The most authentic place we have been to in Edinburgh. We were suggested by our hosts to go there and never regretted, that is why we came back there every day even just for a drink. Lovely place, friendly staff - always eager to help you and knows their customers (from day 2 we were greeted very friendly), good food. They have a map of whiskies - i mean a MAP! Oh wow! I would definitely go back there once again in Edinburgh!

Reviews looked promising and the initial impression was good. A great selection of well kept ales, mostly friendly staff and a nice buzz about the place. An unexceptionable menu but hey, this is a pub first and foremost as the tv screens will tell you. 50% of our small party found the food poor, the other half enjoyed it. Worst was the Caesar Salad, promising anchovies and shaved parmesan but substituted with chopped bacon without any consultation. Don't bother telling me I should have raised this at the time, when dining with friends it's not always easy, plus the chef knows that chopped bacon isn't anchovies and shaved parmesan! Overall I would probably visit again for great beer but eat elsewhere, mind you nearby places offer both so maybe not...

My friend and I visited Edinburgh about a week ago, and one night, we decided to go to The Old Bell because travel guide Rick Steves mentioned it in a video. If you go by foot, you need to realize that it's off the beaten path, and we felt like we had walked "five hundred miles," but we "would walk five hundred more" to go again! Perhaps the friendliest people in the city, and that's saying something because all Scots are so welcoming. Steak pie and pork chop - yummy. Service - outstanding. Atmosphere - fun and cozy. By the end of the evening, we felt like it was our "local."
