Took out 3 rooms for a party of 24. The staff were excellent and arranged dinner and breakfast in the pub below. The rooms were clean and well laid out. Perfect location too, right next to the Grassmarket. Highly recommended.

Stayed three nights with friends. Really clean and well kept rooms and bathrooms. Friendly staff. Good prices. Even though it's above a bar, the hostel is quiet. Great location - right in the city centre. Would highly recommend this place!
This place is brand new and therefore the carpets are clean, the rooms are newly furbished and the bathrooms are clean as well. The bathrooms are also single sex.
On the other hand there is no stove in the kitchen, there is no common area (only four chairs in the kitchen) and the place is right above of the pub. Therefore it was very loud after the pub closed at 1am and also before the noise was hearable through the walls and floors. In all common areas (hallway, kitchen and bathrooms) it was very cold. Our group didn't sleep well at this place. But I cannot judge if that was due to the hostel or just coincidence. When you're staying at the hostel, you get a discount on drinks in the bar, which was really worth a visit. As mentioned before they don't have a stove but the menu is displayed in the "kitchen". I don't like this way of "recommending" the pub food downstairs...
The staff needs to learn a lot though. I had the impression that they tried to welcome you warmly but they miss out on explaining you the place. They basically collect your money. Another thing to criticize is the security. The hostel can be accessed through a door next to the pub but you don't get a key for that door. So you need to ring the bell. They other way to enter is through the pub. The door was open during our whole stay so every pub guest can enter the hostel. The dorm rooms don't lock when slammed. If another guest doesn't lock the door after leaving, the dorm stays open. Small lockers are located in the room. Typical hostel breakfast was included. One bed in 12 bed dorm: £15.
I would stay at this hostel for not more than one night. It's sufficient if you arrive late, want to have a pint and want to leave early again.
Upon arrival at Malone's we were welcomed, or rather not welcomed at all. We were not asked anything about our journey, if we managed to find the place OK, all the usual welcome courtesies you would expect. We were immediately told that we had to pay £5 deposit for our key and £5 deposit for our bed linen, which is when we were handed a sheet, duvet cover and pillow case. We explained that we wanted to pay in cash so asked if we could pay the £10 deposit, drop our bags in the room then head to a cash machine, which was literally two doors over. No was the answer we were given, we had to pay in full there and then! So we lugged our bags back downstairs and thought about leaving, but sadly we didn't!
Back in reception and our stay paid in full, I enquired where the lockers were and what time breakfast was. There were no lockers and no breakfast was the answer. So why are these two things stated on your website I asked!!
So finally in our room, which was as bland as bland can be. White walls, white bunk beds and bright white fluorescent lights! There were no cupboards, coat hooks, bedside tables, individual reading lights, paintings, art work etc. We made up our beds, which to me could quite possibly be the worst way to start a trip away from home, then headed to the washrooms...
These were exceptionally clean, but extremely odd in style as there were four showers, four sinks and only two toilets for all the dorm rooms to share. Whilst in there I overheard a conversation between the man who had checked us in and the young cleaner who was polite and exceptionally friendly, but was getting shouted at for 'costing them money.' Once again I was getting an awful vibe for this place.
So to wrap-up, the cleanliness of the hostel had completely dropped by the time we checked-out with blocked toilets and water all over the shower room floor. The hostel is also not secure as anyone from the bar below can walk through into the hostel, as we experienced when we checked-out and someone was wandering around looking for their bag that they'd left in the bar the night before.
On the plus side the heating worked and was on the whole duration of our stay, but does this make the hostel worth a stay, I think not!
Me and my friend were looking for a budget accommodation from Edinburgh and came across this absolute gem. The place is in a prime location and has been recently refurbished so everything is nice and crisp. Excellent beds, warm showers and very friendly staff! Thoroughly recommended!
I stayed here last weekend for paddys weekend. Rooms were clean and the beds were pretty comfy. staff were wonderful and friendly with helpful tips for good pubs and things to do. Malones irish bar does good food at a decent price. I would definitely stay again.
