“Scottish weather you can put up with the guest house you can't”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 15, 2008

After a long car journey up, I was looking forward to getting to our guest house. From the outside we thought we had made a great choice. Martin was very helpful carrying our bags up stairs. Only to be told my shower and toilet were no en-suite but on the landing.......well what can i say but in desperate need of decorating.....my room overall was ok although could do with a new lick of paint and the carpet needed hoovering. The tv didn't work needed tuning. The window had a bamboo blind and let in the light from the landing.......No wardrobes but a strange hanging pole....place not very clean....my breakfast was ok thou.
Im going bak to Edinburgh in December NOT staying here thou.

On the surface this appears to be a really great little guesthouse, but scratch the surface and there are problems. My friend's headboard on the bed had been snapped off and just propped back up, leaving it loose. The curtain was torn and hanging off. There was a leak through the extractor fan in the bathroom ceiling. The electricity went off and my friends had no power for the shower. One of the breakfasts was virtually inedible. The standard of cleanliness was poor. The owner appeared to ne very nice, but was not very proactive, and though informed of some of these issues, did nothing to resolve them, and in fact was not interested. The only thing they appeared to be interested in was taking your money. Definitely would not go back.

Where do I start??? The room had just been painted so the fumes gave me headache all weekend!. The room was badly organised, eg. we couldn't use the hairdryer and look in the mirror at the same time and the clothes rail was so close to the bed that my clothes hung over my face whilst I tried to sleep! In the bathroom. The shower had absolutely no power at all - I reported it to the owner but nothing was done. The maid (who only made one bed!) left our window open all night so we returned to the "Antartica Experience"! The breakfast was a combination of undercooked sausages and overcooked bacon! On the final morning, the eletrics had tripped throughout the hotel so we couldn't have a shower and had no lighting. Again, this was reported to the owner - again nothing was done.. However, I must add that Martin (who I assume was the owner)was kind enough to give us a refund for all of our troubles ........ £3 each!!!! LOVED Edinburgh and hope to visit again in the future. When I do, I WILL NOT be staying at the Garfield!!!!

Recommended by local resident. Good choice. Split stay and bags were waiting on return. Convenient to public transit. Cozy, clean, comfortable accommodations. Martin, (proprietor) always helpful.
Internet worked well. Very good and full breakfast. Appreciated vegetarian option. Modest room rates. Available parking just across street (Ferry Road). Friendly group of guests. Altogether satisfied, but additional TV channel selections for those early in nights would be good.

Just returned from a weekend break in Edinburgh. Garfield guest house was excellent value for money. Breakfast was superb and staff were warm and welcoming. The only downside was the rooms were a touch shabby and shower pressure was poor. It is situated a £7 taxi ride from the centre of Edinburgh or there is a bus stop outside the door. Would use again for another trip away.

Our room was very comfortable, clean and up-to-date with a lovely en-suit shower room/toilet – for the price I thought it was fantastic value. The full cooked breakfasts were excellent, in a clean and modern dinning room. The free Internet access was very convenient, and the host and staff very helpful. I would highly recommend this guesthouse, and it would be the first place it would try and book a room if I return to Edinburgh.

Don't quite know how this guest house had a 3 star Scottish Tourist Board award. The owner was a very pleasant guy and the breakfast was lovely but the rooms were in need of a lot of tlc. There was no valance on the bed and the rooms were a bit on the shabby side.

It was a very convenient place to stay if you want to visit Edinburgh town as there is an excellent bus service virtually on the doorstep.
