“Excellent for theatre break”
Reviewed January 9, 2014

Stayed here for 1 night with my husband, visiting Edinburgh to see Lion King. Check in was supposed to be 2pm, we arrived at 1230pm and they had a room available for us so we were able to check in early. Reception girl very helpful. Room was ideal, clean and comfortable, perfect for a nights sleep. Room was a bargain at £49 which included breakfast. Managed to also get a car parking space at a cost of £13.50. Hotel directly across from Playhouse which is perfect location. Will stay there again.

Stopped for one night for family trip to theatre. Hotel is immediately across road from Edinburgh Playhouse, so no transport required. We drove to Edinburgh and parked in hotel car park, then were well placed to walk to theatre, cinema, shopping centre and restaurant all from hotel. We could have arrived by train and just walked 10 minutes from station. Hotel was well priced and simple yet comfortable rooms. All in all great location for a short stop.

I just spent a week over New Year's at this hotel. It was very modern, clean, and comfortable. There is a nice little bar downstairs, and a generous breakfast until 10:30 in the mornings. My only complaint would be that the lighting in the rooms is terrible for applying makeup. There is a mirror in the bathroom, and another out by the wardrobe. The lighting is dismal in both areas. I stayed at an super-basic airport hotel for a fourth the price on my way home through London, and they easily solved the lighting problem with a cheap strip of lights above the bathroom mirror. Voila! On the plus side of the HI design, I like that the blow dryer is in the bedroom area so that one person can be showering and another doing hair and makeup in a separate room - very efficient!

I stayed in this hotel with my Mum for a Christmas shopping day at the beginning of December for one night. It was an ideal location to the shops and restaurants and walking distance from the Train station. When trying to check in we were informed that we had a double room, however we had asked for twin, the hotel sorted this out straight away and we were upgraded to a family room.

The breakfast is a bit of a nightmare to be honest, the food is great, just the organisation of the seating could be improved, if people were shown to a table rather than having a plate full and scrambling to find a table this would ease the long queues.

Dear Curls,

Thank you for your review, I am pleased that you enjoyed your stay.
Breakfast can be a very busy time at the hotel especially if a large amount of guests arrive at breakfast at same time, I hope you were not too inconvenienced.

Visited during the city's busy hogmanay period. Expected something fairly basic given the cost, but was pleasantly surprised by the service, room and hotel facilities. Located right at the bottom of Calton Hill and a just a five minute walk to the main high street, we were very pleased with the location as we were still close to all the action but without the hefty price tag. Staff went out of their way to help us with a few requests and cleaning staff were exceptionally helpful and efficient. Only minor criticism would be the size of the bed, but me and my partner are pretty tall. Would definitely go back.

Great hotel, excellent location for Playhouse and all attractions. Hotel was very clean and rooms comfortable and great value with friendly staff, only disappointment is that the TV signal was very poor and after a long day we were looking forward to a relaxing evening watching TV, unfortunately this was impossible as reception was very poor. We had 2 rooms as we were staying with teenagers and theirs was exactly the same so please do something about this in rooms on the lower ground level.

We stayed overnight at this hotel as we had tickets for a show at the Playhouse which couldn't have been handier. The hotel is in a good location for everything. There are plenty eating places doors from the hotel and the theatre is directly opposite the hotel. The St. James shopping Centre is 2 mins walk away. The bedrooms were clean and comfortable and adequate for a short stay. The bar is pleasant and the buffet breakfast was fine. They have parking at a charge at the back of the hotel if available but you can reserve disabled parking beforehand.
