This was a pretty good stay. Its a must do if your wanting a cheap stay in Edinburgh. You meet a hell of a lot of new people in summer, which is what i did last year and now i still talk to them! Its very bright and funky colours, which made you relax more. It really was a pleasent experience!

A group of friends and I went to the Fringe this past August and after doing some research, discovered that Budget Backpackers was probably the nicest hostel in Edinburgh.

Hostels are not my thing, so I was not thrilled, but after reading some reviews, decided it would be fine for our two night stop in Edinburgh.

The staff of the hostel is awesome and greeted us and were so helpful when we got there. The place looked like a college dorm room and was packed and bustling with college aged people like us.

My friend and I were put in a four person room, and no one was there when we got into our room (we were hoping they weren't going to show). Unfortunately when we returned that night, our roommates were already asleep (and were a much older couple).

The rooms were fight. The mattresses were very thin and bunk beds but they provide fresh sheets for you to put on your bed yourself at the front desk, so you know they're clean.

The lockers are spacious and you should bring your own lock to lock them (you can get locks from the front desk - but you can use one to lock your luggage and one to lock your locker.

The bathrooms are shared, but clean. They didn't smell great, but appeared clean. The showers were spacious with room to put clothes and belongings

There are kitchens and a hangout areas, which we looked at but were always busy so we didn't hang out there.

The best part of this hostel is its location - literally STEPS off of the royal mile.

Overall, I'd say the hostel is fine for a hostel, if that's your thing. It's just not mine. I imagine it would be nicer to stay here when it's not the Fringe festival and there aren't tens of thousands of people coming through the town/hostels.

Kudos to the staff for being helpful, friendly, and keeping a clean hostel.

I stayed here for two nights, one before a haggis tour and one after. The hostel is well located and central, making it easy to get to the sights. The staff are also very friendly and helpful. Would recommend this for anyone looking for good, cheap accomadation in Edinburgh.

I stayed one night in September 08 in this hostel. It was absolutely great. 4-bed-dorm with only females. Lovely house, nicely furnished, friendly staff, clean, good and enough sanitary facilities, nice people staying there, optionally a cheap and good breakfast, great location at the foot of the castle hill (within easy foot distance from Edinburgh Waverley station), and the price was fully okay. So I absolutely recommend this hostel.
