Nice boutique-style hotel which has a friendly, welcoming atmosphere. Staff had a 'can-do' attitude - very helpful with two small children. The hotel is in a great location and there are some nice restaurants nearby. Having said that, we found the hotel restaurant to be nice, especially for lunch in the bar which was excellent. The ambiance was good for both couples and families. There was a nice welcome bag for the kids on arrival. The family room was lovely, although a bit small but the huge TV made up for that! Pool was a great bonus. Would definitely come again and recommend it to others.

stayed here about 8 years ago, things have gone downhill significantly since then. First the pool wasn't available, chlorine levels too high (personally I think they didn't want the hassle with the dozens of bairns in the hotel). The heights restaurant wasn't open in the evenimg for some reason? The metro restaurant was slow and expensive, the 'chunky hand cut chips' were very obviously frozen chips. The bed in the room had a tired mattress which meant we kept sliding into the middle of the bed. We had a room at the back and the rubbish truck turned up at some ungodly hour and made an almighty racket for 20 mins. Hotel had a tired feeling and needs a refurb before I'll return. Positives are location and the room price we got through on hotels. Would recommend viva Mexico in Cockburn street, good meal and experience, the highlight of our visit.

A lovely hotel in a great location. Really friendly and helpful staff who despite being busy always had time. We booked duluxe rooms which had a balcony and an amazing view of the castle. Be warned, the Grassmarket is noisy at night!

Room Tip: upgrade to a duluxe room

We stayed at the Apex International, over Easter to celebrate my Birthday. This was our first experience of Apex and we were very impressed.
There were plenty of spaces in the car park and we found £8 per 24 hours a fair charge.
Our first encounter was with the Reception Staff, they were trained to a high standard which showed. A very good first impression.
As it was my Birthday we were given a complimentary upgrade to a room with a balcony and Castle View. We would highly recommed an upgrade, the view and room helped make a perfect Birthday weekend.
The room itself was spotless, very modern and faultless. The bed was large and very comfortable.
There was some late night noise from the Grassmarket, but it is to be expected, especially during a Bank Holiday weekend, it didn't spoil our sleep, but ear plugs are provided should it be a problem!
The room had a massive flat screen tv, bathrobes, good quality complimentary toiletries and clean fluffy towels. Another nice touch was the complimentary water, biscuits, jelly beans and Pringles!
The hotel is in a perfect location, within walking distance of the Castle/Royal Mile and Princess Street.
Overall our stay was faultless and we would not hesitate to recommend, we will be back.

Our room faced the Grassmarket square.
It was a really nice room two comfy beds, I found the loo a bit tricky yo flush it was a bit of an effort holding down the flush button for 10 seconds. To get the water to clear of toilet roll.

As room comforts we got: -
- A set of ear plugs each
- A variation of tea bags
- A kettle, cups and saucers.
- Hot chocolate (though I'm sure if you tried to make it in the cups there would be no room for hot water, tiny cups).
- 2 biscuits each
- a packet of jellybeans.
- so many pillows and cushions.

The ear plugs came in handy- though more to block out the other guest than the night time noise outside.

The pool was nice and so was the sauna.

We've just returned from our brief easter break in Edinburgh. The Apex International is located in the centre of Grassmarket which is roughly 10 minutes away from The Royal Mile and other attractions. With a little prep before the stay, i contacted the hotel who kindly upgraded us for no extra cost. Breakfast is available for £10 per person, per day, but there is a nice little cafe over the road amongst other places worth trying. We were upgraded to a castle view which was an amazing view!

The hotel has a sauna and pool which leads me on to the reason why it's not a perfect rating from me. We wrongly stayed in the hotel over Easter…When children are on holiday, and they also eat free in the restaurant making it an attractive hotel for families. The pool was more often than not over crowded with children and being unattended by staff, they can cause mischief.

Kids were running up and down the hotel corridors around 7am in the morning knocking on a lot of the doors (including ours).

The hotel is opposite a hot spot for stag and hen parties, so if you're lucky enough to have a castle view… you're going to need those free earplugs to sleep at night!

In summary, our stay was pleasant enough, but there is a lot more the hotel could have done to get a 5 star rating from me (you can always invite me back to prove me wrong!).

Room Tip: Call the hotel pre-arrival and ask if there is any chance of an upgrade

We stayed over an extremely busy Easter weekend, but the staff still provided excellent service. Perhaps though an extra lift, or some signposted stairs would have been useful as the lifts were the only thing we had to queue for!

We had a room at the front of the hotel, so had an amazing view of the castle. However, in common with other reviewers we found the late night revellers on Grassmarket rather annoying!

The location of the hotel was perfect, close to everything we wanted to see, and really easy to access with no hills from the top of Prince's Street!

Room Tip: Front for view, but rear if you value your sleep
