Pros
-Good location, just 15 mins walk across The Meadows to the Old Town. Nice part of town, Shops, restaurants, pubs, hip cafes nearby. You can park right outside for free during the weekend/after 5:30pm, you can park for free during the weekdays about 15 mins walk away.
-Excellent free WiFi
-Facilities are good
-Safe
-Friendly staff

Cons
-You couldn't do your own laundry - you had to pay the hostel for the service (which can cost a bit and can lead to shrunken clothes etc if you're not very specific with the instructions!)
-Our room was a double on the top floor with a skylight. Unfortunately you couldn't open this, nor was there any other window so despite the weather not being particularly warm (I don't think it got to 20 degrees C our whole stay) the room could get very hot and stuffy

The atmosphere was great for a couple. Due to its location and atmosphere, those looking for more of a party stay may be disappointed.

If you're looking for an industrial, orderly hostel, this one's not for you. But if you want a bit of local charm and flavor, then step right in and enjoy the Argyle Backpackers. From the moment we arrived and were greeted by the friendly and helpful staff, until we checked out, we were pleased with the relaxed and unique character of the Argyle.

Positives:
Each room is unique, including the beds.
The breakfast/break room is completely charming.
There's plenty of room for gathering and lounging.
The kitchen is large and equipped.
There's a couple of stores nearby to buy food.
The neighborhood is nice and not too far to walk to most sights in Edinburgh.
Price is pretty good compared to other hostels.
On the Negative side:
The place is a little dingy, particularly the old carpets & some of the bedroom furniture.
Shared bathrooms are small.
We didn't even see the large living room that's advertised on the hostel's website, as the building is rather convoluted; I think a little more information during check-in about the facility would have been nice.

We stayed there for one night last summer, in a 4-bedroom family room (my husband, our 2 daughters, and me); we chose it because many other hostels did not allow children under 18 or stays of only one night.

This backpackers hostel has more than the usual amenities; lounge area, heating, TV & lockers in rooms, free wifi, well appointed kitchens (free tea & coffee) etc.Cash payment required on arrival at this once splendid old house located a pleasant 10 min stroll across The Meadows (large park) from Edinburgh's old town. In the immediate area; mini market, fruit & veg shops, pubs & cafes. Linen provided but bring your own towel. Only slight complaint - bunk beds that creak loudly when occupants turn over!

My partner and I stayed here for the four nights we were in Edinburgh and were not at all disappointed! Argyle Backpackers is two Georgian houses (three stories each) with the centre walls knocked out to make it one big area, but not too big. As such, there are two stairwells and, more importantly, two very well equipped kitchens. Attached to one of these is a conservatory, which was lovely to have breakfast in each morning and led out to a courtyard.

We stayed in double room which was on the third floor (attic) and had a view across to Salisbury Crags. Included was a sink with mirror, a good sized set of drawers, a double bed (very comfy), some lamps and a great sized tv with sat channels! Just outside our room we had the choice of two showers (one which included a toilet) but only a few other doors, so it wasn't at all busy. I must say that the blackout curtain (complete with cosmic print) worked very well, so we slept very well on all nights!

Though we didn't use the common room really, the couches were very comfy but there was only one computer for use (as far as I could see) unless you had your laptop to make the most of the free wifi (great strength).

The other thing I must mention is that just across the road and also around the corner were fresh food outlets (green grocers) as well as a small supermarket and some eateries. Buying our fresh produce just across the road saved us much money but also meant that we didn't have to eat out for breakfast/dinner every night and they were so cheap!!

Thoroughly enjoyed my time in Edinburgh so if I get the chance to come back, I'd most likely stay here again!

I stayed here for two nights on a weekend break from uni and I loved it, this place was everything a backpackers should be:

location - beside the meadows, close to the city centre... I'd say a 15 minute walk.
safe - main door remained locked throughout the day and only residents could enter with keys provided, quiet at night, safe provided in room, will store luggage upon request.
friendly - warm welcome by staff, no issues/problems to bring up during the stay.
clean - room was very clean and tidy, as were all the bathrooms.
homely - cosy lounge, can store your own food in the kitchen, conservatory, easy to meet other travellers.

Overall, nothing negative to say, it was perfect for what we were looking for on our weekend break.

I stayed there for a week in the double room, and then two days in a four-bed dorm room. The room are simple and clean. The restrooms are always very clean. I especially like the kitchen and lounge area. The kitchen is well-equipped and spacious. A very nice place to chat with other travelers. They have two buildings on the same block. Both are very nice. The staff are friendly and helpful. The location is good, too. It's not in the city center, but it's only 10-15 minutes walk to the royal mile. It's near the park and on a quiet and safe neighborhood.

They accept credit card but will charge more on credit card transaction.
