Just got back from a one night stay at the outstanding Castle Snug and cannot recommend it more highly. I'm not normally inclined to write reviews but this place deserves the credit for really making our trip to take in two shows. Firstly its so central to everything, 15 mins from the railway station, 10 mins from Usher Hall, 20 mins from the Playhouse and a mere 5 mins to the Castle which is virtually next door! We love staying in unusual places and the Castle Snug certainly fits the bill. Beautifully and sensitively restored you almost step beck to the 1700's when Dr Samuel Johnson was a frequent houseguest of James Boswell, but with all of today's modern essentials on hand.
Brian made us feel exceptionally welcome and communicated well both around booking and arrival, even giving us a later check out time at no extra charge.
We will certainly be staying here again the next time we are in Edinburgh.

We spent our wedding night in the castle snug and everything about the property was fantastic. The owner Brian and his wife were extremely nice and were flexible when we asked to drop bags off early. A great wee place in a fantastic location.
Thanks again guys

I've just returned from this amazing apartment and WOW!
For the past 20 yrs I've always stayed in hotels on the Royal Mile but fancied a change. If you like beige, sleek and lack of character this isn't the place for you! The Castle Snug is just feet away from the bustling Lawnmarket area of the Mile, it's quirky and homely and an ancient piece of Old Town property - if only those stone walls could speak.
It has everything you could need in a holiday let, it's clean and comfortable, superb location and quite frankly you don't want to leave.
As a female travelling alone you also need to feel safe and this place is just that. I was hoping to book another stay right away but it is full for all the school holidays - I am gutted to say the least but it is completely understandable. Once experienced, never forgotten.
The owner Brian is really helpful ( especially when I messed my dates up). Anyone booking the Snug will not be disappointed, it is a very special place.

I almost don't want to review this place because if it gets too popular I might not be able to book it again! You cannot get a better location than this - literally next door to the top attractions in Edinburgh, tucked away in a cute little lane close to the castle and an absolutely stunning, historic property to boot. You can see from the photos how special this place is. The owners are incredibly thoughtful and friendly, we found chocolate biscuits and fresh milk waiting for us so we could enjoy a cuppa on arrival. When we couldn't get the hang of the fire (our fault!) we texted Bryan at 11pm on a Saturday night for help, and he called us straight back and couldn't be more helpful. You will not regret booking this property, I will be recommending it to all my friends and family.

A great find. The location was just perfect for us, right in the heart of the city, close enough to explore and easy to get back at night. It was peaceful - great after a night out. The facilities were super, a real home from home! The bed was very comfortable, the kitchen well equipped and a romantic lounge for nights in!

I can not rave about this little gem enough. Perfect Location! Cozy! Clean! Friendly owners! I am getting ready to head back to Scotland in January 2014 and was hoping to find this property listed again somewhere! If you're looking for a central location to explore Edinburgh Castle and it's surrounding vibrant night life, look no further. This flat is tucked away down a tiny alley which helps keep the street noise out, and there is the coolest little pub not even 2 steps from your front door ( and that's not an exageration, it's right next door ) called The Jolly Judge which does awesome pub quiz every week.

This place is amazing! Historic, romantic, beautiful, cosy, spotless, comfortable, warm, unique, quirky, just perfect, and that's without mentioning the brilliant location right on the royal mile, minutes walk from the castle, the witchery and other lovely romantic restaurants like the maison Bleue. Also just near the galleries, Mary King tour and the camera Obscura which was so good we went back again the next day to go back in the vortex tunnel. Thanks to our marvellous host Brian, best holiday ever and a perfect honeymoon destination.
