Waverley Shopping Centre is now called Princes Mall Shopping Centre. As you come out of the railway station towards Princes Street, you have to climb up a fair good number of steps. If that is too much for you, it is advisable to turn left and enter Princes Mall Shopping Centre and use the escalators. You enter the building by the foodcourt.
At the moment (October 2010) the shopping centre is in a state of flux. The lift and some other parts of the building were being refurbished. Otherwise it is a two-strorey shopping centre with a MacDonalds, Julian Graves and some other shops. There is a Gleneagles of Scotland souvenir shop in case you are in a hurry, but need to buy a present.
I saw some posters in Edinburgh Waverley railway station, and it seems the whole of the area will be rebuilt / refurbished to make it more accessible. For instance they will do away with the Waverley Steps. I guess that means that Princes Mall will change, too.
