My wife and I stayed here for 4 days for our five year wedding anniversary and it was fantastic! Our room was huge with a fantastic bathroom. Everything was super clean and the room has an vintage feel but with modern conveniences. There was free Wifi, cable, fruit, bottles of water and a bottle of Champagne to welcome us. It was fantastic!
One of the reasons we stayed was because the price was considerable lower than other 5 star hotels in Edinburgh. I'm so glad we decided to stay here. We will stay next time we come as well!
The only things that were a disappointment was there was no forced air, so we had to open the window at night to cool it down and there was no gym. But they said they would be getting a gym completed soon though, so thats a plus.

Thank you for taking the time to post your very kind and positive review of Nira Caledonia on tripadvisor.

We have noted your comments that we do not have air conditioning in our rooms, which is due the the Grade A listing of our two buildings which do no allow for the installation of such units.

I am also delighted to read that you intend to stay at our Edinburgh boutique hotel on your next visit to Scotland and I look forward to welcoming you back.

Yours sincerly,

James Lane

We stayed for two nights in one of the petite double rooms (1010). We were expecting a small room, but not that small. There is literally only enough room to walk around the bed. The bathroom was modern, but very small. If you are on the large size you won't get through the bathroom door, let alone the shower. The bedding was of excellent quality, with down duvet and pillows. The furnishings were nicely coordinated, however the wallpaper was scuffed and had white paint splashes. The paintwork in the room was also scuffed and marked. Our main gripe for the room was the window. I appreciate that these are listed buildings, however there was a 1 cm gap between the sash frames, which couldn't be moved as they were screwed tight. Thankfully the wind was not on this side of the building, otherwise the draft would have been even worse.

The staff were pleasant, but they could have been a bit more welcoming. The overall décor and furnishings in the hotel are well presented. Our cooked breakfast was average, but there was a good choice.

Overall we did enjoy our stay, but something just isn't quite right, and from our experience it is definitely not a 5 star hotel. Looking at the other reviews, it seems that the larger rooms are receiving excellent reviews, however there is some negativity to the small rooms, which i would class as 3 star.

Room Tip: The petite double rooms are tiny

We arrived at the Nira Caledonia after an overseas flight. We were too early to check in so we decided to take a stroll, have a bite. We returned to the hotel at @11:30 to find that our Suite was ready. Check in was efficient, professional and done by a kind and friendly young man.
We were shown to our room which was down a set of stairs and off of a small hallway. I was bracing myself not knowing what to expect. However once the door swung open I knew we were going to be happy and that we were going to regret not staying longer!
We had a very comfortable and nicely decorated sitting area with a couch, leather ottoman, flat screen television, decorative fire place, coffee service, magazines...like having our own city flat.
The seperate bedroom had a King size bed (huge by city standards) beautiful linens. The icing on the cake was a wall of glass doors that opened to our own private patio complete with table and chairs that then stepped down onto a grass lawn/garden that was all ours! Yes, were in the middle of the city but it felt as if we were at our own little private estate!
The bathroom is worth mentioning since it was fitted with the latest high tech fixtures, sleek tiles etc. My only complaint would be that the paint on the trim needed a refresh. The carpet needed a good blast from a steam cleaner too. Overall, it did not hinder our enjoyment of the room and Im very particular about the cleanliness of a room.
We enjoyed a continental breakfast in the morning. The dining room was intimate and warm and there plenty of fresh and delicious choices available for breakfast. The kitchen was closed for renovations during our stay so anything beyond the continental breakfast was not available. We had booked a package that included a full breakfast and the gentleman at the desk adjusted our rate accordingly without our even asking.
My husband and I had a wonderful stay and were sad to leave our lovely accomodations. We hope to return for a longer stay!

My wife and I were guests at Nira Caledonia this past September and our stay could not have been better! The attention to detail is impeccable and we would return there at any opportunity! The hotel is in a perfect location for exploring Edinburgh!

Roman and Janine were extremely helpful in reception & Mar and Agnieszka were very accommodating on breakfast. Chef David was also very friendly and the food was excellent! Mr Lane manages one of the finest properties I've visited, and Edinburgh, as a city is one of the nicest in the world! Looking forward to a return trip!

First the positive's- very good location just off Queen Street. The neighborhood behind the hotel is called Stockbridge and is nice with a good pub called The Bailie where we ate one night because the Restuarant at the hotel was closed for renovation.
The room was modern and clean. Because the restuarant was closed they had a continental breakfast in the morning which was very good.
The negatives- the Restuarant was closed for renovation. No prior notice was given to us when our reservation was made . fortunately we ran into the Restuarant manager who was involved in the renovation and he told us about The Bailie ( we said we wanted a simple meal ,close by the hotel). The front staff was a mixture of very nice helpful people and very unhelpful people. No lift but we did find people to carry our luggage to and from our room. The room, a petite double, was incredibly small. The bathroom literally had no space and don't even think about two people in there at once. The bedroom was also very tiny. In fairness, The website does say it is their smallest accommodations.
My take- nice location, should be better once the Restuarant is available, definitely spend the money and get a bigger room. Remember this is a boutique hotel so it is small overall.
My note to the Manager- retrain your front desk staff, and inform people if the Restuarant is still closed.

Thank you for taking the time to post your review of our boutique hotel in Edinburgh.

I was sorry to read that you were not informed about our restaurant closure. I can assure you that I personally wrote to every guest who was due to stay during the refurbishment of our restaurant and those who did not have email, where contacted by telephone. I am sorry that you were one of the few that we could not get hold of prior to your stay.

I am pleased to inform you that our restaurant is back open again and we are now offering a new grill menu from our Josper chargrill oven. In fact, we are the only hotel in Edinburgh to have this unique oven, which produces really tasty food.

I very much hope we have the opportunity to welcome you back in the near future and at such a time, if I can be of any assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me directly.

Yours sincerely,

James Lane

We stayed here for 3 nights and were really pleased with the hotel. We were in room 10 (executive room) which is on the top floor (there's no elevator so probably not suitable for people with lots of luggage or who have trouble climbing stairs). The room itself was large and beautifully decorated. Teh bathroom is very spacious too. It contained a sofa which was nice as you didn't have to use your bed every time you wanted to sit down and watch tv/read. An Ipod docking station to play your own tunes and there was a Nespresso machine as well which was great for a pre going out or before breakfast coffee. We did not hear any noise from other hotel guests. We did not have the breakfast at the hotel so can't comment on that. The location is fabulous. It's in a beautiful area (very residential) and very quiet which was great for agood night's rest. There's a Starbucks and a Cafe Nero around the corner (on Kerr Street) for breakfast and/or a coffee (2 mins away) or you can walk for 10-15 mins into town to sample one of the great restaurants that are around. We were extermely lucky with the weather (lots of sun) so we really enjoyed the short walk into town.
