It is a bit tricky to find at first (we took a bus), but friendly locals pointed us in the right direction. Breakfast was fabulous and home cooked. The room was great and very clean with a tea pot and complimentary tea. The best part of it for me? The friendly golden retrievers who were always game for a good belly rub! It felt like I was staying at my family's house instead of in a hotel, which to me is always a good feeling when you're on the road.

My stay at the Hotel Ceilidh-Donia was wonderful. The location is great for Edinburgh exploration. Pay the £ 3.50 for an all-day bus pass; it will pay for itself many times over. It’s an easy 15 minute bus trip from the C-D to downtown. The Hotel will give you a map with information on the back – use it, and take it with you!
My room was spacious and warm, the shower was the best I’ve ever seen. Take note of the warning sign, the towel racks are hot! The bed was huge and comfortable.
There are no sounds at night, crack the window (even in winter) and sleep like a baby.
The food is well prepared and plentiful; you will have plenty of energy to make it to lunch.
You will not be sorry if you stay at the Hotel Ceilidh-Donia.

Room Tip: The second floor is best, room 2 in particular.

Dear Reviewer

Thank you for a thoughtful review, great to know that Edinburgh's superb Buses and that the Day Pass is good value for money, for just £3.50 you can go anywhere and on as many Buses as you like all Day.
The Map that we make and Illustrate we believe is of great help and yes there are lots of Maps of Edinburgh but we look at our Map from a tourists point of view we hope, on a where am I, Where do I want to go and Where is Home (E. T. Tee hee hee) at the end of the Day's sightseeing and we hope that all Roads lead Back Home to The Hotel Ceilidh-Donia at night.

We get lots of comments about the Showers, I don't know if I am aloud to Inadvertently advertise on Tripadvisor but the Showers are called Aqualisa and have an inbuilt Low Voltage Pump that gives an excellent wakeup call in the Morning and hopefully because they are so good there is enough Hot Water for all our Guests when they need them..

We had a belated Valentine's weekend in Edinburgh, and stayed at the Hotel Ceilidh-Donia, on the basis of your reviews, dear Trip Advisors. It had everything we wanted really. Maxx and Annette were really welcoming - it felt a bit like staying in someone's house rather than in a hotel - which perhaps was not far from the truth.
Now listen Trip Advising friends - if you want a hotel slap bang in Edinburgh city centre this is NOT for you. We loved the walk to and fro, but if a distance of anything more than 500 yards sends you scurrying for your mobility scooter then book somewhere else. If, on the other hand, you are prepared to shake a leg, then this hotel is perfectly placed for Holyrood Park and the splendid pull up to Arthur's Seat.
The room was a decent size, clean and tidy. We had WiFi access and breakfast was very nice if a little slow. Overall this was a very good place to stay and priced very competitively. We'd certainly be delighted to return. Thanks Maxx and Annette!

Aha, Location, location, location as they say is everything, as these Guests have found out our Hotel is ideally placed for those Travellers who enjoy a nice walk into Town or around the neighbourhood , the Hotel is in a quiet residential area with a few other Guest House and B and Bs nearby, within a few minutes’ walk we have Swimming Pools, Bird Sanctuaries, Golf Courses to name but a few things that make it wonderful to work and stay in this Location, and of course dear TripAdvisor reader ‘s you can stay with us too, all you have to do is Book with us, Tee hee hee

I will tell Annette that it was the Wi-Fi that was slow and not her breakfasts, Tee hee hee, seriously though Janet and Annette make great cooked to order breakies but we can’t control when our guests come down to Breakfast and yes some mornings breakie can be slow but unlike the Wi-Fi you are guaranteed your breakfast, Tee hee hee..

I booked a room for our family getaway as a result of reading the other reviews on Trip Advisor and I was not disappointed. My family had a very warm and welcoming stay and the friendly treatment we received from Max and Annette was much appreciated.

The breakfast was tasty, the rooms were clean and of ample size and the locations was convenient for us. Will definitely be staying next time we pop up to Edinburgh.

Dear Guest

Thank you for a warm review, it’s really nice when Guest take time to tell us about their stay with us, Annette and myself and of course our Staff are all Born and Bred in Edinburgh, a Family Business with Friends who work with us I suppose would be a good way to describe our Hotel environment and hope that we give a true reflection of the friendliness of Scotland and its Hospitality Businesses.

We had a 3 night stay here - a short city break that combined business with pleasure. Our train had been delayed so we enjoyed the 30 minute walk to the hotel from the city centre. It's a in a quiet residential area made up of beautiful, huge sandstone properties. It was easy to find the hotel which was well-lit and signposted.

The proprietors of the hotel Annette and Max were very nice. The system showed us as having booked 2 rooms, not one, but despite this hiccup check in was very smooth. None of the 'computer says no' service that happens in many budget chain hotels. Our hosts were very kind and friendly overall, and printed out a huge document for me to use the next day, which was very much appreciated.

Our room was medium sized, with room for a chair, wardrobe, desk and suitcase stand. Plenty for the two of us. The furnishings were not really to my taste, but they were extremely clean, which is all that really matters. In fact I think this hotel is easily the cleanest place I have ever stayed. There were a few things about the room that could be picked on - the lino on the bathroom floor was a bit loose around the edges and the TV arm was a bit funny, so the screen was angled down. But these things did not affect our enjoyment of the place one bit.

Breakfast was lovely, as many other reviewers have commented. There was a great selection, and a very nice cooked breakfast. I liked it a lot. We didn't spend much time in the communal areas of the hotel, but there were a few places to sit and relax. The map that was provided to us was great, and we went to a local gastropub and had a lovely meal. We generally walked into town and back. My main criticism of the location is actually the bus system - where you have to have the exact change to put into a coin slot on the bus rather than paying the driver. How weird.

We thought we had definitely had great value for money especially with the lovely breakfast and would return again.

Dear Guest

Thank you for your comments on our Hotel and cleanliness of our Rooms, I shall certainly tell Anne, Jill and Katy in the morning that their cleaning endeavours are well noticed, when we bought this Hotel 14 years ago it was just a nearly One Star Hotel, we are now a Three Star Metro Hotel and are considered a Great Value Budget Hotel, we chose all those years ago to Refurbish the Hotel in Pine Furniture as we believed our Guest would maybe not want Furniture that they were worried about scratching or marking and it is certainly as good today (well nearly tee hee) as when Installed.

We also try to keep all our rooms to the same standard whether its Beds, Bathrooms or indeed Furniture’
Things do wear and tear so thanks for mentioning some defects, I will be on too those tomorrow. That is the great thing about TripAdvisor; we have lots of Eyes to tell us when things are not working properly, so we have free quality control courtesy of our Guests, I wish that I had thought of that Idea..

My friend and I chose to have a night away in a twin room following a special birthday.
Our experience from beginning to end was faultless.
Being a little way out of the centre was really advantagious - quiet with easy access to an excellent Gastro Pub just 5 minutes walk away. The bus stop a tad closer than that with a regular service of buses heading into the city which took only 10 mins or so.
Our room was spacious and immaculately clean, fresh comfy bedding and a super bathroom. For the price we paid we would not have expected all the little extras we had, from lovely toiletries to a well stocked tea tray.
Maxx very kindly allowed us to chill our champagne and provided glasses for us.
Breakfast was lovely - an excellent choice and very tasty.
I will be returning with my husband to enjoy another lovely night away at the Ceilidh-Donia. Thanks to the team!

Room Tip: We stayed in room 3 but I'm sure all the rooms would be lovely.

Yes as these Ladies found out it is not just the Champagne that we want Chilled at the Hotel Ceilidh-Donia, we also want our Guests to Chill when they are staying with us, Tee hee hee, seriously though thanks for an extremely thoughtful review and we are well happy that you thought our Location has the best of both Worlds, having the quiet neighbourhood to stay in and the hustle bustle of the City centre only 10 minutes away by Bus.

The Gastro Pub called the Salisbury Arms which we recommend is just a few minutes’ walk away as these Guests found out and certainly is good value for money, it is a Sister Pub to the Sheep Heid, the Oldest Pub in Scotland and is app 700 years Old, it is just the other side of Holyrood Park (Arthurs Seat) from our Hotel and on a nice day is a terrific 30 minutes’ walk past Duddingston Bird Sanctuary..
