Holiday Inn Express - Edinburgh City Centre
Ranked #105 of 150 Hotels in Edinburgh
Reviewed April 21, 2007

The staff at the hotel were great and our room was pretty nice. Our room was on the ground floor which has the view of the carpark (parking lot). The room has no closets except for a couple of hangers on a clothes rod by the wall. If you need a safe, they provide that at the front desk. If you need an iron, that's on the fourth floor. The continental breakfast was fine with toast, fruit and cereal but my problem is that they end it at 9:30 which I thought was too early.

The Express is situated right across the Omni Center which houses a cinema and various eateries and a stones throw away from St James Place which has a lot of shopping including a John Lewis department store. The Royal Mile is about a 5-10 minute walk.

Tip #1: Bring a travel clock.

Tip #2: If you want to just check your email for a short time, I suggest to find an internet cafe (there's a couple on Royal Mile) at a £1 for a half an hour. The hotel charges £6.50 for 60 minutes and £12 for a 24 hours.

Stayed at Hi express for 1 night suited us perfectly meeting friends at the omni centre which was just across the road next to the Playhouse theater as other's have said before me loads of bars and places to eat.we parked the car under the omni and if you get your ticket stamped at the Hi express you get 20%of the cost of parking.
The rooms were clean and were in very good condition had a ground floor room but heard no noise from the street,we had no problems with the staff and the breakfast was good would stay here again.

We chose this hotel based on Trip Advisor reviews and then held our breath until we arrived. No need to worry as it was great. The hotel is very well located for a family trip to Edinburgh. It is easy walking distance (5 mins) from the tourist centres. Best of all it is located across the street from the Playhouse Theatre which means that it is surrounded by lovely restaurants, many of which have pre-theatre dinner specials. We loved being able to have a nice meal at the end of a long touristy day and then only have a few steps to walk back to the hotel. The neighbourhood is very safe.

The room was super clean and somehat Ikea-style with clean-lined furniture, fresh white linen and bright red accents. The bathroom was new, very clean, with good water pressure and fresh large towels for 4 people everyday.

We had a pull-out couch for our two teenage daughters and the queen size bed for us. Not alot of room to move around or storage for clothes and suitcases but it is hard to find a room that accomodates 4 people in the UK.

Great continental breakfast included in the price which was the best rate we could find anywhere - We paid about 100 pounds per night.

We visited Edinburgh with our 2 daughters aged 7 & 9 during the Easter holidays for a short break.
We picked this hotel as kids go free and on previous visits to other Holiday Inn's we had no complaints. The hotel is also situated close to the centre.

Unfortunately there is no parking outside for off loading cases as there are double yellows and the roadway narrows with only room for one car to pass. More annoying is that they didn't bother to tell us about the carpark at rear even when i asked reception for advice.

Then even though the big burly guy on reception could see me struggling with a massive suitcase and 2 young, very shy, children whilst hubby went to park car in multi storey, they never offered any help to get the case down the small flight of stairs leading to our room (fortunately a gallant visitor helped out!).

Our room was adequate apart from no drawers for underwear etc and tight on space because we were using sofa bed for girls. But clean and modern so no major gripes. However the location was terrible, first floor immediately next to reception separated by double doors which were permanently open, but we were unaware of this!. The first night we got no sleep, the second I was so exhausted that I must have passed out!. By the third morning we had to request that they close the doors but we were then kept awake by people letting the doors slam shut! BEWARE ROOM 101 !!

The inclusive continental breakfast was a joke until the final day when the hotel seemed to be fully staffed again. We were then unindated with jams, fresh crossiants and yoghurt (all kept well hidden until then).

We are by no means fussy people (with 2 young children can you afford to be?) but when asked if our stay had been pleasant we both replied No and started to explain why. Guess what....? the receptionists' head went down and she refused to show any interest in our comments!! SPEAKS VOLUMES FOR THE LEVEL OF SERVICE!!

But apart from side stepping the new pool of sick left daily outside the railings of the hotel (very popular hotel with the young, hens and stags?) Edinburgh is a very beautiful and friendly place to visit. The service in the restaurants opposite the hotel (the Omni Centre) is excellent, with particular praise to the 'Slug and Lettuce' who couldn't do enough for the girls.

Express by Holiday Inn is a limited service brand designed for short stays and offering self service continental breakfast buffet, 24-hour Reception, power showers and a lounge bar. All guest bedrooms are designed with opening hanging space and shelves for storage. I would recommend a full service hotel if guests are looking for a luggage service, room service or bedrooms with additional storage such as drawers and a wardrobe.

Express by Holiday Inn offers different facilities and service compared to a Holiday Inn full service hotel.

Express by Holiday Inn Edinburgh City Centre is located in a listed Georgian building and has stone stairs leading from Picardy Place to the hotel entrance. Any guests with additional access requirements should contact the hotel directly. The hotel has an accessible entrance next to the accessible car park on Broughton Street Lane.

Our web-site displays that there is limited first come, first served charged car parking at the hotel and there is nearby charged car parking located at NCP Greenside Row, off Leith Street. The information is also available at the time of booking through our central reservations office. Our team at the hotel do not advise guests of the hotel car park when the hotel car park is full.

Our system is set up so that all guests can add a request to a booking and the hotel endeavours to honour a request e.g. allocating a bedroom near to or away from the lift and stairs, accessible bedrooms, adjoining bedrooms. All accommodation requests are subject to availability.

The team welcomes feedback from guests as soon as there is a problem or concern and the team tries to listen and act upon guest comments. With regret, it can be difficult to try and assist guests who provide feedback after a problem has re-occurred or at the end of a stay.

What a great location! The hotel is right across from the omni centre
which house's many restaurants & Bars. Would definitely recommend Frankie & Benny's. Whetherspoon is great for the breakfast £2.10 + £0.99 for your tea & toast. The Breakfast in the hotel is great aswell but finishes at 9.30am on the weekdays.

The hotel itself is lovely. Pleasant Staff, rooms are clean & spacious enough. I have seen a few posts about the Disco on the weekends. Yes there is a disco out the back of the hotel at the weekends. You could hear it but it didn't really disturb our sleep too much. We where on the 6th floor.

Edinburgh itself is a great city to visit. Would recommend getting the Royal Edinburgh ticket which allows you 48 hours on all 3 bus tours, entrance on the Royal Yacht Britannia which is really great, entrance to the castle & Holyrood Palace. The castle is really lovely
and the views are fab, especially if you have a clear day which we did. You can opt to pay an extra £3/4 for the audio guide. We wandered around the castle for about 3 hours. There was even a couple
getting married in St Margaret's Chapel! Holyrood palace was a little
disappointing but it was on the ticket so we went to visit it. The area up around the castle & the royal mile is lovely for a wander around. Once place we didn't get to go to is down beside Holyrood house is Our Dynamic Earth. If you are travelling with children this must be a great place to visit.

Getting to & from the airport is great. The no 100 bus goes every 10 mins right into Waverly Bridge at a cost of £5 return. The hotel is about a 5/10 min walk from this point.

St James Centre is a shopping centre which backs onto the hotel. Didn't spend much time but it seems big enough with a good variety of shops.

The hotel is nice but a word of warning: on the weekends there is a disco next door that is very noisy until 3am and I was on the 5th floor well away from it! The hotel is very much used by parties and hen/stag nights on the weekend so the hallways can be very noisy at night as well with drunken people finding their rooms. Breakfast buffet is very poorly laid out and very crowded even at 9am on a weekend. That being said the hotel is very clean, everything works fine and the staff are friendly and you can't beat the location (except for the disco out back!). If you don't mind a little noise on the weekend then this is the place for you. I travel with children so I will stay elsewhere next time I visit Edinburgh
