“Perfect location, and both bed and breakfast excelled”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 24, 2013

Gerald's Place is on a quiet street in New Town, mere minutes away from both the Royal Mile on one side and the Botanical Garden and Stockbridge on the other. We took the airport bus and easily walked to the B&B. The room (and bed) were great; breakfast was tasty, and Gerald was full of great advice. Could not have been better!!!

The first e-mail we received from Gerald after booking with him gave a hint about the service. It described in detail how to get to his apartment from the airport and he wrote "you should be here 8.00 pm if everything goes well".
Exactly 8.00 pm we rang the door bell.
And from there on everything was more than fine.
The location is extremely good. Five minutes walk from 21b and you are on the main shopping streets. One hidden jewel that Gerald guided us to was a restaurant/pub just 2 minutes walk from his apartment. We wanted something to eat nearby the first night and he suggested this place called The Magnum. Dont miss! Great atmosphere.
Another thing if you like your afternoon tea is The Balmoral. They serve the greatest buffe in the nicest atmosphere with a harpist playing on a balcony, The Drawing Room. Call and book a table in advance.
Geralds breakfast is another thing looking forward to. He has everything and if you have any requests, he make sure you get what you want. Dont miss the haggis though...
We had breakfast in Geralds kitchen with another couple staying there and it opened up for some great talks in the morning.
Gerald is the perfect host and a gentleman of the old school. If you are looking for a personal place to stay, with great service, this is it.

FIVE STAR B&B !

thank you dear Daniel and Linda from Sweden for your most comprehensive review : your comments will be hugely appreciated by so many people who read the 'small print' about the accommodation [the bed, breakfast and genuine welcome] of geraldsplace.com : we take great care to be the best, and then to better it : so this year the broadband speed has multipled to the fastest available [according to Virgin Media our cable provider] : please come and stay again - next anniversary ? warmest wishes Gerald

Here awaits the lucky traveller, beautiful accommodation decorated in a unique style throughout. The location in the Edinburgh New Town (circa 1820) is an architectural gem. It is minutes away from Princes Street and Waverly Stn., but provides a peaceful location for a restful night. The very comfortable bedroom is of generous proportions and the modern bathroom very clean. Gerald is a charming friendly host. His breakfasts are feasts of freshly prepared home cooked ingredients. He ensures all his guests are provided with a meal that suits their individual tastes. His knowledge of the city, which he imparts with great enthusiasm and style, is vast. This is one B&B which I have no hesitation in recommending.

Room Tip: Book early!

Gerald could do no more for us. The room was lovely, clean, and the en-suite facilities brilliant.
We ate good organic and varied foods for our breakfasts which set us up for the day. Gerald is charming - as well as a very good host.

21b is very near the town centre and train station - everything was easy to walk to. A car was not needed.

Well done! We would definately go again.

WENT AS A STRANGER - LEFT AS A FRIEND !

thank you dear friend ! thank you for saying it !

you are always welcome and welcome to book well ahead

we rarely are able to accept 1 / 2 night bookings : [the Michelin Guide for Edinburgh states that 3nights is an absolute minimum stay] : most guests stay longer to enjoy the unbelieveable comfort and convenience of geraldsplace.com

most especially friends returning again and again

warm wishes Gerald

Gerald's Place was our first stop in Scotland - and Gerald was defintely our nicest host on our trip. The rooms are in the souterain, but very comfortable and aesthetically furnished. The location of Gerald's Place is the best you can choose if you want to live near the modern heart of Edinburgh with all places in footwalk distances. It's not worth to talk about the degree of cleanliness: just perfect! And if you want to know what a warmhearted welcome can be: enjoy your first sip of Whisky after arriving , your first cup of coffee or tea with fresh milk in your room in the morning - but first of all enjoy the tasteful breakfast in combination with the conversation with Gerald.
Thank you, Gerald, and if we visit Scotland again we doubtless would like to stay at Gerald's Place.

My mother and I were delighted with the warm reception and hospitality offered by Gerald. Our room was cosy and had all the amenities required. The small fridge with organic milk for our tea was much appreciated. Gerald is a very good cook and breakfasts were delicious. We felt at home and were able to come and go at our leisure. We loved being in walking distance of all that Edinburgh has to offer. If you are a park or flower or botanical enthusiast then be sure not to miss the glass houses at the Botanical Gardens. A jewel for Edinburgh! If we ever return to this lovely and historical city we will not hesitate to stay at Gerald's Place. Gerald has taken the time to suss out local eateries and code them as to price, food type, location, and ambiance. We found this to be very helpful. Gerald will email you with thoughtful lists of what to see when in Edinburgh and this practice certainly added to our enjoyment. Take care Gerald and hope to see you again. Regards from Canada.

Room Tip: Gerald adds a dram of Scottish Whiskey to your in room supplies!

WARM HOSPITALITY thank you Sue - it was a delight to welcome you and your octagenarian mother, Nora, to my b&b home : you had come an amazingly long way [as so many of my guests do], so the least I should do, would be to offer "warm hospitality" : glad you enjoyed the warming smal decanter [20cl] of Orkney Single Malt Whisky 21 years old - no wonder it's praised as an exceptionally smooth malt 46% vol - it's the very very best quality - an exclusive EXHIBITION malt, from The Wine Society [UK's largest wine merchant and for members only]. Thank you for all the keenly observed, and complimentary comments, about Edinburgh and geraldsplace : please come again soon, and once again book well ahead - regards Gerald

My first time in Edinburgh and with the welcome we recieved in Gerald's Place it will not be the last.
I could not recommend this little gem enough. My friend and I were in the city for the marathon so we wanted a comfortable and quiet place to rest and prepare. From the moment we arrived we were treated like long lost friends who hadn't seen eachother in years, nothing was too much for Gerald who was a fantastic host.
Breakfast was 1st class with a large variety on offer from home-made cereals to cooked breakfasts to home-made bread. The room was very comfortable, modern and spacious and a brilliant shower to refresh after a day exploring the city or running a marathon.
A five minute walk to the very popular Princess Street where all tours and buses depart from.
It's easy to write a review but this is an experience that no review can do justice, if Edinburgh is a city you would like to visit then complete the whole experience with a stay in Gerald's Place, it's very rare to find such a place and I feel blessed that I have been lucky enough to stay here and meet the man that is Mr.Gerald Della-Porta.

THE WARMEST OF WELCOMES David - so manny many thanks for your review - it really made my day! Congratulations on completing the marathon, and running through the pain of cramp, 'out of puff', and the several other agonies that travel with you on the 26 mile journey : and special thanks for being great guests - hope to see you next year - when you run again to beat that 4 hour target - Gerald
