We were in the annex building which was undergoing some repairs so we didn't have a bathroom in our group of rooms. Not terrible, but annoying since the place was full and bathrooms often all in use.

For the most part the place was reasonably clean. It was noisy- from the street- every night until about 1 am. Security in the annex was sometimes lax. I found the door ajar more than once.

We had a couple of issues. One, someone came into the room and moved our bed linens around. Since we had no idea why or who might have had access to our room, and no one at the desk seemed to have a clue, we asked for clean linens. We got the new linens, but were never reimbursed for the towel charges for the new towels we asked for.

One night when we went to use the kitchen it was such a complete disaster we gave up. Most of the time though it was ok. Dishes however were frequently not clean and we always washed them before use.

When we checked out we went to get our leftover food which we had planned to eat for breakfast on the plane. The kitchen was locked. There was no sign or warning that the kitchen gets locked and no apparent reason for this to be so. The desk guy said he could come over and open it, but we didn't have time to wait and then come back to check out and still make our plane. A simple sign would have prevented this issue as we could have removed our food the night before.

The staff was friendly, but sort of clueless. No one had authority to refund a lousy pound for the towels or to give us our linen deposit on the credit card it was charged to so we wound up with pounds we couldn't exchange except at awful airport rates and fees. If they charge it to the credit card they should refund it that way.

All in all, just an ok experience.

This is the nicest hostel I've ever stayed in. We arrived in Edinburgh and got a room at Castle Rock, and then promptly left because it was nasty (see my Castle Rock review). We went right down the street and found Budget Backpackers. For about the same price, we got a room for 4 instead of 14, and it was actually clean.

Everything here was very nice. It was very clean, there wwas plenty of room in the kiychen, heck, it even had plasma TVs.

The only problem that we had at all was that there was only one washer and dryer. But we managed to find somewhere else to do it, so it wasn't a real problem.

All in all, I would absolutely recommend a stay here. Don't be fooled by the other places.

Me and the boyfriend stayed at Budget Backpackers at the beginning of the month. We booked a private room, which was pretty large, with a lovely, comfortable double bed, as well as nice and warm considering the cold early Feb weather outside! We had a gorgeous bathroom next to our room, which was very popular with the other residents due to the fact that it seemed to be one of the only ones on our floor without a huge window, letting all the freezing air and nosy neighbours' looks in!
Our room was in the old building, which has been renovated (some of the rooms were still in the building process a month ago), and was nothing like the previous comments.
The staff was brilliant, and we really recommend you take the free walking tour of the city (ask for Matt!), as it was the most touristy thing we did while we were there, as well as great fun.
Also, skip the brekkie unless you can survive on coffee and toast (they had cereal, but only cow's milk...).
Overall, a great, friendly, and cosy experience!

A nice, clean hostel right in the heart of Edinburgh city. The rooms are well maintained and the beds comfortable. The pub crawls and free tours are a great advantage.

Stayed in the Budget Backpackers in Edinburgh for 4 nights. What an awesome experience. Staff there are awesome, and they do pub crawls everynight except for saturday and sunday @ 9pm. Some of the staff were Aussie which was cool too as we could relate to them like old mates from home. We met heaps of cool people there too. And if you want cheap good meals, The Castle Arms just up the road do great meals, and cheap if your at the Hostel.

We have just returned from 3 nights staying at Budget backpackers in Edinburgh which cost us each £10 a night and this is a quick review.

Just for a bit of background in the past I have stayed in a number of hostels some quite disgusting which I will never go near never mind stay in again and some which were quite nice however this is the best hostel i have honestly ever had the pleasure to stay in.

The hostel itself is in a great location on the junction separating Cowgate from Grassmarket in the old town of Edinburgh. This meant that there were plenty of bars, cafe's, restaurants, pubs and shops nearby to visit. Also it was only a five minute walk to the royal mile and you have a fantastic view of the castle from the reception and chill out rooms.

The accommodation was bright and spacious, smoke free and very homely. There was a games room with pool table and giant connect four and a chill out room with plenty of sofas and a big plasma tv where lots of long term backpackers seemed to chill out but all were very friendly. The reception also had three internet ready computers for £1 for 30mins. We stayed in a six bed dorm located on the first floor in the main building. We were given fresh cover, pillow and duvet sheets at the start of our stay and the room was very clean with free lockers inside the room to keep your belongings secure. Our room consisted of three bunk beds which were very comfy and each had a small shelf for belongings and a small light. We found it quite easy to get a good nights sleep as the majority of other ‘hostelites’ were quite respectful when walking through the halls. It has to be said was that there were lots and lots of showers, toilets and sinks throughout the hostel which were regularly cleaned. All the showers were in private cubicles with locks on and you could adjust the pressure from trickle to powershower (my option!). Being a very clean person I was very satisfied with the quality of the cleaning and toilet facilities.

Finally the staff were magnificent very vigilant with security but very friendly and always asking how our stay was going and giving us helpful tips where to get cheap discounted grub and the best bars around the area. I heartily recommend this hostel to anybody taking a quick weekend break, far better value than a travel lodge or somebody wishing to stay longer term.

In short its dirt cheap, the accomodation, location and facilities are excellent and the staff are wonderful, what more could you want.

I just got back from a few nights here. The rooms and bathrooms were very clean. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The location is great too. I would highly recommend this hostel. They give free city tours and organize pub crawls most evenings.
