My husband and I stayed at the Apartment by Castle over Christmas 2013. It was my husband’s first trip to Edinburgh, and my last visit was over 25 years ago. Moira met us just as we arrived from London, and had the kettle on for tea to warm us up on the brisk winter day. She showed us the many welcome features of the apartment and delighted us with a gift basket of food so we wouldn’t have to rush to the grocery store. The location is superb – a very quick walk to Princes Street, and the view at night with the Castle lit up is breathtaking.

The apartment is very warm and welcoming. The wonderful living room with deep Chesterfields is very inviting after a long day of trekking around the city. You can cook up a great meal in the efficient kitchen with fresh ingredients from the nearby grocers, or relax with a nice drink after a dinner out at one of the numerous wonderful restaurants throughout the neighborhood. There are many board games to entertain children as well as adults if the weather is too nasty to venture outside, and it always felt spacious, even with 4 or 5 people present.

This felt like being at home for us and was much more enjoyable than a hotel experience. We’ll be back in June for another visit to Scotland and this is definitely where we will stay.

Where to start! First the location is perfect. An amazing view of the castle as well as other parts of
Edinburgh...the Grassmarket, George Heriot's, etc. Its location is great for access to the castle, the Royal Mile, the Grassmarket and many restaurants. The apartment itself is very well maintained and has all the comforts of home. Very spacious especially after our flat in London. The laundry and kitchen came in very handy. Eric and Moira have done a beautiful job restoring its historic beauty. And speaking of Eric and Moira, their service was top-notch. Their communication and suggestions were thorough and helpful. If we get back to Edinburgh, we would definitely stay here again! If we brought our 7-year old son, it would be perfect for him.

Each time we've traveled to Scotland, we always mix our types of accommodations: a little B&B, a hotel or two and self-catering. Believe me, not all self-catering hosts are as gracious and thoughtful as Moira and Eric Bowman. Besides the attention to detail they lavished on the refurbishment of the property at 16/4 Johnston Terrace, there is the absolutely complete collection of amenities within the unit: from oven mitts to wired and wireless networking. Top that off with the attention we received while scheduling our visit and after booking as well. This "concierge" service was very much appreciated. And, of course, there is the apartment itself: warm, cozy, tasteful and about as well located as anything in Edinburgh can be. We've stayed in the 16/4 twice now and we came back the second time because our experience with other self-catering in Edinburgh was simply no where near as good. Edinburgh is a special place whether you're attracted to the pageantry, the arts, the heritage or the history and this comfortable Johnston Terrace flat puts you in a spot that any of that is an easy walk up, down or over.

We recently stayed at the 11/1 Johnston Terrace apartment for a week in connection with our daughter's wedding in Edinburgh. We wanted an apartment "home" at which she could make her preparations on her wedding day and where we could receive family and the couple's friends, many of whom were traveling from afar for the ceremony. The apartment was the perfect choice and beyond satisfactory in every regard. Other reviewers have noted the excellent location of the apartment and the outstanding views. While centrally located, the apartment is very quiet, spacious, and comfortable. The owners are exceptionally helpful and professional in the management of their properties. We would gladly return to this lovely place.

This was our second trip to Edinburgh and our second stay at Apartment by Castle. We actually planned our second trip around the availability of this apartment. As a family of four its soooo nice to be able to spread out in an apartment, have a kitchen and LAUNDRY! I can't even imagine staying in a hotel on our trips any more - all four of us crammed into one little room ....no thanks. As everyone else has said Moira and Eric are fantastic, very helpful via email before the trip and waiting at the front door when you arrive and depart. The apartment has three binders full of information, not to mention a shelf of dvds and guide books on the area. There's a basket of goodies in the kitchen so you don't even have to run out to the market (of which we found two very close) right away. This was fantastic considering we'd been traveling over 15 hours by the time we got there.
The shutters on the windows enabled up to catch up on our sleep and actually over sleep since it was so dark. If you have to get up in the morning, set an alarm!
Great apartment, you can't go wrong staying here.
