Well, this is sort of an easy way to get around and I guess it's really ok and you ought to do it -- but a few things to consider. There are two companies, at least, that offer hop on, hop off tours of the city. Both follow pretty much the same route. We chose Mac tours because they have a live person giving commentary and history. The other company has a recorded spiel with headphones (albeit in several languages, which is a good thing). We enjoyed the human bantor, though I'm sure the guides use the same lines and same jokes all day. All of the guides appeared well grounded in Scottish history and legends, which, after all, is what Edinburgh is about. The other company, however, runs later buses -- into the early evening. The MAC buses stop at around 5:40p. Now, one bad experience that affected both lines. You generally buy a 24-hour ticket, which we did. This meant we could use the buses for a couple of hours next morning. We waited at stop #3 at the appointed time. And waited, And waited, along with a crowd that grew to be about 20 people. After an hour, it was clear the buses (both lines) weren't coming, though we spotted them a couple of blocks away. A local passing by told us that because of a sporting event, the Edinburgh Run, there were diversions. We walked about 3/4 of a mile to the bus HQ and I complained to a manager that not one conductor the day before mentioned any diversions on any of the 3-4 buses we were on. Also, there were no notices posted at the bus stop, or personnel telling people the bus would not be stopping there that morning. He apologized and, give the man credit, extended our tickets by several hours. He did the right thing, in the end. But we lost much of our morning (waiting from 9:30 to 10:30, then 20 minutes walking to the bus HQ, then 20 minutes before getting on another bus). All that said, I again recommend these buses as the easiest way to get around to most of the top tourist destinations.

Thank you for reviewing our MacTours City Tour as the easiest way to get around. I'm glad that you enjoyed the Tour Guide's commentary. They love sharing their knowledge of Edinburgh with visitors and they have so much information at their fingertips that no two tours are ever the same.

I am sorry you had a problem on the Sunday but glad our manager sorted it out for you.

We shall look at how information about events and diversions is shared as clearly there is was an issue on that day.

I appreciate you taking the time to post your review here, we love hearing back from you visitors.

With kind regards

Elaine

Informative n easy to catch, especially when u r running short of time. But, for a one hour tour, if u don't wanna hop off, then, a little overpriced.

Thank you for reviewing our city tours and for recommending them as a great way to see the sights of Edinburgh.

We believe the price is fair and compares favourably to other city tours in the UK and abroad. I hope you did manage to hop on and off to explore the sights that had been pointed out to you.

With kind regards

On arriving in Edinburgh from the train we started to walk to the castle. Instead we decided to get the hop on hop off bus. The Guides were just brilliant with their knowledge and anti dotes. We found this was by far the best way to see this historic city.

Thank you for recommending our tours as the best way to see the city, we agree.

Our starting point next to the Waverley Station is handy for those just arriving and wanting to explore Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Mile - it's quite a climb otherwise!

Our team of Guides will love being called brilliant, they enjoy sharing their knowledge and stories.

We appreciate you taking the time to post a review here.

With best wishes

Highly recommend using the Hop on Hop off buses to see most of Edinburgh. Guides are informative and full of humour. Worth paying the extra £4 for the Grand Ticket which allows you to take all the busses!!
