Holiday Inn Express - Edinburgh City Centre
Ranked #104 of 151 Hotels in Edinburgh
Reviewed July 20, 2012

A decent location though I suspect the front of hotel room could be noisy - room at the back was pleasant enough - standard chain stylee, if you've stayed at another Holiday Inn this is similar. Breakfast facilities a little crowded and there's a bit of a limited hot choice - just sausage, scrambled egg and beans - that's the full extent..... and entirely do it yourself. I paid about 80 quid which was fine but the advertised rack rate of nearly 300 quid is gobsmacking...

Room Tip: I doubt there's much difference....

Dear Weesel,

Thank you for taking the time to write a review regarding your recent stay.

With regards to our breakfast, this is complimentary and offers a wide selection, as well as scrambled eggs, sausages and beans, we also offer, cereals, toast, morning rolls, muiller yoghurts, fresh fruit, croissants, cheese, porridge and pain au chocolates, as well as hot and cold drinks, we normally receive great feedback regarding our breakfast, and I am sorry to hear the offering did not meet your expectations.

Our hotel is centrally located, and our prices are in line with the rest of this city, I am pleased to see however you were able to book at a discounted rate.

Kind regards,

Gemma Vincent
Sales Manager.

One of the best hotels we stayed at during our last trip to the UK. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Great variety of food for the complimentary breakfast. We came around 10 in the morning, so it was too early check in, but they stored our luggage in a storage room and allowed us to have a nutricious breakfast. The hotel location is good, close to centre. My wife and I together with two children never took a bus and walked all over the city despite rainy weather. Would stay there again. Thank you for your hospitality!!

Edinburgh is a fairly small city, and I am pleased to see that you were able to get around on foot, there are city tours available but I like you, also enjoy walking so understand that this was a big bonus for you.

Once again many thanks for your review, and I certainly hope to be able to welcome you to Edinburgh on a future occasion.

We stayed three nights and felt that the hotel exceeded our expectations. It is ideally situated only a ten minute walk from the Royal Mile and within walking distance of most of the well known attractions. The staff were uniformly helpful with our requests for advice and recommendations and the room was clean and tidy with the usual facilities. We think it was perfectly adequate for our long weekend and breakfast is included.

We spent 2 nights in this hotel recently. The room itself is ok, it's not very small by British standard, and the toilet is clean. There is kettle in the room, and the package came with a hot breakfast. We had a very good discount so it worked out fine for us, if we had to pay £120 or so for the room, then we would go elsewhere.

A couple of things to mention-
1. The corridor is quite narrow, and we kept waking up by the parties running around next door.
2. There is no view at all as we were facing the back of other people's house, but this is quieter than facing the roundabout.
3. We were overjoyed by the kettle but then found out that the teaspoon had a dried stain of coffee.
4. The location is not exactly central. It took about 7 mins to walk from the bus terminal, (Airlink express) to the hotel.
5. The staff are generally very good.
6. Don't expect new decoration as the hotel itself is quite tired, but with some modern furniture. The beds are fine but the pillows are not. The toilet seats are like those you found in a family run b&b (as against a 3/4 star hoel), old and tatty.
7. The housekeeping staff are polite and friendly

Dear Grace Chung

Thank you for taking the time to write a review about your recent stay at The Holiday Inn Express -- Edinburgh City Centre.

I have read your review and cannot understand why you felt the corridors were narrow as they are standard sizes. i am sorry that you were disturbed by noise the hotel can get very busy at peak periods.

The views from the hotel are limited due to the location being city centre, but higher floors can give a beautiful view over the firth of fourth.

The hotel has just spent over 9K on painting of the hotel corridors and bathrooms, and has a maintenance plan for bedrooms to be painted through out the year.

Thank you again for takeing the time to write your review as feedback is important to all the team here at the hotel.

Kind Regards

Alexander

We had a great three night break in Edinburgh, staying at the Express Holiday Inn. The staff were welcoming and helpful. We arrived during a fire safety drill which was very reassuring, it is good to know that the hotel takes this kind of thing seriously. The room was comfortable and clean, and the hotel is in a fantastic location, we were able to explore the city on foot. The Omni centre is just across the road with a cinema and many fantastic restaurants, especially Frankie and Benny's. An all round great experience!!

We stayed here with a tour group from Image tours. The hotel is within walking distance of the Royal Mile and across the street from a theatre and several pubs, restaurants, and shops. The location is wonderful. Our room was quite small, as many rooms are in city hotels, and we had a shower only. However, the furniture was like IKEA furniture and maximized usable space. Our bed was a double, so a little cozy, but comfortable nonetheless. We were on the ground floor, which meant our window was at or below street level. We had an outer sliding window and then inner sliding windows that were next to the bed. The outer window wasn't locked and we had some concerns about security. Another couple in our group asked to be moved to a higher floor because of this and that was done. We had a person from the hotel come and lock our outer window. It was cool enough that we didn't need to keep it open. We felt safer and we had no problems with street noise.
The only meal we ate in the restaurant was breakfast on two mornings. The first morning, the breakfast area was packed. It looked like there might be an overflow area downstairs, but all the food was upstairs. Among the buffet offerings were scrambled eggs, sausage, juice, cereals, toast, coffee, tea. Additionally, I was glad to see some pastries! We hadn't seen any of those on our trip and that added a little variety for breakfast. The second morning, we went to breakfast earlier and the area was busy, but not as packed as the previous morning. The same offerings were available. There was at least one other tour group (a French one) staying at the hotel.
All in all, this was a good choice for the two of us. There would have been no space for another person. We weren't in the room much since it stayed light until 10 p.m. The key here is location, location, location!

Room Tip: Try to avoid the ground floor (floor 0). There's an elevator, so getting to a higher level would...
