“Good apartments”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 3, 2012

We stayed here for two nights with a groupon deal 31st March. Went to Queens St to check in but this was not a problem and it does tell you about this on there website The apartment we stayed in was on the royal mile very close to the castle, excellent location. We were in room 3/1 and had to go up one flight of stone steps to our apartment which was okay. The apartment was massive it had two bedrooms one with 2 sets of bunk beds and one double room which was very nicely decorated and traditional stone walls. Th lounge had two comfy sofas and a large flat screen t.v. The whole apartment was very clean and kitchen had everything you would need to cook meals if you wanted, we only used the kettle and toaster but it was clean and modern. The bathroom was nice with the biggest bath i have ever seen it was like a swimming pool.
There were a few stains on the carpet in the lounge but this did not bother us as we were not there to look at the carpet. This was a very old building and yes it was a bit creaky and drafty but i thought this all added character to the apartment. We loved it and would definatley stay here again. Only wish we could have spent more time in the apartment as it was so nice but we were out exploring Edinburgh. Had a great time.

Our apartment was right across from the castle and central to everything that we wanted to see. However it was really hard to sleep with loads of people outside constantly yelling, which happened both nights we were there (it was a friday/saturday and there is a club just down the road.) The thin windows made it impossible to sleep. Aside from that, the only other pain was getting the keys. Having to get a taxi to one location to then get another taxi to take you to the apartment.

After reading all the negative reviews re these apartments, I feared the worse, and nearly looked at rebooking new accomodation. Im glad I didnt !! We arrived early on the Friday morning, and the office in Queens St were only happy to hold onto our bags (free of charge) before our check in time at 3pm. They were very helpful in providing directions, and we found place very easily, only a 15 min walk from Queen Street. The location is just suberb, better than any hotel location in the city, right on the Royal Mile, at the castle end. Granted the 96 steps on the spiral staircase is tricky to negotiate with bags, but it keeps you fit for the weekend, especially as we were on the top floor. We just had an ensuite room, and it was very tidy, and a lot of ammenities, including fridge and toaster !!! I couldnt recomend this accomodation highly enough if your budget doesnt stretch to a 4/5 star hotel. The office in Queen Street were also very accomodating on departure, we had a late flight, and they again agreed to keep our bags for day FOC.

I stopped here with a group of mates for a stag. We had 2 appartments, with cookers, lounge, bathrooms and 4 beds in each.
Having read some of the reviews before I went I was concerned as to what we'd find on arrival. The appartments are tucked away off the main road, but aren't bad at all. The rooms are quite basic, but the location is brilliant. Right in the middle of everything, if you are not going to spend a lot of your time in the room then the location is key, and really we found them ideal. Everything was close. It's about a 10 min walk from the station, but as I said, location is so central it's ideal for sightseeing.
The only downside is it is basic, the place was quite cold, even with the heaters all turned on. And it's noisy. If you can sleep through the bell from the main clock tower going off on the hour all night, you might not be able to sleep through the binmen collecting right outside your window at 6.30am.

Room Tip: Take some earplugs

Stayed at an apartment at James Court (7/1A) for 3 nights. The apartment was TIRED, Not properly maintained. Light bulb missing, wall light hanging off the wall, loose shower fitting, 2 blinds were inoperable, storage heater was broken, electrical fitting in entrance hall had an air freshener fused in it, bathroom shelf paint was flaking, yale lock did not have the deadlock button(it was broken off) the spiral stair up to the flat did not have a handrail, no curtain in bedroom, no cleaning cloth/dish towel.

Room Tip: We will never go back

I also booked via the Groupon offer and my parents went. We were lucky that they got to stay in the central apartments, but the location was brilliant. I had looked at the website and knew about the separate key pick up, so they were prepared for this. I also asked for the lowest level room they had, which helped with all the steps.

It's clearly not luxury accommodation, but my parents were very happy with it, they only wanted somewhere to stay and ate out a lot. They commented that a few extra rugs and pictures on the walls would have gone a long way to make it a more attractive apartment, but they felt that everything was adequate. They luckily don't seem to have had the issues that other people had. Everything worked, the heating went off but someone came out quickly and gave them a heater to use (and it was really cold that weekend).

They had a great weekend, and were pleased they were staying somewhere so central. I don't know if I'd want to pay a massive amount for fairly basic accommodation, but on a special offer it was definitely worth it. I also found the staff very friendly and helpful.

I have recently returned from a stay with self-catering company Tartan Apartments, Edinburgh and was extremely disappointed. Far from the accommodation being luxury as advertised, it was at the very best one star. We had booked our 3-night stay with national website GroupOn at a great price. Myself and my partner greatly anticipated this holiday only to be let down. With the deal we were promised a Castle apartment on the Royal Mile. At the time of booking however, these apartments were full and were offered a supposed equivalent near by in Annandale Street. On arrival to the apartment having collected the keys, we found that there was no parking as previously advise through a telephone call with the reception, meaning I had to make other arrangements to park 15mins outside the city centre and travel by public transport back in. Once in the apartment, it became obvious that it was not presented as described. We did not have a cover for our duvet, no DVD (previously enquired upon) and no bathroom lock or door handle. The kitchen facilities were basic having no kettle, hob or toaster, having only a microwave to cook with, unacceptable for self-catering accommodation. The apartment was also unclean having cobwebs and dusty window ledges. Raising the blinds in the apartments showed a yard, which was filled with debris. This was unsettling as it made the apartment feel dirty outside and within. On the first night the main Yale lock came off the front door meaning we did not feel safe as we could only secure the door by using a key to screw the lock back on, not what you want to do on your holidays! Later the same night, having a restless sleep, we were disturbed by scurrying noises from the bathroom. Only to find in the morning DROPPINGS in the shower base! Either a MOUSE or a RAT but judging by the dump outside the apartment windows, anything could be living in there. On complaint to the reception, we were offered an apartment in Queen Street. We were informed that the new accommodation had no heating due to a problem with the boiler but would have electric heaters, which never appeared. Luckily they were not needed. The cooking facilities were poor, the apartment was not built for self-catering having not fitted kitchen, only a table, fridge and hot plate. There was no sink for washing up so had to use the toilet sink, not normal practice! To top off our awful stay, with the GroupOn deal we were promised Burger and Bubbly. From this I assumed we would get a voucher for a restaurant, however on arrival we were given a small 200ml of Brut and a voucher for 2 burgers from a small café. Not wanting to waste this voucher, we went on our last day at lunch time to use this voucher only to be turned away as the vendor had not been paid and was not honouring the vouchers! We bought our lunch else ware and on return to the apartments we stopped in at reception to question this. We were told after a phone call to the café we could go back and use it, but by this point we had had enough. We were leaving the next morning and had no opportunity to go back. However I do feel that the vendor had the right to be paid before accepting the voucher. The best part of this holiday was coming home. The hassle caused made for an unpleasant time in Edinburgh and a waste of holiday for myself and my partner not to mention the costs involved. I would NEVER EVER recomend these apartments, having to live with a rat or mouse is unacceptable let alone all the other misshaps. I hope that other people are not trapped by the adds as it is all lies.
