.

Discreet, friendly, lovely room. Impressed with the quality. Upgraded room was a special treat. Can't go wrong with the room, service & all comprehensive breakfast. All of staff we have met have been accomadating, helpful & eager to please. Upstairs 2 steep floors with no lift but the manager carried our bags so no worries. Breakfast was buffet or custom, both a hearty start. The jacuzzi in our suite was extra nice after hiking Edinburgh. With no concerns I can say we highly recommend the Nira Caledonia & will be back.

Room Tip: Smaller properties seem to go the extra mile for you.

This is a beautiful hotel with breakfast and dinner included. The food was excellent, the dinner superb, there was no need to go out to dine. Breakfast was excellent with a variety of cheeses, egg dishes, meats...very substantial...and as we traveled around the rest of the country we realized how much better this breakfast was than any other breakfast we had subsequently. The staff was friendly and helpful. Our room was beautifully decorated with high ceilings (it had once been a Georgian home). We booked this directly and found this to be an excellent value. We stayed two nights and will stay again as my niece is going to school in Scotland. I'm from Chicago and my husband and I try to stay in nice hotels when we travel in the U.S. (we recently stayed at the Waldorf Astoria in NYC and I believe the Nira Caledonia was as nice, if not nicer.

Room Tip: Four of us shared the suite on the first floor. Each of us had our own bed.

We booked this through WOWcher - 2 nights incl. breakfast, 1 evening meal and champagne.
Parking could be a little tricky but it's free at the weekend (£2 per hour up to 4 hours in the week) and we managed to park ok. Quiet location, 10 minute walk from town.
Receptionist, in fact all staff, we're very friendly and helpful.
Our room (number 8) was on the top floor (up 60+ steps) at the back. It was quite small and didn't have the high ceilings that all the other floors had, but the view was excellent and the decor was very nice.
The room had a minibar, bottled water, large tv, ipod docking station, hair dryer, krupps coffee maker, tea making facilities, fabric brush, proper coat hangers, shoe horn, ample biscuits, excellent shower, jacuzzi bath, nice toiletries and so on. It was a little cold at first but we turned the radiator up and it soon heated up. The thick curtains allowed a good nights sleep however the bed was a little short for us at 5'10" and 6'4" tall.
Breakfast was excellent although we had to prompt the waitress for many things - milk for our tea, butter for our toast, mustard for our breakfast etc.
We ate the sea bass in the evening. This too was excellent and the waiter was very friendly and helpful.
For what we paid, this was an excellent hotel - a beautiful Georgian building with very helpful staff

Room Tip: Best views at the back, upper floors (there's no lift though)

My wife and I were treated to a Wowcher stay at the Nira Caledonia and whilst everything was fine we were both disapointed. The Petite Double, was extremely Petite, the on-suite wet room looked stunning until you needed the toilet and found you had to squeeze yourself in between the sink and the toilet, and neither of us are large.
We expected a bottle of Chapagne on arrival, we did get Champagne in a bottle but it was a half-bottle. The coffee, tea and biscuits were lovely, but not replenished and we needed to send down for milk. There was only one pair of slippers, the toilet roll was used up and because there was no spare we had to ring down for one.
At the evening meal we were surprised to find that we were restricted to a Wowcher menue of two choices only, Salmon or Chicken, however, we did enjoy it.
Breakfast was like a Curates egg (good in parts), the layout of the dining room made getting to the buffet difficult if more than three people were there at the same time. The service, was chaotic and unless you grabbed a passing membr staff you could wait for an age to order. On one day the breakfast items were luke warm to cold on the other some were hot and others cold, On the pluss side the selection on offer was good and all the staff were friendly.
Being a listed building, means that scope for change is restricted, it also means no swimmiming pool etc. and a small and cramped reception area.
All in all, it was a nice gift but not the luxurious break intended. We have stayed in several hotels in Edinburgh previously and this one, even at a discounted price would not be our choice again.

Room Tip: Do not accept a Petite Double

Thank you for taking the time to write a review following your recent stay with us. Unfortunately however, you have obviously departed feeling somewhat unsatisfied with your overall experience, and as a valued guest, I was disappointed to read your comments that you may not return. I have noted your comments regarding the quality of the food at breakfast and this has now been addressed. Our petite double rooms offer some fantastic facilities with flat screen tv, dvd players, i-pod docking stations, Nespresso coffee machines to name just a few to create a luxury home from home experience. We are disappointed your expectations were not met and we have discussed your feedback with the relevant departmental managers.
