We had a Groupon voucher to use here which made the food cheap, however the menu didn't look too expensive anyway.
Starters were slow to arrive, however mains, dessert and coffee followed quickly after that.
Food was excellent - we had fish and chips and fish pie and veg - portions were large and food was steaming hot.
The restaurant it self was spacious and had a boutique feel about it.

We only had one problem with the restaurant and that was the broken card machine and so we had to pay cash. They warned us with a poster before we went it but we had expected to be able to pay on card. It wasn't a big problem, just a bit inconvenient.

We really enjoyed it and would return.

Used a grouping voucher, however , the normal menu seems to have many good value deals too. So I would say peacock is excellent value. Plus drinks are cheap!

Service was a little slow to start but once our starter came everything came very quickly.

Food is simple and tasty.

The decor is really nice, clean and has a warm intimate feeling.

Would go again for a cheap no fuss tea.

Visited restaurant today. The food was excellent and freshly made. Service was good the restaurant was spotless clean and comfortable there are no windows in the dining area and the colour scheme is a bit drab but thats a small thing and I would not be put off the colour scheme.

Thank Topa

Booked lunch based on "Easter" menu. Not available on Good Friday due to non-delivery of food supplies.
No card payment, cash only so had to go out to find an ATM.
Sat down at table in chairs more suited to a children's nursery, far too low for the dining table height.
Ordered some red wine, specifically confirmed with waiter it would be "room temperature", it was quite cold but then as my wife pointed out it was actually at their room temperature which explained why she still had her coat on!
First course of fishcakes was redeemed by some sweet chilli sauce. Absence of any fish flavour and not at all hot on the inside.
Main course of their famous fish (in batter) was grossly overcooked, fish dry, batter brittle and chips were very dark brown on the outside (ie burnt). Tiny portion of tartare sauce.
Dessert was choc. mousse. Had texture of semolina, not at all smooth. But could taste some chocolate.
Was asked on several occasions (every time something was ordered) if we were on Groupon which we weren't. This would suggest the Groupon customers are downgraded to the price they've paid.
A visit to the gents culminated in washed hands and no drying facility, the dryer apparently hasn't been working for weeks and they still haven't considered any alternative like a few paper towels. This isn't rocket science.
Finally the staff were amateurish, one of them loud and repeating customer's orders so we all knew what others were eating and drinking.
A restaurant that struggles to get its supplies in a timely manner, has no phone or website, no card payment facility, sub-standard food and service, inadequate toilets................How do they survive? If you're booking for the future make sure you have a back up plan, when a restaurant is run this poorly, it doesn't normally survive and they don't deserve to.

After reading a few of the reviews on here, I was a wee bit hesitant about going back to The Famous Peacock Inn, but I needn't have worried.

It's been about five years since I was last here, and the place has received a nice, modern facelift since them and it it much better for it. It has retained a few of the old features, like the fireplace and the photos of the Newhaven Fishwives.

We went for the Fisherman's Feast and it was a nice simple menu, with just a handful ofopetions for starters and mains, and two sweet options.

The Cullen Skink and was lovely and thick, with a side of fresh bread and butter.

The battered haddock and chips was excellent. The batter was just right, the mushy peas were perfect and the chips tasted like proper home-cooked, deep-fried chips rather than the oven chips that seem to have taken over most placed. The lettuce was a bit pointless and superfluous, though. Having bottles of proper HP Brown Sauce and Sarsons vinegar on the table, rather than cheap catering brands was nice, too.

I wasn't that bothered about a sweet, having filled up on my starter and main, but it was included in the price, so I felt obliged! Iopted for the chocolate mousse, expecting the usual supermarket fluff-type, It turned out to be a lovely home-made mousse with a bit of fresh strawberry.

The nice coffee was made fresh from beans and finished off the meal perfectly.

The waiting staff were casual, efficient and polite, which I prefer to them being overly-attentive and over-formal.

I'm not sure what some of the other reviewers had to grumble about. We had an excellent meal and will make a point of coming back.
